New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Pretty good action flick. Didn't like the ending so much, as with these types of conspiracy movies, there are still questions left to be answered (in this case, and this isn't a spoiler, how do you escape the system?).

Liked how they added the realism of sniping (actually mentioning/taking into account the wind, trajectory, humidity, etc). Saw a great HIST or DISC or NatGeo special on sniping, and how much goes into it. It's amazing.

And Kate Mara is a POA, that's for sure. :D

Watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on TCM right now. Why it took me so long to see this movie...

Splice. Can't decide what it wants to be: Frankenstein, Species, a run-of-the-mill pop-out monster movie, a run-of-the-mill insufferable hipster ironyfest. So uneven it distinctly feels like it was written by committee, or perhaps the leaden hand of a director or producer changed it midstream from something interesting to something more hackneyed. B/B+. Bad acting, great effects.

I watched Up in the Air last week, I was very impressed.

Last night watched Crazy Heart. I enjoyed this one too. Jeff Bridges was incredible, and definitely deserved the Oscar, IMO. With this movie I apparently proved to the new roommates that I can pick a decent movie, they enjoyed it as well.

American Swing

Documentary on Plato's Retreat, a swinger's club in NYC in the late 70's/early 80's. It was....interesting. It's hard to fathom something that out in the open, so to speak. I mean, it was a dance club, etc, too, but there was just a lot of sex going on.

I thought it did a good job telling the story, the good and the bad of it. Lots of raw footage, it may be a little much for some people. I guess it fit the style of the doc, since Plato's itself was rather in your face about what they were.

If you like pop culture/social-type docs, this is worth a watch.

Moderately amusing- and mostly clean- roast of George Lucas by Carrie Fischer that I stumbled across on YouTube.

On the flight to Egypt I watched The Blind Side and Invictus. I thought Invictus was great and so was Blind Side, although I dont think Sandra Bullock deserved an Oscar for it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Finally saw Citizen Kane. I don't watch a lot of movies from that era, so I'm probably missing some of its importance. But even then I thought it was really impressive.

Although I did spend a lot of time thinking about Simpsons episodes during some of the scenes. :D

Until this moment I had blotted out how terrible Wayne's World 2 was.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

Is anyone else having a lot of trouble with netflix blu-rays? The failure rate is ridiculous.

Got half way through Kagemusha and it died.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Now In Smell-O-Rama!

I might be the last person on the planet to see it, but I finally got around to Avatar last weekend.

Storyline: B/B+. Not original by any means, but not too bad.
Effects: Whatever the best grade possible could be, and then even higher. Like nothing I've ever seen, and we just have a run of the mill DVD player. I can't imagine what this would have been like on Blu-Ray. Just astonishing.

Now that I've said absolutely nothing that you didn't know already, please resume whatever you've been discussing. :D
