NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Well, I have a sizable rumor about the state of Colby hockey for this upcoming season, but I will refrain from posting it until I have more information. I can say, however, that they may not play this season and that it's unrelated to the current lack of a head coach.

If Colby cancels its season, that will impact the whole league. There may even be monetary penalties. That's a tough call. Not to mention that I might have to get a life this winter.

Don't know about the monetary penalties but it definitely would complicate things for Bowdoin not to have a travel partner and to face a double barrel every weekend while their opponents would be able to focus all their energy on Bowdoin.

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Is there a real chance they will cancel their season? I read the article posted, and unless all of the students involved were hockey players, why would they be the only team punished?

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

So it turns out the rumor, being a rumor, was blown out of proportion. The team is playing from all indications, and were not connected to the party bust. There was an unconnected incident with a few of the players on the night of the party bust, and it seems the two got lumped together.

Word from Waterville tonight has confirmed that Stan Moore is indeed the new coach of Colby!

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Stan Moore has most recently been coaching at Kents Hill School a prep school in Maine. Click here for his collegiate coaching record. Click here for a nice article that covers his whole career.

My guess, likely he isn't interested in it full time - or are currently unable to meet or unsure they want to meet his demands for taking it full-time.

Reasonable assumption for sure that the interim status would be Stan's conditions, rather than the school's.
Under the circumstances I wouldn't think his demands would too excessive. Perhaps an assistant Coach ? Would Colby have full time assistant(s) on the payroll ?
Regardless....Colby will certainly benefit from what Stan has to offer.

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Why "interim" ? ?

Maybe because the process was rushed and truncated and Colby did not have the time to take a serious look at other candidates?? Colby needed someone who could a step into the job immediately as this is the crucial time for nailing down commitments for next year's recruits and practice starts in less than a month.

Doubtful -- the guy is basically an out-of-work college hockey coach who wants to live in the Waterville area (because that's where his wife and children live) and doesn't have a lot of choices if he wants to stay in Maine and return to coaching college hockey.

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Given his situation, I can't imagine a better opportunity for Moore. The Board of Trustees probably has some kind of policy regarding hiring on short notice. If he's a good fit, he most likely will be offered a permanent job after the season. Tough first couple of games, Stan. Best of luck!

Exactly - Due to the impending season, Colby was in a rush so the hiring had to happen through an accelerated and compressed process. If things work out, the admin can make it permanent after the season.

He is only around 56, so retirement isn't likely to soon, and he did move to Maine for the sake of his family. The question is does he WANT to continue coaching full time? That said, his demands for taking it full-time need not be strictly financial, for example, he may want less responsibilities (i.e. the ability to spend the time with his family that he wants to) than the school would like. Given his pedigree and record/accomplishments, I don’t think he would take on a position he didn’t feel he could give 100% to. No doubt, he has much to offer and has the potential to be an asset to ANY division III school.

Oh come on, Norm, Moore took a job at a small prep school in Maine as an assistant coach last year. That hardly sounds like a man who has any interest in leaving his chosen profession. . .
