Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

For you sci-fi fans I found this video-article on the Top 5 Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Masterpieces. They are as follows:

Silent Running
Gattaca
Serenity
Dark City
Primer

Was wondering what any of you thought of these movies.
Their top 20 finalists are interesting especially since Serentity didn't make the final 20 but made the top 5:
Altered States
Alien3
Andromeda Strain
Dark Star
Dark City
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
eXistenZ
The Fountain
Gattaca
The Hidden
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Predator
Primer
Silent Running
Sleeper
Solaris (1972)
Solaris (2002)
Stalker
Sunshine
Time Bandits

Serenity is a good movie that probably deserves to make this list but Firefly the tv series was better than the movie. My favorites of the top 20 that didn't make tthe top 5 are Andromeda Strain and eXistenZ. Andromeda Strain is based on a Crichton book that I loved and its pretty well done considering it was made in like 1970. I remember watching eXistenZ in college and enjoying the mind***** it put me through.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Also saw Beasts of the Southern Wild over the weekend.

The story was just okay, but the performance by the young actress was worthy of the attention (nominations) it got.
I was on my way here to post about that movie as well. The wife and I watched on HBO on demand last night since there wasn't anything good on the DVR. I thought the part where they swam away and found the boat and then went to the floating bar was a bit silly, but overall we liked it a lot. The visuals were striking and the two leads were great.

I didn't care for Gattaca, but I have an unhealthy dislike for Ethan Hawke.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that the gentleman playing the father was great too.

Serenity is a lot of fun, and all the more if you like Joss Whedon's work (directed the Avengers). In Serenity, they did things that to date hadn't been done before during special effects shots. They're little things, like how they're showing the ship going through a bumpy ride, the "camera" is shaking right along with the ship to make it look more like it's filmed from another ship flying through the air. That, and it's a good story, made well.

If you're not familiar with the show Firefly, the basic premise is that there are two fugitives running from the interplanetary central government with the help of a group of smugglers. The show is a cross between sci-fi and western as humans developed the tech to leave Earth, and it's somewhat crossed with the idea of the process to settling the US's western frontier. It's not a dystopia, but it's far from idyllic too.

The basic plot of the movie is that the fugitives and smugglers happen across a government secret and they set out to expose the truth while being chased by said government. The government search team is lead by a special forces/spy type character. To say more would be to give away too much of the movie.

Any movie with Bruce Dern as the leading actor is bound to be weird. But, I enjoyed it. The Robots were the only sane characters.
Gattaca was OK, not in my top anything, but watchable - once.
Serenity -- I had not watched Firefly with any regularity, but I enjoyed this movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I saw Primer a while back. It is quite good for the budget (it was made for like $7,000 or around that). It uses a LOT of technical terms as the filmmaker (and lead actor I believe) did not want to dumb it down at all. It is a complex movie and even though I have only seen it once, I know it would require multiple viewings to really understand and follow along. Someone else said in a review "If someone tells you they got it and understood everything after only one viewing, they are either a savant or a liar."

For those that haven't heard of it, basically a couple of guys who are really smart stumble across a means of time travel and use it in attempt to get rich. From there the story line gets more complicated.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Saw Fido over the weekend.

Had high hopes for this but it failed to deliver. Just wasn't funny.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

We watched Martha Marcy May Marlene yesterday afternoon. It sucked.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Mud

It was good. Not great, too much foreshadowing (rookie mistake in my mind), but very watchable. Heck, Reese Witherspoon even did a good job. ;) If you were on the fence about it, spend the time to watch it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Probably going to check out We're the Millers this weekend. I enjoy Sudeikis, he usually makes me chuckle pretty good.

If it's half as good as the redband trailer, I have good vibes about this movie for mindless entertainment.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Finally saw Oz. Probably won't say anything new. Interesting back story but it was quite simple when you really boil it down. They probably could have cut about 30 minutes out of that movie had they took out the parts where characters were just in awe of their surroundings. Nice visuals but not a well developped story. Plus how could they do that to Mila with the makeup???

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I psyched myself up a bit too much for We're the Millers, but it is still pretty darn funny. Aniston goes for it in the stripper scene, which was neat. Doesn't get naked of course, but still fun to watch.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Olympus Has Fallen - suspend reality and enjoy the formulaic action. I thought the SecDef stole the show.
