Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I watched Biutiful last night. It is a Spanish movie starring Javier Bardem, that was nominated/won a bunch of awards last year. I don't usually like watching movies with subtitles because I'll usually watch a movie while messing around on the computer at the same time, or go to the kitchen during the movie for a couple minutes, which are both tough to do when you have to read the dialog. Regardless, I gave this one a try, and it was an excellent movie. The story is really anything but "beautiful" as the title sugests, it is a sad, ugly story about a criminal in the slums in Barcelona trying to get his affairs in order, family and "business" after he is diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. I would recommend this one, but only if you're in the mood for this type of movie.

Haha... people too obsessed with their phones to use common sense are hilarious. And stupid.
Hahahaha!! yeah, I saw that the other day. Really genius move on the chicka there. Hell, in this day in age, you're spending what, at least 10 bucks a pop just to be at a movie, closer to 15 if its an IMAX or 3D movie. Sit down, shut up, turn your phone off and enjoy the freaking movie that you or somebody else paid good money for to enjoy.

I heard that on the radio today! If I'm ever in Austin, I'm going to the Drafthouse THE-A-TER!
Actually, I believe that its kind of a small chain of movie houses in Texas. Think its one of those that are leading the way with doing dinner and a movie within the theater itself.

I was curious about that one. I think I have it in my queue. And bigmrg, there's a place in the NW Twin Cities' suburbs that does that: http://www.newhopecinemagrill.com/

It's not a bad place at all.

Midnight in Paris.

Awesome. An 8 out of 10. Almost as good as Vicky Christina Barcelona, way better than Whatever Works.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Movie Geek Not Snob buddy of mine raved about Super 8.

I don't really know what the hell the plot is, but it sounds interesting. Still, I'll wait for rental, like 99% of the movies I see.

X-Men First Class

First hour was excellent. The final 30 hours (at least that's how long it seemed) were being hit in the face with a frying pan by Michael Bay.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Saw Super 8. It wasnt bad. But I felt that it didnt live up to the mystery surrounding it before its release. Once the story started coming together and the whole point is revealed it just kind of fell flat for me. Still better than most of the other crap out there I would say though. Also saw a preview for a movie that I cant even remember the name. But it was basically Rock'em Sock'em robots. Yeah. It looked stupid. But previews for Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens looked great though.

True Grit

As a huge fan of the original, I was totally against this "re-imagining" of it. After the reviews (both of critics and normal people), I was still hesitant. After seeing it: hells to the yes. They kept the same dialogue, for the most part, in what I consider the best parts were (the courtroom scene and the outnumbered gunfight scene), which still get me laughing/fired up respectively, and while the ending is a bit different, still was quality.

The only nitpick I had was the overblown "accents" (for lack of a better term) of Cogburn and LaBeouf, moreso of Cogburn. And that's nitpicky at its best. Barry Pepper (who played Ned Pepper) was phenomenal in taking the place of Robert Duvall. Even sounded like him. And Bridges' speech patterns really echoed Wayne's from the original. Loved it. It showed a knack for detail.

Oh, one other nitpick: in the outnumbered scene, there were no "twirling reloads" of a shotgun (which T2 copied, and was awesome). A little disappointed in that. But I'll live. ;)

Must-see (and stress that the original must be seen, also). Also purchase-worthy.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Surprised you didn't nitpick the ending. The snake bite and riding back to town thing made me want to laugh.

Eh, it was dramatic, further solidified the soft side of Cogburn, which in the original he really balanced that out quite nicely between cold-hearted/father figure, etc. Call it poetic license or whatever. I didn't mind it. It's not like he died on his last step or anything, while delivering Mattie to the doc. ;)

I'd pretty much agree with this. I thought it was pretty good, but based on people saying it was a throwback to how movies used to be made and all that, I expected a classic. It's defiantly good, but not great though.

That ending wasn't a nitpick, it was a gaping suck.

The rest of the film was fine, though. Solid B. It'll make some of the youngins see the original, and that's good.

Based on the trailer for Super 8, they should hand out raincoats to the audience, since they're go to be covered in Spielberg's mawkish honey.

The Wild And Wonderful Whites Of West Virginia

JFC. These people need to get off my planet. At the very least, stop reproducing. I recommend watching it, and treating it like a hillbilly Jersey Shore. I just can't believe there are people out there that are actually like this. It's friggin' scary.

Edit: forgot to mention this about True Grit: Mattie comes across much less bratty than in the original, and for that I am forever thankful.

Yep, and do you really want a scary thought? The Whites are just the ones that have managed to get Semi-famous for doing what they do. There's plenty more of them out there.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Whoever said they liked "The Town" better when it was called "Heat" was spot-on. Good movie, but I'd rather watch the original.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Donnie Darko. It felt like American Beauty on a bad acid trip, but I enjoyed it far more.

Donnie Darko was a favorite among the more pretentious people in college (people who refused to admit they liked Indiana Jones or The Rock or Back to the Future, for instance). Then again, so was American Beauty. :p

I thought both were ok - technically good, but overrated.

Then again, I just sat through the Last Airbender because my wife wanted it from the Netflix queue. I thought it was pretty bad since it couldn't make up it's mind whether it wanted to be serious like Crouching Tiger or cheesy like Kung-Fu Hustle, and got stuck in the middle which is no-man's land. More proof that M. Night Shamalayan-ding-dong was a one-hit wodner. the wife said it was pretty true to the source material and no worse than the cartoon, so to that extent she wasn't disappointed in it.
