NFL 2022-23: How About A Lions vs. Jaguars Super Bowl?

Are the books offering better odds on heads now to even out the bets?

That would be pretty funny if they did.

BTW, a quick google search- if anyone IS interested in betting on that- be careful on who you bet with. While the odds are equal, the payout isn't. Some are taking more than others. I saw one that had actual 0% cost odds, but others were taking 4-5%. So do your homework.

Why would anyone, ever, gamble?

Is it just a tax on people bad at math?

because fun. At least I presume that. And I understand there are endorphins when you win- which are addictive.

Otherwise, given the wealth in Vegas, yea.... they didn't build the strip because gamblers win.

Purdy out a year with Tommy John.

Jimmy G not coming back per Shanahan.

French will be ecstatic that they’re fully handing the keys to Lance next year.

Can we fast-track him into the booth for the Super Bowl? Anything is better than Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olson. How shallow was Fox's roster that that was their #1 team after Buck/Aikman left?

KB is great.

And I think I speak for 99.999% of humanity when I say I hope I never see Tom Brady again, unless it's in the Police Blotter.

Funny thing about gambling that I just learned regarding one of my brothers - he and his wife almost always have to pay in $30-40k in taxes on gambling winnings from Mystic Lake Casino. It turns out that while my SIL worked for the casino for 7 years or so, she was paying attention to the tendencies of the various slot machines. While she worked there, she couldn’t gamble. Now that she’s moved on to other employment, she goes to the casino two or three times each month and takes in the cash.

I had no idea until just earlier this week.

Whenever he speaks, I immediately think of the scenes from Bedazzled when Brandon Fraser wishes to be the basketball star, but also becomes dumb as a post. Listening to Brady in the booth would be pure torture.

If they are paying that much in income taxes on her gambling winnings, that means she is making bank on those gambling earnings. Six figures minimum based on a typical tax bracket.

"She was able to make huge sums of money because she noticed non-random behavior in the slot machines only by working there for several years" doesn't exactly increase my confidence in the legitimacy of the world of gambling.

I’ve had the same thoughts over the past few days. At this point, I don’t much care because the extent of my gambling is tossing in $20 to the lottery when the jackpots get huge - renting a dream for a day or two.

I don't play slots, but I think I understand what is going on.

Experienced slot players understand that by looking at the progressive numbers that are usually blinking at the tops of the machines, you can see which machine has paid out the jackpots most recently, and which machines currently have higher jackpots. It is also readily known by regular slot players (not me) which machines have more favorable betting odds because of the number of "lines" you can bet.

However, I don't believe you can make a living off of your slot winnings. You might get a jackpot of $30,000, and thus you'll get a Form 1099 from the casino for your winnings (which you'll have to pay taxes on) but slots, even if optimally played, still have a considerable house advantage.

If you read the professional slots threads or sites that are out there, you will see that professional players essentially earn their "living" playing slots by living off of the comps given by the casinos due to their volume of play. Free rooms, food, transportation, etc...

One thing that sports betting can do is turn the unwatchable into the watchable.

For instance, last week I placed just one bet on the conference championship games. I bet an alternative line in the Philly-SF game. I bet that Philly would win the game by at least 9.5 points, as opposed to the slim margin by which Philly was favored.

Thus, by early in the third quarter, when the game became unwatchable for most football fans, I still had a keen interest in the play.

If you want to see what it's like, I suggest you find a sportsbook before the Super Bowl and put a handful of $5 prop bets down. For instance, you can bet whether the first touchdown is scored by a player wearing the number 13 or lower, or a number 14 or higher. Good times.
