Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Donnie Darko was a favorite among the more pretentious people in college (people who refused to admit they liked Indiana Jones or The Rock or Back to the Future, for instance). Then again, so was American Beauty. :p
You throw "The Rock" in there?
the wife said it was pretty true to the source material and no worse than the cartoon, so to that extent she wasn't disappointed in it.
Your wife has very low standards to what is being true to a source material.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I know that I'm verrrry late to this party, but I watched Bowling for Columbine and Michael Moore Hates America last night (back to back no less). I knew that Moore had fudged some stuff but it was interesting to see it documented that way. Of course, Michael Wilson wasn't exactly above board either.

At some point in "Hates America" the point is made that either you love Michael Moore films because you agree with them or you don't like them because you disagree. Personally, I disagree with Moore, but enjoy his films.

Yeah. One of these things is not like the others.

The Rock is a top 5 pure action movie of all time.

In no particular order:
Die Hard
The Rock
Terminator 2
Predator
Speed

I like all the movies you named...I am not a snob :D

I love Donnie Darko, and if Back to the Future or the Rock or Indy are on you best bet on me watching them :)

The absence of Raiders has nullified your list.

Raiders is more of a serial adventure than a pure action flick, in my mind.

In video game terms, it's the difference between Zelda and Doom. In both games you go around killing everything in your path, but they're still two different genres.

Really? You think Predator is somehow on a different level than the Rock?

And Speed, like Die Hard, was what action movies were compared to for a few years afterward - Passenger 57 was Die Hard on a plane, Executive Decision was Speed on a plane, Under Siege was Die Hard on a boat, etc.

This is the first non-Yooper reference on this forum I didn't get. ;)

I'm not sure what the gradations of "action flick" are, though I'd put both Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk in my (broad) category.

FYP

And yes Predator, espcially if you want just a pure action flick, is on a different level from and the rock. Which I only find notable in that it's a watchable Micheal Bay movie.

Bandidas:

What a turd of a movie. I didn't expect much; basically hoped that having Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz in the same movie might make it worthwhile for a time-waster, but the only way they could have saved this movie was via a lesbian scene. Obviously that didn't happen. The movie is that bad.

I Live In Fear:

Akira movie. Guy is paranoid about the A-Bomb/H-Bomb in post-WWII Japan, wants to move to Brazil. Family wants to declare him incompetent. Sympathetic court arbritrator has a tough choice. It's a decent movie, but far from Akira's best. This actually may be his "worst" movie that I've seen so far (maybe have seen a dozen or so).

Super 8 - I liked it, some of the kid characters were annoying as hell but they were only sparsely put in. I did not like how overpowered the alien was. It had a neat spaceship design and with the way it was supposed to live it being super strong is reasonable but all the extra physic abilities just beg the question of how they could have kept something like this in captivity.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

My girlfriend and I went and saw Midnight In Paris last night. Pretty good, especially the scenes with Hemingway and Dali. Also, Kurt Fuller (who plays Rachel McAdams' character's father) is a great "that guy".

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

This might be stupid.

Just finished watching Inception again.....thoguht came to me. Wouldn't the rich kid recognize all of the people around him on the plane from his dream??

I liked it as well. Though it was full of logical inconsistencies, I thought it was fairly good. It did start off stronger than it ended, IMO.

Interesting thought. First I thought it would be because they represented themselves as people that were helping him in Arthur, Eames, and Cobb's dreams. But they are the ones that kidnap him in Yusuf's, and they don't wear the masks the whole time around him, nor do they always have the bag on his head. I know Eames disguises himself to Fischer often, but I don't think he did when he jumped in the cab with him. Neither did Saito or Arthur.
