NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

FS23 should be in ticket sales :)

every team so far is a couple playoffs or good season or a SB win away from moving on up the list :D

Well, it is true. I believe every team (save for who is ranked #1) is potentially a Super Bowl win away from moving up at least 1 spot on the list. :)

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

Good thing I'm getting tired of the NFL. Won't be much of a sacrifice at all to finally turn them off for good.

The NFL has given the National Institutes of Health less than half of the $30 million they promised for concussion research five years ago, and after repeatedly trying to influence how their “unrestricted gift” was used, the league is letting their agreement expire with no plans to finish paying up.

#6 - New York Giants
Points: 222.3167
Super Bowl Championships:
4 (XXI, XXV, XLII, XLVI)
NFL Championships: 8 (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956, 1986, 1990, 2007, 2011)
Playoff Appearances: 32 (24-25 (0.490))

The New York Giants come in at #6 on this list. The Giants joined the NFL beginning with the 1925 season and had almost immediate success. After back-to-back 8-win seasons, New York was named NFL Champion in 1927 after an 11-1-1 campaign. The Giants would have another strong campaign in 1929, going 13-1-1, but fell just short of Green Bay, who went 12-0-1. From 1933-1946, New York went to 8 NFL Championship Games, but only came away with 2 NFL Titles in 1934 and 1938. The Giants only made 1 playoff appearance between 1947-1955, but resurged in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Giants would win the 1956 NFL title, and play in 5 NFL Championship Games in six seasons between 1958-1963. Indeed, no team has played in more NFL Championship Games than the New York Giants. Following the 1963 season, New York struggled, missing the playoffs 17 consecutive seasons. However, the Giants roared back to life in the 1980s, making 5 playoff appearances, winning 2 division titles, and advancing to and winning the franchise's first Super Bowl in 1986, knocking off the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. The Giants would start the 1990s in grand fashion, winning Super Bowl XXV over the Buffalo Bills in 1990. New York only made 2 more playoff trips in the decade though, never advancing further than the Divisional Round. The G-Men would rebound though in 2000, advancing to their third Super Bowl, but falling to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV. New York would make the occasional postseason trip from 2001-2006, but made a shocking run in 2007, running the table as a Wild Card before knocking off an undefeated New England Patriots squad in Super Bowl XLII. Big Blue would stand in the way of another Patriots Super Bowl in 2011, as the Giants again stunned new England to win Super Bowl XLVI. Since their fourth Super Bowl title, the Giants have been largely mediocre, failing to advance to the playoffs from 2012-2015. New York did advance to the postseason in 2016 for an NFL record 32nd time (tied with Green Bay and Dallas), but fell to the Packers, leaving the Giants as the only team ranked in the Top 10 to have a losing playoff record. The Giants will look to get back to the playoffs next season and could crack the Top 5 with a fifth Super Bowl title.

#5 - San Francisco 49ers
Points: 250.0233
Super Bowl Championships:
5 (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX)
NFL Championships: 5 (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1994)
Playoff Appearances: 26 (30-20 (0.600))

The San Francisco 49ers come in at #5 on this list. The 49ers joined the All-America Football Conference in 1946. Despite four winning seasons in the league, including a 12-2 mark in 1948, the 49ers were unable to claim an AAFC title, coming closest in 1949 when they were runner-up to the Cleveland Browns. San Francisco joined Cleveland and a previous version of the Baltimore Colts in merging with the NFL following the 1949 season. The 49ers had mediocre success upon joining the NFL, posting winning seasons from 1951-1954. San Francisco got their first taste of the NFL postseason in 1957, but fell to the Detroit Lions, who would win the NFL Championship. The 49ers would not get back to the playoffs until after the AFL-NFL merger, making back-to-back NFC Championship Game appearances in 1970 and 1971. San Francisco would struggle for most of the rest of the 1970s, including consecutive 2-14 seasons in 1978-1979; however, the 1980s would see the 49ers ascend to the pinnacle of professional football. From 1981-1998, the Niners would dominate the NFL. In that 18 year stretch, San Francisco posted 17 10+ win seasons (the only season they failed was the strike-shortened 1982 season), made 16 trips to the playoffs, won 13 division titles, advanced to the NFC Championship Game 10 times, and won 5 Super Bowls. San Francisco squeaked past Cincinnati in Super Bowls XVI and XXIII, winning by 5 and 4 points respectively, but dominated in their other trips to the big game. In Super Bowl XIX, the 49ers crushed Dan Marino's Dolphins 38-16. San Francisco replicated the feat against John Elway's Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV, decimating Denver 55-10 in the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history. The 49ers also dominated the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, winning by 23 points. San Francisco struggled in the late 1990s and early 2000s, making only 2 trips to the postseason from 1999-2010, never advancing past the Divisional Round. The Niners would resurge between 2011-2013, winning 2 division titles, advancing to 3 NFC Championship Games, and appearing in their sixth Super Bowl, falling to Baltimore in Super Bowl XLVII by 3 points. The 49ers have been on a downward trajectory since 2013, including a dismal 2-14 record in 2016. San Francisco will need to turn it around if they wish to move up in these rankings.

