Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot
I dont doubt they will be good, I just think they are being extended out way too much to the point that it will dilute the story. There just isnt enough. Two movies maybe but 3? That is 6 hours of movie on a book you can read in 2.
More like 7.5...
I have some concerns certainly.
I'll give Peter the benefit of the doubt as he did such a wonderful job the first time around. It could have been so bad and instead it probably couldn't have been better.
His work in King Kong is what scares me. It was on last weekend and I'd forgotten how over the top the action sequences were. Enough to make Speilberg blush and call it excessive. The whole dinosaur chase and t-rex battle was silly beyond words. Just coz you can dream it up and shoot it (create it in cgi) doesn't mean that you should.
I hope he doesn't do that to the Hobbit. I'm worried specifically about the Stone Giants (but not limited to). There's a passing line in the book that talks about them tossing boulders in the mountains during the thunderstorm. As seen in the preview, they are given some screen time. Will it turn into one harrowing miss by a boulder after the next?
There are only a few instances of that over the top stuff in LOTR and they are mostly forgiven due to how great the rest of it is. The sequence in Moria where the staircase collapses, the sequence where Legolas surfs on a shield and the way that Legolas brings down the Oliphant. I hope we don't see too much of that.
I'm a huge fan of the books and the mythology that Tolkien created and also Jackson's adaptation, but that won't mean that I'll be accepting or forgiving of anything and everything that he comes up with. Like Scooby said though, if they are each entertaining and well done, then the indulgences in terms of # of movies will be worth it - and I'll gladly pay for all three.
If he pulls a Lucas and forgets why the first 3 movies were so well received, it could be a huge disappointment.
Got my fingers crossed and hoping for another 3 great movies. Still remember how excited I was opening night of the Fellowship and how great the prologue came off and set us on our journey.
Never been as excited for movies as I was for those and they lived up to it.
EDIT: The concern comes in with whether Jackson has started to believe his own press clippings and figures that he knows what's best. Is he so full of himself that he believes that he knows best how to tell the story of the Hobbit (more so than Tolkien) . Does he try to make it into a 3-D thrill-fest instead of adapting a good story.
I was happy with 2 movies as it meant that they wouldn't have to skip anything. I hope that 3 movies aren't full of made-up things or silly action sequences. I also hope that he doesn't get too bogged down in the politics of Middle Earth like Lucas did in the second Star Wars trilogy.
