New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Cornell Big Red
Alderson's off-season strategy appears to be abstinence seasoned with patience. I suspect the WFAN callers hate it. Personally, I love it.

Santana is going to be out until June. Why pretend like we have a chance this season? Make the team competitive and roll the savings into the draft. Yeah that's right, I said it. STOP SPENDING MONEY on half baked free agents and spend it in the draft. Over-slot be ****ed!

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

Why pretend like we have a chance this season?

Seriously, put that motto right up in lights on CitiField. I will still watch to see Wright hit homers and Dickey make great faces and Davis develop and Mejia maybe do something eye-popping. And every time we dump salary or substitute a worthless Castillo PA with a useful-experiment-even-if-negative Emaus PA, I will cheer.

Re: New York Mets 2011: The Fierce Urgency of Later

If the Mets simply cut Castillo right now I would be delirious with happiness.

There is really no reason to cut him until spring. I'm sure Sandy is trying to find a GM even dumber than Omar to take him. If we can shave $1 off the contract or pick up a used ball bag for him, it's a net win.

But once the first spring practice is held, yes, DFA him and Ollie. "When making decisions about the future, one should not factor in the sunk costs." Business 101.

Sadly, Ollie might be a good candidate to be LOOGY. I say we throw him out there all the time and if he gets hurt, added bonus of hiding him on the DL and getting that roster spot back.

Just turn him over to the Mets trainers.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Reyes this year. The guy from the Daily News has been hinting that he thinks he'll be traded mid-season.

I admit it, I laughed out loud.

I think that if Reyes plays well if the first half, the Mets have to re-sign him. The fanbase will mutiny if they trade him if he's played well. If he plays badly then the Mets will let him walk and hope he's still a type A.

If Minaya was still in charge there would be option 3, trade him for cents on the dollar.

Flores is still 3 years away and of course it's impossible to predict that far out, even with a blue chippah.

I hope they resign him. I have a completely irrational attachment to homegrown talent, and if I were rational I would not be a Mets fan. I would part with him if somebody was willing to severely overpay, but I don't think Reyes has that kind of sparkle outside of Flushing.

The times that try Mets' souls get a little more trying.

We were never going to contend in '11 and were unlikely to in '12, so this only matters on the back end. Some combination of injury, career cliff dive and/or weirdness we can't foresee will erode that staff by '13 and beyond, right on schedule for the Mets TNG to kick into gear. In the meantime, let's watch the kids and enjoy the occasion joyful surprise of a win over, say, the Natinals.

I've given up on baseball.

It's just not fun anymore.

Flores is never playing short-stop. He's playing third or left field, maybe first base.

BA has him at LF in 2014.

Catcher Josh Thole
First Base Ike Davis
Second Base Reese Havens
Third Base David Wright
Shortstop Jose Reyes

No. 2 Starter Jenrry Mejia
No. 3 Starter Matt Harvey
No. 4 Starter Mike Pelfrey

Talked with the family over xmas, pretty much a done deal that I am going to see the Mets @ Braves series in September. Should be fun, despite the Mets already being 35 games out by then.

My wife and I are going to try to make every Mets game in DC in 2011. It's a sort of suicide pact. Then again, the Nats are our pennant race.

It's nice to have family spread out over the country (Atl, SF). Let's me go see more games and a lot more NL games then I would ever have a chance to see normally.

My NL list is pretty slim so far (PIT, SF, ATL, NYM, MIL). There may be others I saw play interleague, but I can't remember them.

I've only seen MLB games at Shea, Yankee Stadium (late 70's version), Fenway, RFK, Nationals Park, Safeco and Fulton County Stadium. I've never even been to Camden Yards and I've lived in Maryland for 7 years.