#4 - New England Patriots
Points: 255.0217
Super Bowl Championships:
5 (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI)
NFL Championships: 5 (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016)
Playoff Appearances: 24 (32-19 (0.627))

The New England Patriots come in at #4 on this list. The Patriots were the final original franchise in the American Football League. Playing as the Boston Patriots, the franchise had modest initial success in the AFL, including falling to the San Diego Chargers in the 1963 AFL Championship. The Patriots would struggle before the AFL-NFL merger, losing 10 games in each of the 3 seasons preceding the merger. After moving to Foxborough, MA in 1970, the franchise tried to switch its name to the Bay Street Patriots, but the NFL rejected the name change, and the franchise would settle on the New England Patriots. Either way, success did not immediately follow. The Patriots would make only 3 postseason trips from 1971-1984, losing each game, and won only 1 division title. In 1985, New England reversed those fortunes, making the playoffs and winning 3 games before falling to the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX. The Patriots would make the playoffs again in 1986, but lost in the Divisional Round. New England would again experience a stretch of futility, failing to make the playoffs from 1987-1993. The Patriots would make 4 playoff appearances from 1994-1998, including a trip to Super Bowl XXXI, losing to Green Bay. The franchise's fortunes would turn however when they hired Bill Belichick, and since 2001, the Patriots have dominated the NFL, winning 10+ games 15 times and 14 division titles, advancing to 11 AFC Championship Games, playing in 7 Super Bowls, and winning 5 Lombardi Trophies. Led by the Greatest Living American, the Patriots shocked the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI to win the franchise's first Super Bowl Title. New England would win back-to-back titles by knocking off the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX respectively. The New York Giants would prevent the Patriots from going undefeated in 2007, winning Super Bowl XLII 17-14, and would again keep New England from a fourth Super Bowl title, knocking off the Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI. However, New England would capture their fourth title following the 2014 season, coming back from a 10 point deficit to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. The Patriots would put that comeback to shame in Super Bowl LI, when they came back from a 25 point deficit to shock the Atlanta Falcons and win their fifth Lombardi Trophy. The Patriots are currently the model NFL Franchise. If they continue their winning ways, they will no doubt continue moving up this list.

#4 - New England Patriots: 255.0217 Points
#5 - San Francisco 49ers: 250.0233 Points

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

Can you run your model over any interval? I'd be interested to know where the Rots ranked prior to Belicich. My guess would be down around 17-20.

Truly they have had an amazing run.

Now, f-ck them for eternity.

I could, but it would take a lot of work. I think you are pretty close to the ranking though. If we were to look at the rankings after the 1999 season, they would certainly be ahead of Houston (non-existent at the time), Jacksonville, Carolina, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, Arizona, New Orleans, New York Jets, Baltimore, and Seattle. My guess is they would be in the mix with Detroit and Tennessee, and probably just ahead of the Chargers. That would put them somewhere in the 18-20 range.

For those following my rankings, I will post the Top 3 at the same time, tomorrow afternoon sometime.

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

yeah, ok...drugs and punching women, ok...CK, never works again...that makes sense.

The NFL needs the South. Without the South, the NFL takes a huge revenue hit. As a general rule, can you show nuance in support of this nation while operating in the South? No, not so much. The various team owners interested in him have to explain his actions to their fans.

I think its just plain pathetic that people care more about a guy kneeling than all the drugs and violent acts towards other people committed by players.

People are stupid.

You've been on this ball awhile. This should not be news.

Re: NFL 2016-17 II: Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Offseason

The NFL needs the South.

The NFL could probably get along quite well as a league of just the Midwest and the South. In the Northeast it's just a minor irritation and in the West it's gorgeous out so people go outside and do things.

The Improved NFL:

East
Buffalo
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia

North
Minnesota
Green Bay
Chicago
Detroit

South
Cincinnati
Washington
Atlanta
Miami

West
Dallas
New Orleans
St. Louis
Indianapolis
