New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Octopussy wiht Roger Moore is still my favorite Bond movie. Although I think that's because it was my favorite when I was a kid. Not necessarily because it's truly the best one.
I have the same feelings about GoldenEye, although that is also partly influenced by (a) the N64 game, and (b) the fact that it isn't an absurd joke like Octopussy is.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

"You Belong To Me" by Dylan (Natural Born Killers) also is a fave of mine. Such a calm moment in that movie (which was written by Tarantino, then made awesome by Oliver Stone; Tarantino dis-owned Stone's movie for the record).
Maybe somebody mentioned this before, but 'Dream On' by Aerosmith always makes me think of 'Miracle' (Played in the credits)

A little strange that anyone would discribe Natural Born Killers or Reservoir Dogs as elegant, but there are scenes in both of them that definitely are.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

For the first time in a few years, there's actually movies in the theater I want to see - Argo and Lincoln.

And, of course, 42 is coming out in April. Just read that Harrison Ford is playing Branch Rickey.

I have a Netflix question - maybe someone can help - I have a streaming account and a DVD account. When I add movies to my DVD queue, I would expect them to be added to my streaming queue if they are available. It looks like only the ones that were in my DVD queue when I added the streaming plan are there, and nothing that was added after that. Is there a "add to instant queue" thing I have to do? Do I need to log into my streaming device to update that queue (I have a Blu-ray player with wifi)? I can see in my DVD queue that they are available via streaming - but they don't show up in the streaming queue.

There is an "add to instant" button next to the movie you want when you are browsing their site.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Yes, it's messed up. Netflix disc and Netflix streaming are kind of separate, but not really separate. It's really annoying.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

But if I've already added the movie to my DVD queue, I don't see it. And if I add to instant, will it NOT show up in my DVD queue?

I believe that is correct. For adding movies, they are separate entities. For rating movies, I believe they are considered one entity.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Ya know what makes me laugh...see if you can figure out the logic behind this:

Fellowship of the Ring - 531 pages
The Two Towers - 416 pages
Return of the King - 626 pages
The Hobbit - 310 pages

And:

Fellowship of the Ring - 1 movie
The Two Towers - 1 movie
Return of the King - 1 movie
The Hobbit - 3 movies!!!

According to LOTR Nerds somehow 1573 pages = 3 movies AND 310 pages = 3 movies!

Face it, the splitting of a children's book into 3 movies is nothing more than a blatant cash grab. I dont care if Peter Jackson takes every scribbling written by Tolkien, his son, his wife, his mistress, his gay lover, his 5 imaginary friends and his send cousin twice removed it is a friggin joke that The Hobbit itself is a trilogy. I am sure at least 5 nerds on this board will come to Jackson's defense but it doesnt matter, he is nothing but a hack and a studio stooge for doing it as such. He is basically Michael Bay with an Oscar ;)

(sorry I saw a Hobbit Part 1 preview and felt the urge to vent...)

If the movies suck, then I'm right there with you. If they're done well and are all fun to watch, then I'll be happy. I just want something fun and done well on the movie screen to watch. (Yeah, I'm repeating myself there, but people need to not have hissy fits over every little detail in life that doesn't fit into their expectations.)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I dont doubt they will be good, I just think they are being extended out way too much to the point that it will dilute the story. There just isnt enough. Two movies maybe but 3? That is 6 hours of movie on a book you can read in 2.

Methinks you protest too much.

1. The Lord of the Rings might be the greatest epic trilogy ever made. Peter Jackson did this.
2. He's not just making The Hobbit. There is a TON of other storylines going on that will be likely included in some way. He's making a prequel to The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit as orginally written was never intended to be that.
3. It'll be better than most trilogies after everything is said and done. Stars Wars Episode 1-3 were disasters all around. Spiderman 3 was a train wreck. Even The Matrix which was a great film completely jumped the shark by movie 3. The Hobbit won't have any of these issues. The dragon. Sauron. Bilbo's epic journey. Jackson's track record. It's impossible to think this movie will be diluted in any way.

More like 7.5...

I have some concerns certainly.

I'll give Peter the benefit of the doubt as he did such a wonderful job the first time around. It could have been so bad and instead it probably couldn't have been better.

His work in King Kong is what scares me. It was on last weekend and I'd forgotten how over the top the action sequences were. Enough to make Speilberg blush and call it excessive. The whole dinosaur chase and t-rex battle was silly beyond words. Just coz you can dream it up and shoot it (create it in cgi) doesn't mean that you should.

