NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Great way to start the NESCAC viewing season watching Middlebury defeat Trinity 2-1 in overtime! Terrific goal play at both ends in a game featuring wide swings in flow and momentum. More thoughts by morning.

Equally impressive game at the Orr...Conn College Camels take down #6 Amherst 1-0. Goaltending [as expected with these two] was very good.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

I did not see a pre-season NESCAC coaches poll, but Trinity looks to be in the mix at the top. The Bantams came out flying and outshot the visiting Middlebury Panthers 10-4 in the 1st period. Trinity took the lead grinding the puck out of the right wing corner and from low in the right circle feeding to the top of the crease for a point blank by White (I think I have this sequence correct); Panther goalie Neuberger made the initial stop and smothered a put back by Maffeo, but Oganeku slid the puck under and in. Late in the period Neuberger came up with a big stick save on Maffeo who got in her grill off a 2x1 Bantam break in. The Panthers got some offensive pressure going midway in the 2nd. Bantam goalie Thulin (a rare NESCAC transfer from Colby) stoned Sheline on a Panther rush about 8:50. Middlebury tied the score soon after. Marmer moved the puck up the right side to Portner; she sprung Hlinka with a pass across the neutral zone; Hlinka moved in from left wing to the slot and her forehand was up gloveside. Thulin made the grab only to have the puck leak into the net. Thulin made a nifty stop with the Bantams on a powerplay late in the 2nd. Marotta picked a D pocket at the blueline and was able to set up Young for an open blast from the slot, but Thulin made the stop. The 3rd saw Neuberger and Thulin continue their duel save for save, although the period saw increasing Panther offensive zone time. The OT caused concern for the Panthers when Young was felled by a Watson slapper and limped off ice. She was back on 2 minutes later and again took a shot, albeit with a happy result. Laven scooped up the puck of the half boards on left point, had some space, walked in for a shot that deflected off Young and was in up to Thulin's gloveside.
Rematch today at 4 is worth the drive back up to Koeppel!

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

I am watching out for those Camels...and have been...for years...Seriously, looking forward to Middlebury visiting the friendly confines of Dayton in early December for 2 with the Camels!
Anyway, not a good start to non-conference/Thanksgiving week with only Wesleyan (4-3 over Salve Regina) winning Tuesday, as Colby (2-1 to Southern Maine) and Hamilton (2-0 to Morrisville State) lost. Exciting action awaits:
Saturday
Holy Cross@Bowdoin-HC
Buffalo State@Trinity-Bantams
Oswego State@Williams-Oswego
Utica@Middlebury in the Panther/Cardinal-Panthers
Sunday
Wesleyan@Holy Cross-HC
Buffalo State@Trinity-sweep for the Bantams
Oswego State@Williams-Ephs bounce back
Panthers to win it on Sunday!

Camels appear to be a much different [better] team...started last year when they started sweeping NESCAC opponents for the first time...and it's continuing this year. should be an interesting weekend with Midd coming to Dayton Arena on Friday night. May go a long way in determining the seedings.

Polar Bears dress 14 skaters and ride goalie St. Denis 33 saves to a 3-1 win despite being outshot 34-16. The Panthers took care of Utica 5-1 and advance to face Plattsburgh tomorrow in the Panther/Cardinal championship. Other NESCACs failed non-conference matchups: UMass-Boston 7-2 over Colby, Oswego 7-2 over Williams and Buffalo State 3-1 over Trinity.

Great pickup by Bowdoin on getting Mercyhurst transfer St. Denis. Did a bit of research on her, played at St. Pauls and for Assabet, both strong hockey programs. Early on still, but St. Denis could be a name we hear quite a lot thwarting high octane offenses like Holy Cross. 33 saves against a team that hasnt been held to score less than 3 goals prior to this game. Holy cross had scored 33 goals in 7 games an average of 4.7 goals a game up until yesterday where they were only able to pop one in on her. Bowdoin players will become more comfortable with her back there and will be able to put up goals like they did against HC. Stingy goalies and confident Fwds make for a solid group!

