New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Middle Men with Luke Wilson, Giovanni Rissi, James Caan and a few others. Apparently it's based upon the guys that started the internet pr0n industry and how they got in way over their heads with shady business partners. I thought it was worth the rental, but thought it could have been much more given the story and the outstanding cast.

I am actually really looking forward to this... I'm curious as to how they will tie in the 7-8 "pre-quils" that will be out beforehand... I think it's a unique and interesting concept...

I would think that they're going to at least have both Thor and Captain America be involved in this promotion campaign. Wonder if it's going to be anything close to what they did with the Dark Knight.

The Fighter

All awards were deserved. Quality movie. Bale is going to be remembered as one of the greats, that's for sure.

What really amazed me with Bale's performance in that movie is when you get to the credits and they show you the REAL Dicky. Bale's performance is just uncanny.

That opening scene, where Bale is antsy, and has that blankish stare.....I was 3/4 sold at that point. "End Of The Century," a doc on the Ramones, had an interview with Dee Dee Ramone (heroin addict), and Dee Dee acted the exact same way. It was, like you say, uncanny.

I ended up liking The Fighter far, far more than I ever thought I would, although Marky Mark still can't act his way out of a paper bag.

I like him in certain roles. He was serviceable in this one, although it was hard to judge since even Amy Adams outacted him (and broke type) in The Fighter. "Shooter" comes to mind. Really liked him in that. "The Departed" he was decent. Have heard he was phenomenal in "Fear" but I have yet to see it.

If you define good acting as being the only person on screen you are paying any attention to, she definitely outacted him when she crawled into bed in her underwear in that one scene.

Well, I can't argue with the near nekkid scene. ;)

But she did well. Definitely not a role I'd see her in, and not a role I would think she did well in. Oscar-worthy? Oh hell no. But she did a good job.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I watched the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Girl Who Played with Fire, and the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest recently. All three movies were very good, though I did like the books better (no surprise). Watching the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as a stand alone is a good movie in its own right. The other two require viewing the previous movies (or reading the books) before viewing. They're all in Swedish with English subtitles, or you can do the dubbed version, but I just didn't think it would sit right with me. Hollywood is in the process or remaking them for this market. If you're reading the books and then watching the movies, I'd suggest reading the first two books before watching the first movie. Some of the things referenced within the first book, and then answered in the second book (All the Evil, for those who've read) are given away immediately in the first movie.

The fun thing about watching them in Swedish is that they really do sound like the Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show.

Who said anything good about the movie Fear? That movie was pathetic and horrible.

People in general. And I've learned that you are all over the board, in relation to what I enjoy. Not a knock by any means. Different tastes and expectations I suppose.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Battle Los Angeles was exactly what I expected with a couple nice surprises of emphasis. The beasties were revealed a little early but in good Cloverfield jumpy partial view form. The paint by numbers mawkish subplots to keep the chicks interested were almost completely absent. The central psychological drama played out predictably but not unpleasantly. B+.

Watching The Fabulous Dorseys now, 40's biopic about the bandleader brothers. If you like movies of that type and period I highly recommend, but you have to go in forgiving the tropes.

Dude, the movie was terrible. It is genric and cliche and this was back when Resse really sucked. (think Cruel Intentions...Resse's part) I love William Peterson and even HE sucked in the movie!

The American. It felt like a quiet, understated version of the Bourne trilogy. I don't recall seeing much feedback on this one but I enjoyed it.

Is this based on the book by the same name? I liked the book, and i'd watch the movie but didn't know they ever made one.

The little feedback I read about is that it didn't have enough action, was slow-paced, and was rather boring. Too bad I don't mind a slow-paced non-action movie if it's done right. I do want to see it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I just went to Blockbuster and bought movies cheap! The highlights though are Sideways, Rescue Dawn and The Robocop Special Edition! :D

5 DVDs for 26 bucks...not too shabby :)
