NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Not saying you're wrong, but why would their out of conference record have any bearing whatsoever on the Conference tiebreaker rules??? That just seems like a very odd way to determine home ice.

I believe you are correct. I would wager that none of the men's or women's hockey conferences have tie breaking criteria that fall outside of conference play/opponents. NC games definitely effect overall perception of a program and impact national rankings but conference standings, and conference player or coach of the year, etc, are supposed to be based on conference play only, although I'm sure those end of season awards are probably also influenced by a team's / a player's overall stats.

You are correct, and I'm wrong. Obserbear posted the actual rules. Back to the original question: If both Conn and Midd win all their remaining NESCAC games, the tie breaker would be a coin flip.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Very good summary of the weekend.

IMO the big difference between the 2 games was the officiating on Saturday. Conn certainly deserved several of the penalties that were called, but the 14 vs 6 penalty minutes was clearly the difference in the game. In addition, there were 2 separate 5on3's [both over a minute long, the first nearly a full 2 min and with D-man Beattie in the box the entire time... which they somehow killed off].

Skating 5 on 5 Conn is perhaps slightly better than both Midd and Amherst [but all 3 are very close]...the key to their season will be getting the penalties corrected [or perhaps spending some time a the pool working on those swan dives]...seems to be working for some other teams. [just kidding of course] ;)

You mean Mandigo benefited from refs?!!! Shocker. This guy is a joker.

It's not totally unprecedented. Plattsburgh hosted the ECAC-W Championships in 2014 because of a coin toss, after similar tiebreaking procedures.

A lot of hockey left to play before anyone flips a coin. However if there is a flip I'm sure Mandigo supplies the coin.

The '03-'04 season saw both Middlebury and Bowdoin go 15-1 in NESCAC play. There was a coin toss, and I am unclear on who supplied what type of coin, and where the toss occurred, however the Polar Bears won and hosted the NESCACs at Dayton (Middlebury did win the auto bid on the road and eventually went on to win their 1st NCAA DIII title, 2-1 over Wisconsin-Stevens Point).

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

All this Mandigo "the fix is in" stuff... reminds me of what NFL fans say about Belichick.

You can't sustain a long-term record like he has on the backs of officiating. Impossible.

lol...it's certainly possible. especially when you've been coaching for longer than many refs have been alive. Intimidation of officials has been going on since forever, and this joker is a master at it. Just look at the penalty numbers. Pretty obvious. If you don't think so, you must be new here.

Not new by any stretch.

Agree 100%. He is notorious for "working the refs." Biggest whiner in the game. Might even classify as a crybaby. His coaching record is respected. He is not. Nice legacy. Lol.

Jealous? Susie wasn't admitted? What is the deal with the Coach Mandigo hating? He has made tremendous contributions to the women's game. All coaches work the refs. Get over it.

Bear - You are one of the most knowledgeable, respected and unbiased people on this thread. Thank you for your wise and polite response to these Middlebury / Mandigo haters. You are a class act!!

Jealous? Of what? What contributions has Mandigo made to the Women's game that any ordinary person couldn't have done?

He is arrogant, pompous and character is bad! Don't even get me started with the way he handled his daughter on the team. Obserbear you know the stories around that, if you are in fact connected to the Midd team?

If he coached finlandia university, they would not be any better.

I am not connected to Middlebury College. I watch some games they play. I am a fan (as in not a parent...no prep, club or recruiting histories), an observer if you will. My opinion of Coach Mandigo is based on personal experiences of the past 10 or 12 years.

Anyone that truly knows him knows he is all about himself.

To be fair, if the Plattsburgh, Norwich, Elmira, or River Falls coaches were at Finlandia they would all fail miserably too.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

My daughter played 4 years at a NESCAC school. She graduated in 2014. I am an avid reader of this forum, but didn’t think it was my place to comment while my daughter was in school.

My daughter was fortunate enough to have a choice between Middlebury and the NESCAC school she attended. Coach Mandigo was very gracious when she visited Middlebury.
When she choose the other school she called the assistant coach, and sent a note to coach Mandigo thanking him and explaining why she didn’t select Midd.

Just after that Midd was playing a game at our local rink. Before the game she approached coach Mandigo to say hello. He would not recognize her, he refused to shake her hand. My daughter came away in tears.

Three years later in the handshake line at Midd, coach Mandigo accused my daughter of bumping him. Again my daughter was in tears. She called me from the locker room. I suggested she talk to her coach. Her coach’s response was, “that’s just Bill being Bill”.

I greatly respect the opinions expressed here, especially that of Obear. I recognize coach Mandigo’s on ice record and his contribution to women’s hockey.

Unfortunately, in my book coach Mandigo is a first-class jerk.

I think your experience is more the norm than the exception.

With all due respect to Obserbear, who is a true fan of the d3 game [actually perhaps more 'nut' than fan, I mean, who drives hours and hours through the snow to watch d3 women's games at Midd or anywhere else-- when you have no connection to the team??]...However, on this topic he's just plain off base.

[actually perhaps more 'nut' than fan, I mean, who drives hours and hours through the snow to watch d3 women's games at Midd or anywhere else-- when you have no connection to the team??]...

Roughly evenly split between D3 Men's and Women's Hockey, I'm possibly going to attend as many as 55-60 games this season, and I've calculated that it could (depending on the location of the Women's Championship) approach the 5,000 mile mark on round-trip driving by season's end. I wear the title of D3 Hockey "Nut" proudly. Don't you dare imply that oserbear's love for the game is a negative! ;)

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Tonight's parley: Bowdoin at home over U of New England; Oswego over Hamilton; Endicott over Wesleyan and Amherst to bounce back (Kreitzberg has not been a kind place for the P&W) over Manhattanville
