New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Season

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

I contacted UNO's Chancellor as well as Trev Alberts and received the following reply to my email on the ticket party topic directly from Trev, himself:

Dear *****

Thank you for your email and concern. I am sorry that you are so upset and that we are the culprit, it certainly wasn’t our intention. Thank you as well for supporting our program and students in Mankato-should be a great series.

I agree with you, we should have communicated better (included rationale in letter) regarding our challenges with the availability of Baxter Arena. It is true that the 9th was/is the only date that the arena is available for our annual event. We thought about combining the event with other previously scheduled activities but decided that our season ticket holders were entitled to a “stand alone” event. We will be showing the game feed on the video boards for those unable to make the trip to Minnesota (we now have 6,000 season ticket holders). Please let me know when it is convenient for you post October 9th and I will personally deliver your commemorative ticket package.

Regards,

Trev

This at least is an explanation, although, I still don't like it. Plus, if the game is at 7:00 P.M. that night and the ticket party at the new arena is from 5-8 P.M., are they booting everyone out at 8? This is certainly a contradiction.

And, if you don't get your tickets at this function you have to physically go down to the UNO ticket office to pick them. The letter (from the link in the post above) says they aren't mailing them out this year (a first as far as I know).

Red Cows, seems that DU and UNO are the only Top 10 teams without a 1st place vote. Can't accuse our media for being homers.

I was pretty sure that UNO would open the season ranked somewhere from 6 to 10. If Massa had returned (remember, they burned his redshirt for 3 lousy games in the middle of the season 3 years ago), they would have deserved a top 5 ranking in my book. I'm O.K. with seemingly being somewhat undervalued (I think we are, anyway, and I think Coach Blais will sell that notion to his players yet again this season) since it is a motivating factor for the team and the coaching staff.

There are 4 teams in the hunt for the league title, IMHO, and UNO is one of them.

The prognosticators all agree on the NCHC Top Four--just a different order.

Why did they play Massa those 3 games? Was everyone else injured?

Why did they play Massa those 3 games? Was everyone else injured?

Here were the general circumstances (and, my bad, this was 2 years ago, not 3):

http://www.omaha.com/uno/goalie-mas...cle_2a8e4301-0996-5bb9-ae01-f7f7ba37019a.html

They burned his redshirt in a March 1st, 2013 start against Wisconsin, although I think his participation in a 2-23-13 exhibition against the U.S under 18 team was technically when this happened. He also played against UMD on both March 8th & 9th. He logged a grand total of 132:55 of playing time in the 3 regular season games in which he played.

Why did they do this?

I'll let Husker Mike provide you with the prevailing theory:

http://huskermike.blogspot.com/2013/02/uno-rips-off-massas-redshirt-for-late.html

I bet this is among the biggest regrets Coach Blais has had about anything since he got here, although, I would guess he had no idea that Massa would ultimately turn into arguably the greatest goalie in school history.

The link to Mavpuck's Facebook page:

......which is littered with pictures from today's "Flush-Off" at Baxter Arena, too many to post links of---just scroll down the page:

......wherein students, faculty and volunteers tested the (ahem) plumbing in the building. Video:

The arena is to be essentially complete by the end of the day this Friday, so says Coach Blais in a quote from today's St. Cloud Times:

Trinity Western 1-2-16-- 317 seats remain
Denver 1-8-16-- 273 seats remain
Denver 1-9-16-- 238 seats remain
Miami 1-22-16-- 305 seats remain
Miami 1-23-16-- 203 seats remain
Western Michigan 2-12-16-- 264 seats remain
Western Michigan 2-13-16-- 357 seats remain

FYI & FWIW, the school physically counted the seats at Baxter Arena and the official capacity was bumped up a fair bit. The building, as built, actually seats 7,898:

I'll go to my grave saying this was too small (should have been at least 9,000, as Coach Blais has said in the past few months as well).

Still nothing from the school as yet as to the particulars of SRO tickets. Availability, cost, and a specific number. The figure 300 has been thrown around since it was divulged there would be SRO. My guess is that the Fire Marshall's office is going to be the final arbiter of that.

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

I believe it is the same architects, which explains the striking similarity in layout. If I'm seeing it right that Baxter has the press box above the suites with an open concourse all the way around, that would be a major upgrade over the Amsoil layout, where only about 70% of the concourse is open.

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

If anyone knows any season ticket holders who are looking to unload tickets for Saturday, home opening weekend against Air Force, let me know. I'd be going with fans of college hockey but not UNO or Air Force fans, so we won't go if people are looking to get ridiculous $ for them, but it may be my only chance to catch ANY college hockey all season, and I'm already gonna be in Omaha the next night, so figured it'd be a good chance to check out the new rink and campus (as all our other Omaha trips never went near campus).

Red Cows said he thinks there's no way to get reasonably priced tickets; I consider that a challenge!

If you are still looking, let me know. We have our tickets for saturday the 24th available as of right now. Section 212.

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

Commercial for Baxter Auto group, who hold the naming rights for the arena, obviously, that features Baxter Arena in it. All shot in Omaha:

Hence, the automotive themed names of our parking lots as well (lots are Lexus, Mercedes, Jeep, Infiniti, Audi, and Volkswagen).

Here are what the Zamboni's look like:

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

Upgrade to UNO's taco cannon already in the works.

Can you say, Zamboni mounted "Taco Turret"?

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/n...cannon-ready-for-its-big-debut-210146891.html

I've known a Gatling gun version of the taco cannon exists:

.........and I wonder if that is what Eric Newton has in mind here. That will make for one diabolical looking Zamboni, that's for sure.
