Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Just watched The Express and loved it. Apparently even though I don't like football, I'm a sucker for football movies. REALLY enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about Ernie Davis, so I can't vouch for the historical accuracy, but it was entertaining.

I'm told that its scant at best.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Yeah it depends on who you ask. The broad story is true but it was definitely "Disney-fied" if you ask people who knew Ernie Davis. (and the Syracuse coach...)

There is a nice writeup of the inaccuracies in the wiki writeup.

That said, it is a movie, and the important stuff is pretty much spot on.

I enjoyed The King's Speech quite a bit, but I didn't think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The more I hear from people seeing it (and this is my opinion as well) it was a great movie, but it wasn't The Godfather (or the like). I think the media went overboard on it (gee, surprise surprise).

If you enjoy crude humor...you absolutely must see Your Highness...saw it last weekend and couldnt stop laughing. Great stuff.

Apocalypse Now Redux.

The added/extended scenes weren't the problem. In fact, the added/extended scenes (the details of what was added/extended) added to the movie. It was Brando's scenes. The only worthwhile scene was his polio story. Other than that, the movie screeched to a halt when Sheen found Brando. Top 50 movie? Mayyyyyyyybe. Overrated? Yes. It's good, but I can't say it's as great as others say it is.

Insult at will.

I thought it was a good movie the first time I saw it, by on each viewing it's gotten better -- like a book, that to me is the marker between "good" and "great." (Personally I thought the extra scenes in Redux were ridiculous and unnecessary -- your mileage may vary.)

Finding Kurtz is the problem every movie has that has a quest and an epilogue. The search has suspense -- the finding is almost always an anti-climax. "Heart of Darkness" itself has a similar pacing issue.

I read that the plantation scene was massively extended, and to me, that was a great scene. Really added depth, IMO. Kept pace, and added substance to the characters. As for the climax, it just didn't fit with the pacing of the rest of the movie. It was rambling when rambling wasn't really needed. I liked the last 10 minutes, the symbolism of the slaughter, but other than that...the middle part of the final part? Meh. At best.

Speaking of that, I saw the same thing with The Blind Side. Maybe or maybe not as "accurate" as The Express, but definitely Disney-fied. Good movie, though, and I really don't see what set Bullock apart from the rest in the way of award nominations. Yes, she had the cold b*tch with a warm heart character down, but I don't think it was anything award-worthy.

Also saw The Insider. Thought it was also pretty good. Crowe is convincing me, movie by movie, that he is a good actor. And of course you get the Pacino Yell, although you realllllly have to wait for it in this movie. ;) And man, did they make Mike Wallace look like a d-bag (yes, I know the real Mike was not pleased with his portrayal).

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Finally got around to watching the Hangover last night, after it'd been sitting in the red Netflix envelope for about 2 months. Meh. Maybe I just went in with too high of expectations after hearing about it, but it was really hit and miss. Tyson's cameo was great, but I never came close to rolling on the floor with laughter. Definitely no inclination of seeing the sequel at the theaters this summer.

Watched Invictus. Good movie, but they did a crap job at updating the timeline during the movie.

It starts in Feb 1990, and then all of the sudden there is a reference to it being 1 year before the RWC and then of course the movie ends with the RWC in 1995.

For some reason it's at 83% at Rotten Tomatoes. Guess some critics seem to not mind it.

I read Thor review today and they said it was good. I was confused. Comic Super Hero movies are nearly never good.

I've only seen the commercials. It looks like one of those movies I might catch on a rental or MAYBE a matinee if I'm bored. or maybe I'm just being pessimistic, thinking that the Marvel cash cow has to explode sometime soon.

Well, you got another full year of that with THE AVENGERS coming out next summer... I don't think it's going anywhere...