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

LOL ok dad.

HC has a "high octane offense"...because they've played scrubs.. You may want to do some more research...St. Dennis was "D1"......if that means playing a grand total of ONE game and giving up 6 goals....And I won't even mention how tough it is to play goalie for AssabetOh, and Playing goalie for Assabet...please...get your rocking chair.

They only dressed 14 skaters???

Also noticed that last year's leading scorer, Miranda Bell, nescac player of the year, is not listed on the roster?? This after last year their best returning player, Rachel Kennedy opted not to play her Senior year? What's the story at Bowdoin??

Holy Cross has basically been a 3 goal a game team if you remove the NE College shellacking and their competition has been weak. St. Denis played at St Paul's when they had 5 or 6 future D1 players on their roster. She was solid but not outstanding. I was always surprised she was signed so early by Mercyhurst and am not surprised there are better goalies there. That being said, she should be a good D3 goalie, especially after practicing at the D1 level for a season. She definitely can help Bowdoin there who have struggled in goal the last 3-4 seasons.

Rachel Kennedy was as good (maybe better) field hockey player as she was an ice hockey player. Last year, she (and another Bowdoin classmate) were selected for the USA's Maccabeiah field hockey team. I believe that she elected the Maccabeiah games over ice hockey (the Maccabeiah gams coincided with the ice hockey season).

The small roster has been a persistent problem at Bowdoin for several seasons -- It would seem to be a product of injuries and poor recruiting . . On the recruiting front, this year's class of new players is very small (4 FYs and 1 soph transfer) when it should have been large after last year's small roster . .

Could there being more programs to choose from, plus Bowdoin's high cost of attendance ($61k a year according to my search) be the crux of their recruiting problems? Add in the weakening Canadian dollar and the player pool is getting spread very thin.

Doubtful...since they compete in the nescac and all of those schools are basically the same crazy $$$$ price...and if anything, their huge endowment would give them a big edge in financial aid awards. They also should have a HUGE recruiting advantage with the best rink in ALL of D3. My guess is the problem is either in Admissions Dept or [since that school is pretty competitive in all but football] more likely behind the bench.

No -- Bowdoin's financial aid is "need blind" and loan free. In the NESCAC, only Williams and Amherst are wealthier than Bowdoin. To put things in perspective, the Bowdoin's men's hockey team has 35 members . .

From personal experience the recruiting problem at Bowdoin is generally behind the bench (and Brunswick is not the most attractive location).

You can nix "location" as the explanation since the Bowdoin's men's program has no trouble attracting high-quality recruits to Brunswick and almost always has a larger squad than any other NESCAC (35 on the Bowdoin's men's team versus 24 on the Amherst men's team).

If anyone thinks location is the problem they are crazy. Maine is a beautiful place, especially when your campus is 5 min from the ocean. Having been to every nescac campus several times, I would rate Bowdoin's campus and the town #1 or #2 in the Conf.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Once upon a time, back when they played in Dayton (which I miss for the nostalgia factor), the Polar Bears had a storied and successful women's program (and I appreciate it as a different era of play when paths to success may have been different). The first 4 seasons of DIII NCAA play saw the teams go 86-17-6 and reach the NCAA quarter final all 4 seasons. Time passed and Bowdoin then spent $20,000,000 or so to build Watson Arena. The '12-'13 women's team went 21-5-2 and hosted an NCAA quarter final (which saw a disastrous loss to eventual champion Elmira). A quick scan of numbers puts the team at 93-86-21 during the Watson seasons (merely 82-81-19 without including '12-'13). So we have a team with a successful pedigree, in a gorgeous place, supported by need blind admissions and an endowment enabling a guarantee to fully fund demonstrated financial need, yet the team was 8-14-2 last season and begins the new campaign dressing 14 skaters for the third game of the year???

Must be that terrible location. LOL
