NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Moss had his good and bad moments, but the guy did a ton of non-publicized charity work. He didn't want to have that work look like photo-ops, etc, from what I've heard.

Moss is still regarded with some fondness in New England from what I've heard, and Bob Kraft has spoken well of him.

First, if the NFL and Vikings "convict" Peterson for these acts by punishing him, is anyone worried about the possible impact on the criminal case, and the fairness of any trial he might receive?

Second, what if Peterson is acquitted? Wouldn't be the first time that has happened to someone charged with a crime. Does he get the lost games back (we know he doesn't get his reputation back)?

Nope. Joe Schmoe often loses his job once he is arrested or even simply portrayed publicly in a negative light. NFL players should be treated no differently except as required by their CBA.

For the MN people, the traffic cop that Moss hit back in the day, it turns out that one of my coworkers witnessed it and the traffic cop involved is one of the three main traffic cops that now handles the parking ramp for the IDS Tower, which is just outside the window right behind me. Seriously, now that I know who the traffic cop was, it makes perfect sense to me how he could have been confused and had those troubles. She yells so loud that I hear her on the 4th floor, and listening to the woman get so excited, it scares me to think that the city has armed that woman with a pistol.

As of the time of this posting, a poll on the homepage of the Pioneer Press:

What should the Vikings do with Adrian Peterson?
Total Votes = 6,526
Cut him = 1,087 Votes, or 16.65%
Suspend him indefinitely = 772 Votes, or 11.82%
Keep him deactivated until case is resolved = 1,652 Votes, or 25.31%
Bring him back until case is resolved = 2,639 Votes, or 40.43%
Bring him back, because off-field issues shouldn't matter = 376 Votes, or 5.761%

Vikings are the leaders in arrests in NFL since 2000 I believe. Good to be #1 at something!

So approximately 53% don't think he should be playing at the very least in the short term up through never again.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

I mentioned just a little bit ago on GPL, but I will say it here too.

I think the Vikes should have said they were suspending him for another 3 games, in addition to the 1 he was already held out of. (maximum of 4 allowed by CBA) And then in the next 3 weeks, work the NFL to figure out if they wanted to tack on another 2, under the new domestic violence rules. When that suspension is done, decide if they want to reinstate him, or cut him. There is no reason to cut him now, figure out what the NFL is going to do first, and take a stand by giving him the maximum 4 games that they were allowed by the CBA. As it is, they completely ****ed it up.

I have no doubt some employers do this, but it's usually only ones with questionable legal counsel, or done with extreme care.

First, they better do it to everyone equally, or they run the risk of an illegal discrimination claim.

Second, and this probably won't apply to Peterson but I don't know, they probably face unemployment compensation liability. Many states require the disqualifying employee misconduct to be job related.

Third, they had better not stand up and "publish" to the outside world they are terminating this person for theft, or prostitution, or child abuse, or whatever, if there hasn't already been a conviction or plea of guilty. As soon as the criminal case goes south, the libel/slander case gets started.

Anheuser-Busch issues a statement to the NFL, saying they are not happy with the way the NFL has handled these incidents, and have let the league know their feelings.

They have a $1.2 billion sponsorship contract with the NFL.

"We are disappointed and increasingly concerned by the recent incidents that have overshadowed this NFL season. We are not yet satisfied with the league's handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code. We have shared our concerns and expectations with the league."
And yet, they haven't done anything concrete.

I wonder if this is them getting out front of this. No plans to get out of the nfl but just saying it to "look good"

Although, this still probably has some NFL execs bud lighting their pants.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Don't see it mentioned. Radisson hotels suspended their sponsorship of the Vikings.

Also the MN governor calls for Peterson to be suspended.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Tweeter machine reporting that Nike has pulled all their Peterson displays from MN area stores.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

You know what the real nightmare would be?

Imagine the AP scenario happening in Week 17 with the Vikings at 8-7 and on the bubble for the playoffs.

KFAN would be a smoldering crater in the ground by Tuesday of game week.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Just got an alert on my phone that the Vikings have reversed course, and AP is now suspended from all team activities until the case is resolved.