I hope he doesn't do that to the Hobbit. I'm worried specifically about the Stone Giants (but not limited to). There's a passing line in the book that talks about them tossing boulders in the mountains during the thunderstorm. As seen in the preview, they are given some screen time. Will it turn into one harrowing miss by a boulder after the next?

There are only a few instances of that over the top stuff in LOTR and they are mostly forgiven due to how great the rest of it is. The sequence in Moria where the staircase collapses, the sequence where Legolas surfs on a shield and the way that Legolas brings down the Oliphant. I hope we don't see too much of that.

I'm a huge fan of the books and the mythology that Tolkien created and also Jackson's adaptation, but that won't mean that I'll be accepting or forgiving of anything and everything that he comes up with. Like Scooby said though, if they are each entertaining and well done, then the indulgences in terms of # of movies will be worth it - and I'll gladly pay for all three.

If he pulls a Lucas and forgets why the first 3 movies were so well received, it could be a huge disappointment.

Got my fingers crossed and hoping for another 3 great movies. Still remember how excited I was opening night of the Fellowship and how great the prologue came off and set us on our journey.

Never been as excited for movies as I was for those and they lived up to it.

EDIT: The concern comes in with whether Jackson has started to believe his own press clippings and figures that he knows what's best. Is he so full of himself that he believes that he knows best how to tell the story of the Hobbit (more so than Tolkien) . Does he try to make it into a 3-D thrill-fest instead of adapting a good story.

I was happy with 2 movies as it meant that they wouldn't have to skip anything. I hope that 3 movies aren't full of made-up things or silly action sequences. I also hope that he doesn't get too bogged down in the politics of Middle Earth like Lucas did in the second Star Wars trilogy.

Methinks you dont know what that phrase actually means. To protest too much would mean I think it is going to actually be amazing, which I dont. (and it will certainly drag on in parts seeing as there just isnt that much story) I think it is the Hobbit Nerds that are looking for any way to justify a book that 10 year olds read over a weekend being a trilogy of movies that protest too much seeing as they are clinging to every report and speculation and every unfinished tale using them to justify their position.

So what if the LOTR was the best trilogy ever...it was written that way. Ya see the amazing thing is there is 3 books in the LOTR, and each one became a movie. The rest of the trilogies or third movies you name are just worthless strawmen that have nothing to do with the problem at hand...the Hobbit is a single book, a rather short one at that, that Peter Jackson is going to drag out so much longer than need be it will make the end of the Return of the King look like a cliffhanger! (btw as much as I love ROTK I cannot for the life of me watch the last half hour anymore...I literally fall asleep) I know that you dont want to admit that, and I know unless it sucks on a level of Attack of the Clones you and your ilk will circle jerk around it like Magic Card players when a new set comes out but hey that is your problem not mine :D

(that will be the last time I discuss the Nerdgasm until it comes out)

Now on to movies that should have been trilogies:

Lincoln friggin rocked! There is no one, and I mean no one, on any stage or in any movie that is even in the same galaxy as DDL when it comes to acting. His Lincoln is so spot on with how he is written in Team of Rivals that part of me thinks they actually went back in time and stole Lincoln and put him in the film. I almost never use this word, but I can honestly say the film is a masterpiece and if it doesnt win a boatload of Oscars then the Academy might as well just stop. It is in a rare league all by itself and it makes me just sad to see shlock like Twilight making hundreds of millions instead of Lincoln...but then there is no accounting for taste.

You could wait and see it before forming your own conclusions using your assumptions of how it will be to justify your position.

Just sayin'.

Like I said, I have my own reservations, but will wait and see. If it sucks, it will be apparent and I'll admit it.

Hoping for the circle-jerk! :D

Re-posting my opinion from GPL:

Skyfall was better than Casino Royale I'd argue. More change of pace, more variety and it was darker and more brooding. In addition I liked that there were relatively for Bond minimal forays into technological b.s., they continued the theme that Bond is flawed, they showed a tiny glimpse (perhaps only time ever?) of his past, Bardem was brilliant (although I feared at the beginning he was going to be a caricature) and the cinematography as good as in any Bond film ever. I think the weakest link of the whole film for me was Ralph Fiennes who I thought added very little. Easily the best Bond film since Connery, perhaps all the way back to Goldfinger.

I just came from the theater to see this. I'd agree with most of this, though Feinnes's role was to setup M. It it hadn't been his specific character, they'd have found another to do the same.

Probably true and he will should be more dynamic in the next tilt.
