NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Oh come on, Norm, Moore took a job at a small prep school in Maine as an assistant coach last year. That hardly sounds like a man who has any interest in leaving his chosen professions. . .

Certainly he loves hockey - he DID take an interm position with little notice, but I am not sold that HE is looking for the demands of a Full Time, permenant Head Coaching position. I won't dismiss the possibility that the college feels they can do better, but, that would be arrogance and a slap in the face to Moore (but then again, this is the NESCAC).

It would be kind of foolish for Colby to give the heading coaching job even on an interim basis to a man who was not willing to make the commitment to the demands of a head coaching job.

Ryan Hardy, Assistant Coach Williams College, 2010-2011, left to be the Head Coach of the NAHL Springfield Jr. Blues, but has resigned 29 Sept to pursue college coaching opportunities. Colby?

This story paints a different picture as to the reasons for Hardy's resignation from the NAHL coaching spot.

I saw that without Ryan Hardy's direct response or anonymous sources offering their view of Coach Hardy's side this is hard to figure. He did get a game misconduct the weekend before that the NAHL overturned. He resigned later the following week. Who knows? Just thought a DI Assistant to NESCAC Assistant now pursuing Coaching opportunities and Colby has vacancies...

Not if HE said, I understand and appreciate the situation you are in, and I'm willing do it and give it my best for this year, BUT you will have to find someone else on a permanent basis. His track record warrants the position, IMO – IF he wants it. Unless he is desperate, taking an interim position on someone else’s terms IS foolish. Myself, I would rather pack groceries or be a Wal-Mart greeter than be insulted.

Coach Hardy is back at Sacred Heart where he was before Williams. He'll have to tell you why he left the NAHL. Colby would be wise to teach out to him.

I don't know Hardy at all, so he may very well make an excellent head coach in the NESCAC. However, let's be clear about his background: he was a volunteer assistant for two years at Sacred Heart, and not one of the two full-time assistants out on the road recruiting. Last year at Williams was his first year as a true assistant - which likely explains why he moved to the D3 level from Sacred Heart. Again, he might be wonderful coach, but his resume seems VERY light to be a realistic applicant for a head coaching position in the NESCAC.

I'd have to think that one strong applicant for the trinity job would be Matt Greason, who is an alum, and was an assistant for 2-3 seasons before spending the last couple of years as an assistant with the National U-17 and U-18 program.

And exactly why are you so certain that a middle-age man is ready to pack it in on his chosen profession and spend the rest of his life hanging around Waterville, Maine, as a house husband???

"Packing it in" and taking an interim position on other than his terms are NOT the same. But note: He gave up his position at Providence College because "Over time it became important for me to consider being back at home with my family," said Moore, who has three children ages 12 and under. "I did not want to leave Providence. I didn't want to leave the program, but it was more important to be home with my family. Sometimes you forget what it's like to be a dad. You think you are being a parent but you're actually doing it long distance. It's not good for the kids." AND "Moore says he's a small-town guy who embraces a quieter pace of life."

Stan has TWICE been named Eastern College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (Division I - including his rookie year of 1996-97 while at Union), I can't imagine someone of his caliber taking a DIII position on an INTERIM basis, unless HE wanted it that way. Note, here is an example where I feel he rose to the occassion on an interim basis.

IF, the reason is that his wife is an associate dean and they have rules against hiring spouses, and out of desperation they are making am exception by offering it to him on interim basis, then why not simply say so (as was done in the Colgate situation).

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

Any update from Trinity? I noticed that all the assistant coaching information is now off the website? Are they gone too?

I'm pretty sure there is no such rule. There wasn't when I was a student in the 60s and I believe I have heard of cases of married faculty since then. Hey, it's not that easy to get people to move all the way up to Waterville.

Generally schools prohibit direct or indirect reporting situations - you can't create a situation in which one person is their spouse's supervisor or their spouse's supervisor's supervisor. It becomes a pretty clear problem of conflict of interest. Unless there is a line of command reporting issue, the fact that his wife is an Associate Dean should not be an issue. If his wife were the AD, that would be an issue.

NESCAC coaches are not paid a salary as that would associate them with the "working class". They are paid a "stipend" for the efforts on behalf of the university.

Re: NESCAC Coaching Changes: Colby and Trinity

i though the coaches were paid around 75,000-80,000 a year as a head mens nescac hockey coach.
