Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

What is your least favorite song? I didn't notice one missing, so maybe I'm not as familiar with Les Mis as I thought. I did notice that "A Little Fall of Rain" was cut short which upset me because Eponine is my favorite character.

Other than Russell Crowe's clipped phrases and barely acceptable singing, I thought it was a great movie. At least he wasn't American Idol auditions bad.

Least favorite is "Dog Eat Dog" - when Thenardier is pulling jewelry off corpses in the gutter. Never liked it.

"Turning" was also cut short - I like the song, but it's non-essential to the story, I guess.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Late last night on TCM I caught "Rififi" -- which I'd never heard of. But I watched it because in the intro the guy said how this movie (made in France in 1955) was the 1st modern caper movie -- "modern" in the sense that they show all the prep work the robbers do ahead of time, and they show the robbery as it happens, etc. And how that sets the template for The Italian Job, and all the Oceans movies, etc.

So -- not something I'd normally look out for (the French black & white movie part, that is) -- but a pretty cool movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Spent the New Year holiday going to the cinema and watching movies at home.

Saw Jack Reacher on Sunday afternoon. I haven't read the book(s) so I don't have a point of reference, but I thought that it was a "2 popcorn tub" flick. :D
Cruise did what he always does in his action flicks, but Bobby Duvall stole the show as the crusty Gunny and range owner.
There were some parts that defied belief - especially the chase scene through the narrow streets of downtown Pittsburgh. Been there, and any Yinzer will tell ya that ain't happening. ;)
The two knuckleheads that attacked Reacher in the house -- how did such a dangerous international criminal (my term) choose those two? And why the detective? He said in the quarry trailer that Reacher would learn why he joined with "The Prisoner", but I don't think that the reason was revealed.

Finally saw the Hurt Locker and Ted. It wasn't hard to see why Hurt Locker won Best Picture -- very intense from start to finish. Ted was hilarious at times, disgusting at others. Hmmm, reminded me of Porky's. ;) The CGI was fantastic, especially during the famous fight scene.

Saw Les Mis yesterday. Liked it very much - there's so much more they can do with the movie than on stage, and it was fun to see things close up. Russell Crowe's first song was horrible, although he got less atrocious later (I wouldn't call him good, though). I wish they had casted a better-singing Javert, as that's one of my favorite parts. Hugh Jackman did a really good job, though, as did Samantha Barks - they were my 2 favorites. Glad they skipped my least favorite song. We did not even notice Colm Wilkinson until we saw him listed in the credits.

Samantha Barks definitely is the breakout star of it, kept wondering who she was through the movie.

Finally saw tDKR. I thoroughly enjoyed it even if there were some convoluted spots toward the end, but not totally unexpected and it didn't ruin it for me. I would have preferred that Robin save Batman rather than Catwoman, was Bane killed or just incapacitated, and what's the point of Batman living if there's no plan of Nolan/Bale continuing this particular run? I also don't buy the theory that Gordon covering for Dent would have bothered the people of Gotham with respect to a bunch of criminals going to prison. Perhaps we're past spoiler-saver time but I imagine I'm not the only one that hadn't see it yet.

Also: Did the end really intend to portray that who Batman was still a secret? He and Bruce Wayne both supposedly parrish after both returning from a similar several absence?

Perhaps I'm missing something on that...

me too. I looked her up on imdb after the movie, and she also sang Eponine's part on the Les Miserables 25th anniversary concert that aired on PBS.

I know that zombies have been done to death, but the way these ones move fast and swarm could make this movie quite creepy... and fun!

I could have sworn we'd seen fast moving zombies something like 28 Days ago.

Dear God... Some of the CGI in that clip is just awful. (Looks interesting though.)

I dont think you need to use Spoilers, the movie is on DVD now so people have had ample time. Gordon covering for Dent wouldnt have ticked off the people, but the way that cover up was used to push through new laws that basically gave the Gotham PD carte blanche when it came to stopping crime would have been repealed and many of those prisoners would have been set free. Not to mention Dent was the shiny figure, the hero to the masses you destroy that and it will have severe consequences on the psyche of the populace.

The reason Bruce Wayne lived at the end was because Bruce was allowed to have a happy ending, which is what Alfred wanted for him. Batman didnt destroy him in the end (like it did post The Dark Knight) he saved Gotham like was his mission and he was able to finally move past his issues with his parents death and Rachel's death and lead a normal life. Remember lots of people died when Bane waged war in Gotham so Bruce dying right along with Batman is not that weird a coincidence. When Batman disappeared the last time it wasnt like Bruce Wayne was MIA, he just became a Howard Hughes like recluse in Wayne Manor. He just wasnt the public face of Wayne Enterprises anymore. (though he must have been for a while since he worked on the Fusion Power Source project and didnt go into hiding it sounded like until he had it deemed a failure) He was still gossiped about and functions were held at Wayne Manor so no one would have really noticed the parallel with Batman.

As for Bane he was dead...

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Saw "Jack Reacher" on Monday. I have read a couple of the books and Tom Cruise is just wrong for that part. Reacher is not a smart-***** and he's huge. He doesn't try to intimidate people. He out thinks them. Cruise is smarmy and tiny. He plays Reacher with a lot of cutesy remarks. My friend made the comment that she was surprised they found so many small actors who could fight in order to make Cruise look human-size.

The plot and it's twists were pretty much obvious. Werner Herzog was wasted. His character is supposed to be so much more evil in the book. Duvall was fun - they beefed up that part for him. And Rosamund Pike is just gorgeous.

If you don't know the books it's an OK movie. If you've read the books, Cruise will disappoint.

The Lolly Pop Guild is tight with Cruise.

Just watched Argo. Excellent, excellent movie. Even though I knew the outcome, wow - it was suspenseful right to the end. When the stewardess announced they had left Iranian airspace, I clapped and screamed here on my couch. Everyone was great in this. The one person that absolutely deserves an Oscar for this is the production designer because every detail was so 1970s. The clothes, the glasses, the cigarettes......it was fun. God 70s clothes were fugly.

Butter

*ing. Amazing. If you are a midwesterner, this is a MUST-SEE. They nailed the nuances. What's the plot you ask? A legendary butter sculptor is asked to step down, and the competition is on for a new champion. Oh trust me, despite the WTeFF plot, it's hilarious and even touching at times.

I didn't realize there was a Jackie Robinson biopic coming out. Pretty excited for that.
