NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

#12 - Miami Dolphins
Points: 151.2236
Super Bowl Championships:
2 (VII, VIII)
NFL Championships: 2 (1972, 1973)
Playoff Appearances: 23 (20-21 (0.488))

The Miami Dolphins come in at #12 on this list. The Dolphins joined the American Football League to start the 1966 season, but struggled in their 4 pre-merger seasons, failing to record a winning record. However, the hiring of Don Shula as head coach changed the franchise's fortunes. The Dolphins made their first postseason appearance in Shula's first season, and quickly ascended to the top of the NFL. The 1971 campaign saw Miami advance to Super Bowl VI, falling to Dallas 24-3. That would be the last loss for the Dolphins for over a year. Miami went undefeated in 1972, winning Super Bowl VII over the Washington Redskins 14-7, becoming the first, and, to date, only team to go undefeated for an entire season in the Super Bowl era. The Dolphins would follow up with another Super Bowl winning campaign, going 12-2 and winning Super Bowl VIII over the Minnesota Vikings 24-7. Shula would lead Miami to 2 more Super Bowl appearances in his tenure, falling to Washington in Super Bowl XVII and dropping Super Bowl XIX to the San Francisco 49ers. Shula would lead the Dolphins from 1970-1995, winning 2 Super Bowls and 11 division titles, making the playoffs 16 times, and appearing in 7 AFC Championship games. Following Shula's retirement, the Dolphins had moderate success, making 5 straight playoff trips from 1997-2001, but were unable to advance past the Divisional Round. Since 2001, the Dolphins have largely struggled, making only 2 playoff trips, losing both times in the Wild Card round. However, Miami did put together a 10-6 campaign in 2016, the franchise's best record since 2008. If Miami can get back to the success they had under Don Shula, perhaps make another Super Bowl and win another title, they will likely move up in these rankings.

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

#11 - Indianapolis Colts
Points: 175.1663
Super Bowl Championships:
2 (V, XLI)
NFL Championships: 5 (1958, 1959, 1968*, 1970, 2006)
Playoff Appearances: 27 (22-23 (0.489))

The Indianapolis Colts come in just outside the Top 10, at #11 on this list. The Colts franchise began in Baltimore in 1953, and quickly became a dominant force in the NFL, winning back-to-back NFL titles in 1958 and 1959. Baltimore struggled immediately after their 1959 title, but rebounded in 1964 to make another trip to the NFL Championship Game. The Colts continued their success, barely missing out on the NFL title in 1965. In 1967, the Colts nearly went undefeated, going 11-1-2, but lost the division tiebreaker to the Rams and failed to make the NFL playoffs. Baltimore would come back in 1968 and dominate the NFL, going 13-1 and winning the NFL Championship. Unfortunately for the Colts, they fell to the New York Jets in one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history. Baltimore would redeem itself in 1970, winning Super Bowl V over the Dallas Cowboys in a mistake-filled game. The Colts would largely struggle after its World Championship, advancing to the playoffs only 3 times before shocking many and moving the franchise to Indianapolis in 1984. Once in Indy, the Colts continued their struggles, making only 1 playoff appearance from 1984-1994. However, Indianapolis would reverse its fortunes in the mid-1990s, advancing to the AFC Championship Game in 1995. The Colts would sustain their success for much of the next 20 seasons. From 1995-2014, the Colts won 10 division titles, advanced to the playoffs 16 times, appeared in 5 AFC Championship Games and 2 Super Bowls, and won Super Bowl XLI following the 2006 season. The Colts have been mediocre the past 2 seasons, going 8-8 in each campaign. However, with Andrew Luck at the helm, Indy will look to get back to their winning ways in 2017. If they do, and win some more hardware and perhaps another Super Bowl, they will likely move back up into the Top 10.

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

You don't count the Playoff Bowl for the divisional runners up as a playoff game??

The latest brain study examined 111 former NFL players. Only one didn’t have CTE.

A legal tackle shall be when a player is wrapped up in the tackling player's arms and brought to the ground, or a player touches the out of bounds line, or when an offensive player "gives himself up" by intentionally going to ground.

You eliminate the collision when the defensive player running at high speed crashes into the ball carrier.

