New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Interesting thought. First I thought it would be because they represented themselves as people that were helping him in Arthur, Eames, and Cobb's dreams. But they are the ones that kidnap him in Yusuf's, and they don't wear the masks the whole time around him, nor do they always have the bag on his head. I know Eames disguises himself to Fischer often, but I don't think he did when he jumped in the cab with him. Neither did Saito or Arthur.

And it could be chalked up to deja vu. They know enough to warp the mind, they could warp it enough to make the subject think: Wow, that guy looks familiar, but how? I never met him before. Weird.

Ok, this new "Zookeeper" movie totally reminds me of:

This is probably what Nolan would say if some crazed lunatic held a gun to his head and made him answer these questions. He played pretty fast and loose with a few things. (limbo) Knowing that, I usually stop looking into it any further and enjoy it for what it was, a summer action flick. :)

Yeah pretty much. If forced, I come up with an answer like this. But lay off the improbables, and enjoy the movie. 'Nuff said.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

This might be stupid.

Just finished watching Inception again.....thoguht came to me. Wouldn't the rich kid recognize all of the people around him on the plane from his dream??
My theory was that when you dream you insert all kinds of people into them. People you have only seen once in passing, people you've never met, etc. You've just chosen their body/face as the embodiment of the character in the dream. So to have a person in your dream may not set off any alarm bells if you see them again in person. After all, it was a dream.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Recent films:

Dinner For Schmucks: This had some of the worst kind of absurd humor in it. I very nearly stopped the DVD player several times, but thankfully opted to just fast forward through Paul Rudd's awkward lunch with the rich client. Thankfully, there was a lot of really good jokes in the dialogue, I really liked Jemaine Clement as the absurd, pretentious artist. The "mousterpieces" presentation during the dinner scene made me glade that I kept watching. I particularly liked the old-timey joke about the blind guy having no idea if he's any good at painting.

Super 8: Sort of falters in the final act, but overall a REALLY good update on the late 70s/early 80s Spielberg alien flicks. A few too many of the "sudden shock" thrills for my taste, but overall I thought it was very well directed. Not too many closeups during action sequences (which can be a pain in the *** when anyone not named Paul Greengrass does it), and I thought it did a good job of letting the camera tell the story in simple, efficient ways (the "days without an accident" opening shot was brilliant). Some of the plot points are absurd, but it's an alien/monster movie. What do you really expect?

The Hangover Part II: It's almost a remake, really. Hits pretty much all the same beats in very similar ways. It gets a huge discredit for being so repetitive. On the plus side, there were a few little items that they did differently that were pretty hilarious (I for one LOVED Ken Jeong in the scene where everyone woke up). The scene with the tranny stripper does bring up the age old question about gross-out jokes: is it really funnier when you see the whole thing, or would it be funnier to just see the characters be grossed out by it?

The scene when Ken gets woken up was one of the un-funny scenes, I thought. It was painfully obvious of what the joke was, well before the "payoff" clip. I almost cringed in embarrassment that they couldn't do something more original with that. Other than that, I pretty much agree with your assessment of the movie.

This doesn't make the movie less funny overall, but it's not one you HAVE to see in theaters.

Watched Johnny Dangerously on Netflix the other day. LOVE that movie! :)

Also, while it had no other redeeming qualities, Matrix 2 was an amazing action flick.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Dinner for Schmucks was terrible. It should not have been but it is one of the few movies I wish I had walked out on. Just dumb and not funny dumb where you can laugh about how dumb it was dumb like "any exec, writer, director and most of the actors should not only be ashamed they made this movie, but they should be banned from making movies for at least a year" dumb.

I would sooner watch Shakespeare done by a guy with a stuttering problem than ever even contemplate watching any scene from that movie ever again. I would pay lots of money to have my seeing it burned out of my memory.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Dinner for Schmucks would have been a lot more tolerable if it were more dialogue heavy. The whole awkward comedy thing that they went for in the first 3/4 of the movie was just flat out terrible.

Went and saw the new transformers because why not complete the **** trilogy. I don't want to say it was good but it was watchable if you ignore the endless amounts of plot holes. In fact the movie is literally one big plot hole after another that completely invalidate whatever background they were trying to establish in the previous 2. The scale of it was finally big enough. Some of the action scenes were somehow not Bay staring at a 30ft tall robot 2 ft away staring at it's crotch while it spews forth alien fluids.

But he needs to learn that humor and horror don't always mix. At one point you just witness dozens of people being vaporized and then Bay's ********* self insert (Witwicky) starts making jokes. The usual Old Pio level military fanwank is there. There clearly was no ending till the last minute considering how fast it ends and the two major villains are killed within about 5 seconds of each other. No clue how they messed up Cybertron as bad as they did. For some reason it looks like a beehive from hell rather than the few scenes of it before.

Another problem with the movie that people in Chicago are having:

The movie was shot here last summer... For whatever reason, people are screaming bloody murder over scenes that make Point A seem like it's across the street from Point B when in reality they are many miles apart... I've never heard people ***** and moan about this happening in movie land before, but apparently this is a big deal now... I guess people are just ready to blow this movie up already....

Ask people in Minnesota about how big District 5 is and you get the same response. :D

Fulton Reed lets everyone know that he was from Stillwater in the second one. Definitely NOT D5. Coon Rapids should have won that game. :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

People in the Bay Area love to whine about how Ben is driving the wrong direction over the Oakland Bay Bridge in The Graduate.

This is the thing about the Chicago people... Yes, technically these are "problems", but if you aren't from here, there is no way you would know this... I'm sure stuff like this happens all the time in movie-land... It's something that you can mention about a movie, but there is no need to crucify the movie because of this, IMO...

Yeah it is a rather large district if it encases Edina, Minneapolis and Stillwater! Man who knew peewee hockey was doing so bad that they needed to merge ;)

Plus, Charlie's mom works at Mickey's diner which is in St. Paul ;)

One night, my roomie and I couldnt sleep so we stayed up and watched and figured out everything that was a mistake...it was a long list :p
