Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

No, it really is terrible. Trust me.
How can you watch that movie, and not immediately identify with the stupid things that those kids do throughout the movie? It's all of the stupid, funny stuff that happens during childhood rolled into a five-week span of storyline. The fights with brothers - regardless if you're on the Ralphie or Randy side of things, the stupid dares made, and seeing the kid with his tongue on the flagpole, the bullies, the first time you cuss in front of your parents. About the only thing to which I can't personally relate is pack of dogs tearing through the yard/house.

I'm not saying it's a cinematic masterpiece, it's just an entertaining movie that just makes anyone with a soul (yeah, that's right, I said it because it's true) sit back and laugh at their own memories playing out on screen.

I don't know. I never had any of those issues. I wasn't retarded enough to lick the flag pole. My dad didn't attach his sanity to a single lamp. I was able to figure out what "secret messages" said without some ridiculous decoder ring. I was spoiled as hell when it came to Christmas presents. I never wanted a BB gun for any number of reasons. I didn't swear in front of my parents until I was a senior in high school and it wasn't that big of a deal. I never had these issues so I honestly can't relate to it.

Even my dad, who grew up in the era the movie appears to be depicting thought it was a stupid movie.

So really what you're saying is that you lived the most boring childhood ever. This movie celebrates all the stupid things that make childhood memories great and you didn't do any of them. Sad.

No. I had a fantastic childhood. If you think losing the top three layers of skin on your tongue is entertaining and part of a good childhood, you need serious help.

Myself? No, I never did that. Witnessing someone else do it - that's great! What's a childhood without either being escorted or escorting a friend to the nurse's office a time or twelve? It's boring, that's what it is.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I stuck my tongue to a pole as a kid. Did it make my childhood? No. But it sure makes that scene funny as hell.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I hate The Wave AND A Christmas Story...I always hope that stupid kid gets run over by a snow plow or something ;)

I'll call that a wash. ;)

Watched "Rampart" tonight. Meh. Pretty much a character study, but I think it fell a little short in fluidity. It was shot almost documentary style with the cameras, and it wasn't working for me. Just because a camera is a little shaky and the picture is a little gritty doesn't automatically make the movie "more realistic." I think if they polished it up a little, and touched up the story itself, it could have been really good.

Puss N Boots. Watched it with the kids and it might be the best animated film since the first Cars.

George Harrison - Living in the Material World. Documentary on HBO about whom many would consider to their favorite Beatle. Regardless of that I thought it was very well done encapsulating his life from his youth to his many ventures post-Beatles, including working with Monty Python.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Re-watched "Curse Of The Golden Flower" and "The Grey" today. Both are so excellent. For the genre, I think the only one that I've seen that is better than "Curse" is "House Of Flying Daggers." As for those who have not seen "The Grey," it's not about Liam beating up wolves. It's more a study of a group dynamic in time of survival.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Oh man, The Grey is fantastic. I loved the ending. Especially the clip after the credits. What a fantastic way to end a movie. One of the best I have ever seen.

I wasn't fond of the post-credit bit, but the initial ending was amazingly done.

Watched Superfly, The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three (original), and Tucker And Dale Vs Evil.

All three were decent, but nothing outstanding. TADVE was funnier than I thought it would be, I'll say that.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Somebody below mentioned "Rare Exports," so I got it from the library. Should be a part of every Christmas collection.

I'll have to also post this in the video games thread...

Saw Les Mis yesterday. Liked it very much - there's so much more they can do with the movie than on stage, and it was fun to see things close up. Russell Crowe's first song was horrible, although he got less atrocious later (I wouldn't call him good, though). I wish they had casted a better-singing Javert, as that's one of my favorite parts. Hugh Jackman did a really good job, though, as did Samantha Barks - they were my 2 favorites. Glad they skipped my least favorite song. We did not even notice Colm Wilkinson until we saw him listed in the credits.

I noticed Colm Wilkinson because I thought, "hey, the bishop is a far superior singer to Russell Crowe, it's unfair to have them in the same movie" and then I recognized who the actor was.
What is your least favorite song? I didn't notice one missing, so maybe I'm not as familiar with Les Mis as I thought. I did notice that "A Little Fall of Rain" was cut short which upset me because Eponine is my favorite character.

Other than Russell Crowe's clipped phrases and barely acceptable singing, I thought it was a great movie. At least he wasn't American Idol auditions bad.
