Marion barber died of heatstroke.

I knew him back in college. He was a good dude.

His parents chose to not donate his brain to CTE research. I’m sad, but I get where they are coming from.

No clue if we have a track thread, but since this also involves an NFL player I’ll throw it here.

Devon Allen of the Eagles was in the finals of the 110m hurdles. He was disqualified for leaving the blocks early. Not before the gun, but at .099 seconds after it. In track, to assume you aren’t anticipating the gun, you can’t “react” quicker than .1 seconds after the gun. That rule is in place despite World Athletics doing their own study that found people can react in .085, but they kept the .1 rule.

There were two similar DQs in the Womens 100m semifinals as well.

It was really lame.

Yeah if someone wants to guess the gun and risk getting DQed if they go before it, let them.

Exactly. We have a punishment in place already for this. Single jump DQ is a pretty severe punishment, unlike in short track speed skating where the field gets a warning then the next person who jumps is DQed.

Why not just run against the clock like downhill skiing?

According to the International Ski Federation (FIS) rules for ski competition, the beeps are a countdown to the start signal, but as long as the athlete starts within five seconds before or after that time, the start is considered valid.

Impossible to "jump early" because you break beam to start timing and break beam to end it.

If you choose to run with/against a "rabbit" of your choosing, allowed.

Unless I'm being dumb that's the difference between doing a solo run and running against others. Right? Or am I misunderstanding you?

They'd run solo (against the clock) with the option to run with a human "pacer" or "rabbit" beside them.

Yes, it'd change the nature of the competition in the sprints.

Yuck. That seems like throwing away the race in order to rationalize the records. Gross.