#10 - Denver Broncos
Points: 176.9775
Super Bowl Championships:
3 (XXXII, XXXIII, 50)
NFL Championships: 3 (1997, 1998, 2015)
Playoff Appearances: 22 (23-19 (0.548))

The Denver Broncos start our countdown of the Top 10 teams on this list. The Broncos joined the American Football League in 1960, but failed to have any success until the mid-1970s, posting 0 winning seasons in their first 13 years in professional football. Denver made its first trip to the postseason in 1977, and advanced to the Super Bowl before falling to Dallas in Super Bowl XII. The Broncos would make two more trips to the playoffs in the 1970s, but were unable to replicate their 1977 success. Denver also struggled in the early 1980s, but their fortunes changed dramatically after acquiring John Elway in a trade with the Baltimore Colts. Since Elway's arrival in the Mile High City in 1983, the Broncos have more Super Bowl appearances (7) than losing seasons (5). The Broncos made 5 trips to the playoffs in the 1980s, winning 4 division titles, and advancing to 3 Super Bowls. Unfortunately for Denver, the Broncos lost each trip by massive margins. Denver was a middle-of-the-pack franchise in the early-mid 1990s, making 2 trips to the playoffs, and a trip to the AFC Championship game in the 1991 season. Denver dominated the 1996 season, going 13-3, but were upset by the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars. The Broncos responded with two of the franchise's best seasons in 1997 and 1998, both of which ended with Denver hoisting the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl Champions, knocking off Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXII and Atlanta in Super Bowl XXXIII. Denver was a solid, but not spectacular franchise in the early part of the 21st Century. From 1999-2011, Denver made 5 trips to the postseason, won 2 division titles, and made 1 trip to the AFC Championship game in 2005. However, Denver struck gold again in 2012, wooing Payton Manning to join the squad. The Broncos immediately shifted to contenders, and from 2012-2015 won 4 consecutive division titles, made 2 more trips to the Super Bowl, and knocked off the 15-1 Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Following Manning's retirement after the 2015 campaign, Denver had a dominating defense, but mediocre QB play led to a 9-7 season. If they can return to the playoffs, win some hardware, and perhaps lift another Lombardi Trophy, they will likely move up in these rankings. Until then, they sit on the edge of the Top 10.

Whoops. :p:D:D Nice catch. I'll update the summary appropriately.

I figured as much...about the Giants. Your college fandom sorta speaks volumes about the rest. :p:D:D

#9 - Chicago Bears
Points: 179.4963
Super Bowl Championships:
1 (XX)
NFL Championships: 9 (1921*, 1932*, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946, 1963, 1985)
Playoff Appearances: 25 (17-18 (0.486))

The Chicago Bears come in at #9 on this list. The Bears franchise began in 1919 as the Decatur Staleys, and had almost immediate success. The Staleys were named the American Professional Football Association (the league would change its name to the NFL in 1922) in 1921. After changing their name to the Chicago Bears, the franchise continued to have success, posting winning records in 24 of their first 25 seasons. The Bears won the first ever "playoff" game in 1932 en route to being named NFL Champions for a second time. The Monsters of the Midway would claim NFL titles in 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, and 1946, including an astounding 73-0 victory over the Washington Redskins in the 1940 NFL Championship Game. However, the Bears best season in this stretch was in 1934 when they were a perfect 13-0 in the regular season, but fell to the Giants 30-13 in the title game. While the Bears would put together several strong seasons following their 1946 title, they often finished 2nd, missing out on playing in the NFL Championship Game. The Bears would win another NFL title in 1963, which would be the franchise's last playoff game for nearly 15 years. From 1964-1976, Chicago failed to post a winning record. The Bears made 2 trips to the playoffs in 1977 and 1979, but were unable to win a game. Finally, in the mid-1980s, da Bears returned to dominance. Between 1984-1991, Chicago won 6 division titles, played in 3 NFC Championship Games, and posted arguably the greatest defense in the history of the game in 1985 when they won Super Bowl XX over the New England Patriots. The Bears made only 2 playoff appearances between 1992-2004; however, they won back-to-back division titles in 2005-2006, and returned to the Super Bowl in 2006, losing to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Chicago's most recent playoff appearance was in 2010, when they advanced to the Conference Championship, but fell to arch-rival Green Bay. While the Bears have struggled the past few seasons, they will look to Bear Down and get back to their franchise's winning ways to move back up this list.

