new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Watched The Watchmen for the first time today. What do comic book afficianados think about that movie? I can't tell if it was what it was supposed to be or if it missed the mark. I thought they did a great job of character development (even if it made for a long movie), the effects were decent enough and I really liked that they dug into the, "flawed super hero" angle and being "banned" from socieity as much as they did. Of course The Incredibles already did that.

just kidding, I know Watchmen goes further back

I was a little disappointed with it - it just felt shallow. I should watch the longer cuts of it, as that may just be the compactness/limitations of the movie format. The only thing that I think was really missing from the film was a sense of the regular people of the city. The novel spends some time showing the lives of some of the people who later die in Ozymandias's Solution. For me, that really drove home the shock of what happened. There were also a couple of scenes that I thought would be shown better on screen (I like Zack Snyder's action sequences, but I think he's lacking in more dramatic directing, if that make sense).

I think that if I hadn't read the novel, I'd have enjoyed it more (much like many other book-to-movie adaptations).

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Ultimate Edition will add in all of the Black Freighter and scenes at the news stand so that's another ~20 minutes or so on top of what they added to the Director's Cut.
In my mind it's not really worth it to know why the newstand guy gets a hug before he dies.:p Also, wasn't the black freighter just a story a character was reading? And I was more talking about the big walls of text that cropped up every so often.

Ahh I get it, you want there to be intermittent "Star Wars"-esque hunks of stuff for people to read.

Compelling cinema right there. Here folks, READ YOUR ARSES OFF!

No, I didn't want there to be that. I was happy they streamlined it.

And it looks like there's an intent to have each 'side' have a different color style to it. Blue people are bright colors while normal humans are more drab less saturated colors.
So they've found yet another way to dumb down the big Hollywood movies even more? It's one thing to suspend reality, or know what you're getting with a Michael Bay movie, but it's another thing entirely to shove your nose in the thought of how stupid the director thinks his audience is.

I watched GI Joe the other day....why did ice fall down through the water?

There was a GI Joe movie...whats next Dukes of Hazzard?

I liked Watchmen a lot...havent seen the Directors Cut yet though!

You don't find it fascinating/revolutionary that the bright blue people/creatures are "brightly colored", and that the normally drab-colored humans are "drab colored"? Or that the habitat of creatures that live in nature is bright and vivid, while the habitats of the humans, who appear to be mostly soldiers, are less saturated? That's...well, actually, all of that seems like any other project with similar themes... hmm...

I never used the words fascinating or revolutionary to describe it. It's a rather simple technique that is loved by infomercials the world over. Everything that is hard and bad is obviously in black/white, while their product is good and wonderful, so it's in full bright color! Doesn't make it any less useful for film makers to try and evoke emotions or subconcious associations that people do automatically.

Oh and 'Battle for Terra' is the movie I mentioned when I first brought it up. There's also about 5 trillion other stories/movies that deal with the same subject matter.

I'm watching the Director's Cut of Watchmen, noticed Rorschach without his mask before the big 'unveiling', didn't notice it theaters.

Kinda the way it goes in the book.

"Wait, THAT guy is Rorschach? Awesome."

It is there in the regular cut...I know for sure he is at the funeral and another scene cause I pointed out to my buddy in the theatre. They do a good job of just sticking him in the background of the scene with his sign...you almost always miss him :D

I think the preview for Extract looks hilarious and might be worth seeing :)

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

On that note, does Jason Bateman have the ability to play any other character besides Michael Bluth?

You mean besides this guy? :p

Slap Shot,

There will be no sequel to Watchmen because the comic nerds would riot so the movie would bomb worse than Gigli.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Well, I'm obviously out of the loop on something. Remember, I know nothing about comic books - I just liked the movie and felt like the ending left the door somewhat open.

It does, but Moore never wrote a sequel to his book so no way would a sequel ever be allowed or accepted. Man the ridiculous rants we would hear from the nerds and Moore himself would be epic though!

EODS...that title is friggin awesome!

Precisely why a sequel should be an intentional farce!

Think of it as like a real life Hamlet 2.
