NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

Than why have a season at all? :P The risk is always there, why not have few teams in the playoffs to protect the players...I think the NFL owners point is if they want to keep getting 59% of the revenue, the players need to have more "meaningful" games.

The idea is the players want to be compensated for the extra risk, not that they don't want any risk at all. The owners can't expect the players to extend the regular season by 13% and not have the players demand more compensation.

The players have a pretty sweet deal right now. From what I've read, the owners want to decrease that piece of the pie, while increasing the games.

The obvious compromise is one or the other, but either way, the players will be made to look greedy, given the deal they have currently.

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

I'm just pointing out that the risk is indeed greater, given the increased number of games. That's all.

There's 16 chances (games) for a guy to get hurt right now. That could increase to 18 chances (games) for a guy to get hurt if they follow this plan.

Say, I'll punch you in the face 16 times, and give you a dollar each time. You may get hurt, you may not.

How about I punch you 18 times, and I'll give you a dollar (or I may only give you 75 cents, depending on the new agreement we have)? You may get hurt, you may not.

Which would you choose? ;)

must spread rep...

I would think the NFLPA would settle for a small increase (or none) in salary cap as percentage of NFL income if the Owners put more guarantees into NFL contracts...although that is something I absolutely hate about MLB and NBA contracts.

Yeah, I think the guaranteed money isn't gonna happen. I could see contracts becoming more binding (meaning less holdouts without severe penalties, compensation for getting cut written into the contracts, etc).

Also, with the extended season, I'd really love for them to move the trade deadline to a later week, instead of week 6. NO other league has their deadline before the season is half done. It's ridiculous. That would help those teams that have to decide to make a run or fold it up.

I'd like to see the deadline at week 10/16 or week 12/18.

Re: NFL 2010 - Cap & Trade

As the great philosopher, Lauper, once said..."money changes everything".

To follow the money, is the 18 game season swapping two preseason games for two reg season games? That is one proposal.

If yes, then the gain is the revenue gap between those games. With season tickets being a sizable percent of ticket sales and parking, beer and jerseys not being free in pre-season, the gap will largely be incremental TV revenue from increased advertising and network money.

The loss is the injury rate for first team players between two preseason games and two regular season games. Depending on how teams adjust, that could mean having starters on the field, in regular season action, for anywhere from 4 to 6 additional quarters. The intensity difference between pre and regular season impacts the other 2-4 quarters.

There would be more total injuries to the players making the majority of the money if starters are on the field for more real game action. I would also think there is some exponential aspect to injuries as the length of the season increases. If those injuries were to key players (Brady, Manning, Brees etc.) then it could hurt the franchise substantially.

For the players, even if they are paid additional money for the two games, it would be under current contract terms. Collectively, they will play fewer seasons if the length of a season increases. Since a large part of their increase in salary comes from renegotiating, they will lose some percentage of the opportunity to renegotiate if more careers end early. Now, somebody else will take their place but that person is likely to earn less, not more, than a starter.

Let's take a wild guess and say that owners don't lose money since they are the ones proposing this plan...seems any individual player would not stand to gain. Should be an interesting debate. If I were a player I'd want a higher percentage of the per game revenue for those additional two games to represent the collective lost opportunity to negotiate an additional contract (adjusted for the likelihood of that happening).

Its nice to see that after all that the city of Detroit has been through, they've decided not to subject to further anguish by airing Lions games within the city.

Stuck with Houston @ Deadskins instead of Pats vs Propellers.

Thank Heaven for the Red Zone Channel and channelsurfing.net

I called DTV today. I decided against the redzone channel and took $20/month + free HD...essentially $30/month for the next year. Nice little $360 savings :)

Till Fergie shows up in something inappropriate (which I fully support). Then it's back to choir's for 10 years.

My money is that they have to at least approve her outfit that night. Maybe the guy that doesn't do anything in the band will do something.
