New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Which is odd, because "This Is The End" does not look very funny to me. Just another bland Seth Rogen comedy.

If they did this trying to be "characters" I think it'd be less funny, but still somewhat funny. The fact that they are "themselves" adds a layer to it, IMO. Kind of hard to explain that nuance, but it does make a difference.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I saw Man of Steel...I am biased so take it with a grain but I loved it. The movie has flaws, but my lord the action is outstanding! It isnt Shakespeare, and this isnt Nolan' doing a character study of a hero like in the Dark Knight Trilogy, this is a being with super powers fighting other beings with super powers! This is a great foundation (assuming it makes enough) for further movies.

As I said, I am biased but I think the critics are looking at this movie completely wrong.

Oz

Well, um.....to be honest, the green screen scenes were so f*ing obvious and distracting it took a lot from the movie. They were that bad. I gave it 3/5 on Netflix, but if the green screen issues were fixed/watchable? I would have given it a 4/5. Love all the nods to The Wizard Of Oz, and it's a great origin movie. All the actors did very well, and even the CGI characters were done well. I definitely would recommend watching it, and I LOVE The Wizard Of Oz, which made me biased (anti-Oz) going into this one.

Edit: Handy: the same Star Trib critic that ripped This Is The End also ripped Man Of Steel (though he did give it 2.5/4 stars). And gave away a couple spoilers. I definitely think he's trying to be That Guy.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Which guy reviewed it? I dislike them both but for different reasons :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

It has been the opposite for me...the vast majority liked it or loved it. (I would say 70/30) That is a large cross section of people too. I am taking my dad to see it Sunday and i am intrigued to see what he says.

If nothing else, the action scenes alone make everything that came before it look like childs play. The last 40 minutes of the film is insane.

Doesnt matter what critics say, what matters is it is tracking at $125 million this weekend domestically so WB is doing a happy dance. It already made back its advertising budget before it was even released so as long as it didnt bomb internationally all is well.

I'll see it eventually. I don't expect another Superman II (Donner Cut), and if anyone else is, that's a big mistake. That expectation could be part of the bad reviews. I expect a fun, action-packed movie where I can have some popcorn and a beverage and be entertained.

Hansel & Gretel

Meh.

It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't a good movie either. Just the all too standard fantasy/fairy tale remake movie.

Gawd. Had forgotten about that movie. And apparently you reinforced the reason I never watched it.

Utterly forgettable other than some nice looking actresses.

There is no doubt that some of the negative reviews are because they expect the Reeve Superman. That is why Superman Returns got rave reviews from some of these same critics. (and me) Nostalgia is a powerful force and lets be honest, when you think of Superman you think of Reeve. The same wasnt true for Batman or any other hero really.

Other critics have their own reasons. Fans have theirs too and they are all legit of course even if I dont agree with them. As I said, I am biased I love Superman (in various different portrayals over the years) so it was starting out on good footing. That is why I put more stock in my friend Jimmys saying it was "Phenomenal!" than in my own love for the film because he isnt letting his bias cloud him. When he told me that I could stop smiling.

The movie is far from perfect, and there were points where I went...wait really???? But for every plothole and weird twist of logic there was 2-3 moments where I went "YES!" I think you will be hard pressed, even if you hate the movie overall, to not watch the War on Krypton, the Showdown in Smallville and the Battle in Metropolis and think "Now THAT is what I think would happen if Superman existed in the real world". I mean it is visceral and the carnage is ridiculous! No cheap gimmicks, no flying backwards to change time just a bunch of Kryptonians destroying each other :D

I have to admit, the drunk Superman scene in III always makes me laugh hysterically. Especially the guy in the background: "Superman's DRUNK!" :D

The Experiment

Males volunteer for a 2-week experiment, playing guard/prisoner roles. No violence is allowed, but punishment for breaking the rules are green-lit. They get paid $1000/day. If anything goes against the rules of the experiment, no one gets paid.

Very good movie. Reminded me of the documentary "We Live In Public" (which is a MUST WATCH, in my opinion; friggin' scary) in how people will react in a certain situation. Some of the foreshadowing was over the top, and for veteran movie-goers it gives the movie away, but no matter. Still entertaining. I say this is a "should watch."

When I think of Reeves I think of dated blue screen effects, awkward slow motion wire work, and being drastically overrated just cause he looked the part. :p

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Handy, you almost have me convinced. Might have to buck it up and take the kids to the IMAX 3D, because if I'm doing this thing in the theater I'm going all the way.

Reeve nailed it because he balanced a sweetness with badassness and everything in between. He was believable in that part despite how unbelievable a role it can be.