#8 - Oakland Raiders
Points: 184.5871
Super Bowl Championships:
3 (XI, XV, XVIII)
NFL Championships: 3* (1976, 1980, 1983)
Playoff Appearances: 22 (25-19 (0.568))

The Oakland Raiders come in at #8 on this list. Oakland joined the American Football League in 1960, and, while originally named the Oakland Señors, the franchise changed its name to the Raiders before the 1960 season. The Raiders struggled in their first three seasons, largely due to having to select the leftovers in the first AFL draft. However, Oakland would surge to prominence in the AFL, winning the AFL Championship in 1967, but falling to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. Oakland would play for the AFL title in 1968 and 1969, and continued their success following the AFL-NFL merger. The Raiders advanced to the AFC Championship Game in 1970, and made 5 straight AFC Championship Game appearances between 1973-1977. The 1976 season was special for Oakland, as the Raiders dominated the NFL, going 13-1 and winning their first Super Bowl over Minnesota in Super Bowl XI. Oakland would make only 1 playoff trip between 1978-1981, but made it worth their while, as they were the first Wild Card team to advance to the Super Bowl, and knocked off Philadelphia in Super Bowl XV. After a contentious battle with the NFL, the Raiders moved to Los Angeles following the 1981 season. The L.A. Raiders went to the playoffs in each of their first 4 seasons in the new city, including a return to the Super Bowl following the 1983 season. The Raiders knocked off defending champion Washington in Super Bowl XVIII for the franchise's third Super Bowl title. The Silver and Black would continue to field a competitive team throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, including 1991 squad that advanced to the 1991 AFC Championship Game. The Raiders moved back to Oakland after the 1994 season, but have largely failed to replicate their previous success in Oaktown. The Raiders did see a brief outburst of success between 2000-2002, including the franchise's fifth Super Bowl appearance following the 2002 season. However, Oakland would not make the playoffs again until 2016. While the Raiders look like a legitimate threat in the AFC for the next few seasons, the franchise announced that it will move to Las Vegas in either 2019 or 2020, and it remains to be seen how the fans will support the team at home in the next 2-3 seasons. If the Raiders can win some more hardware and perhaps another Lombardi Trophy, they will likely move up these rankings.

The smartest player in the NFL retires abruptly after the release of the CTE report

https//sports.yahoo.com/nfl-ravens-urschel-retires-brain-study-released-200841438--nfl.html

I have done research in a number of areas, including spectral graph theory, numerical PDE's, matrix algebra, computational finance, mathematical physics, and others.

My result (with L. Zikatanov) regarding the connectedness of nodal decompositions of Fiedler vectors has received a fair amount of attention; it can be read here. The AMS Notices wrote a profile of me that discusses this result. It is kindly referred to as the Urschel-Zikatanov Theorem.

In addition, I currently have the fastest eigensolver for minimal Laplacian eigenvectors.

#7 - Washington Redskins
Points: 189.2103
Super Bowl Championships:
3 (XVII, XXII, XXVI)
NFL Championships: 5 (1937, 1942, 1982, 1987, 1991)
Playoff Appearances: 24 (23-19 (0.548))

The Washington Redskins come in at #7 on this list. The franchise joined the NFL in 1932 as the Boston Braves, but changed its name to the Boston Redskins for the 1933 season. The Redskins would play in the NFL Championship Game in 1936, falling to Green Bay. The franchise moved to Washington D.C. in 1937 and quickly continued their success, advancing to, and winning the NFL Championship in 1937 over Chicago. The War Years were particularly successful for the Burgundy and Gold, as they won 4 division titles from 1940-1945 and won the 1942 NFL Championship (again over Chicago). The Redskins struggled after World War II, failing to make the playoffs for 25 seasons from 1946-1970. Washington would finally get back in the postseason in 1971, and in 1972, the Redskins advanced to Super Bowl VII, falling to the undefeated Miami Dolphins by a touchdown. The Skins would make the playoffs in 3 of the next 4 seasons, but were unable to get back to the Super Bowl. Despite fielding competitive teams from 1977-1981, Washington failed to get back to the postseason; however, that would change beginning in 1982. From 1982-1991, the Redskins were a dominant team in the league, winning 5 division titles, playing in 5 NFC Championship Games, and advancing to 4 Super Bowls. Led by the Hogs, the Redskins won Super Bowl XVII over the Miami Dolphins following the strike-shortened 1982 season, won Super Bowl XXII over the Denver Broncos following the strike-shortened 1987 season, and won Super Bowl XXVI over the Buffalo Bills following the 1991 season. Since 1991, Washington has won 3 division titles and made 6 postseason trips, but has been unable to advance past the Divisional Round. The Redskins barely missed out on the playoffs in 2016, and will look to improve next season to get back into the postseason. If they do so, win some hardware along the way, and perhaps capture a fourth Lombardi Trophy, they would likely move up this list.
