NESCAC 2016-2017 season

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

If anyone thinks location is the problem they are crazy. Maine is a beautiful place, especially when your campus is 5 min from the ocean. Having been to every nescac campus several times, I would rate Bowdoin's campus and the town #1 or #2 in the Conf.

Coach recruiting is the primary problem as I said, but agree to disagree on location/campus. Maine is a beautiful place, but the Bowdoin campus is not what I would call picturesque (more like functional), especially with the tall concrete high rise at the one end of campus - try it in the rain some day (which is a lot of the time in Brunswick). Great rink though (some would argue Middlebury is better). As for NESCAC campuses, give me Amherst, Middlebury, Williams, Colby, or Hamilton over Bowdoin anytime.

What do we think are the worst NESCAC campuses - Wesleyan? Trinity? Conn College is in the middle I think.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

For tonight's game we have the 0-8-1 Salve Regina Sea Hawks visiting the 2-0 Connecticut College Camels

And 5 minutes in it is 1-0 Conn college, with them dominating the play time.

Camels score again on the power play, and thus ends the first period.

Salve scores two quick goals in the middle of the second to make the score 2-2. I missed the first one due to the camera being pointed at the ceiling, the second was sloppy defense of not clearing the puck from the front of the net.

Two minutes later the camels score on the Power play to make it 3-2. Thus ends the second period.

That's strictly your sense of aesthetics as I would place Bowdoin at or near the top, especially in terms of its rather perfect quad, with a great balance of architectural styles. I also like the Amherst campus, with its great hilltop location and overlook, but do not like the way the Williams campus is split by a major roadway and find the granite look of the Middlebury campus foreboding and gloomy (but love the settings for both Williams and Middlebury). The uniform 1950s neo-Georgian look of the Colby and its obvious lack of history do not do much for me. The Hamilton campus looks very pretty in photos but have not been there . . In other words, to each his own as to which campus is the nicest and most attractive.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

The camels score one more in the third and the game ends 4-2 for the camels.

I was interested in this game because of the two victories for the camels over Amherst last weekend. And their next weekend tilts against Middlebury.

Conn plays what I think of as the typical NESCAC style. Quick, lots of passing, physical when they need to be. They were faster and more physical than Salve Regina, and along with their better forchecking managed to dominate the game. As the game went on the Sea Hawks got legs under them and made better efforts.

I will be interested to see how this weekend goes.

Shots were something like 48-14 for the Camels...seems like a blowout but for the goaltending...

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

good overview of campus....Just on "looks" I'd go bottom up as follows:

Bates [just uggg]
Colby [too new, and Colby HS comes to mind]
Trinity [awful location]
Wesleyan [just not good, and town isn't much]
Middleburg [nice setting, buildings would make nice prison]
Tufts [mehh]
Hamilton [very well thought out campus...town is not great]
Williams [town is great, beautiful setting]
Amherst [beautiful town, nice campus]
Conn [rink is terrible, but a beautiful setting on the LI sound]
Bowdoin [classic campus, great rink, nice town, Rocky coast of Maine a 5min drive away]

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

It's now or never for Conn this weekend. Really interesting if Conn and Trinity could pull off sweeps.

It's only the 2nd weekend of Conf play so "now or never" is a bit drastic IMO...That said, it will be interesting to see what the weekend brings for Conn and Trinity... My guess is both series will feature two low scoring games...would not be surprised to see several ties.

It may be early, but a Camel sweep puts them in the drivers seat to be the top seed in the NESCAC playoffs.
Tonight I'll go with Amherst bouncing back at home against Trinity, Hamilton getting off the bus and beating Colby and a Panther-Camel tie at Dayton.

Re: NESCAC 2016-2017 season

The highly anticipated early season match up between Middlebury and Connecticut College was a bit of an anticlimax as the Camels banged home 3 1st period goals and were backstopped by Chester making 36 of 37 saves on the night.
The scoring opened somewhat improbably when Camel captain Beattie launched what was doubtless intended as a line change dump in; her blast from outside the red line eluded Panther goalie Neuberger over her right shoulder. Conn extended the lead 6 minutes later. Midd was breaking out on their left wing up the half boards. The play was pinched off and the puck went back into the corner. Cross dug the puck out and advanced on net for a shot that was turned away by Neuberger but Bleck grabbed the rebound and put a backhand in up to Neuberger's gloveside. The Camel forecheck produced a 3rd goal when Floresca was grinding the puck out of the right corner, moving behind the net and got the puck to the net from Neuberger's stickside; Paiva's putback beneath Neuberger made it 3-0. Chester frustrated the Panthers throughout the evening. At 10:21 of the 2nd Chester robbed Young with a nifty shortside glove on an open look from the low edge of the right faceoff circle. Middlebury made it 3-1 late in the period scoring shorthanded. Winslow chipped the puck past a Conn D and streaked in on Chester from right wing; Chester made the left pad save on Winslow only to have Young follow up and ram the puck home. The 3rd saw Middlebury pressing and Coach Mandigo got goalie Han off for the extra attacker with 1:40 to play, but Chester and the Conn D made the lead stand up.
Rematch tomorrow at 3

Anyone watch the second Middlebury Connecticut College game? Saw the score but wasn't able to catch the game

Saturday's game did not begin well for Middlebury with Conn scoring a powerplay goal at 3:52 of the 1st. Paiva was digging in the right corner, Igo got the puck to the gloveside of Panther goalie Kan's crease and Floresca jammed the puck home from the top of the crease. I am sure thoughts of the 1st Friday crossed Panther parent thoughts. Camel goalie Chester was not helping either, as she continued her stellar early season work, stoning a Midd 2x1 and Sherman from the slot with Wulf lurking to her stickside at 16:02. Conn closed the period with heavy pressure on the Panther goal, with Kan active in net poke stick checking several inside passes. The 2nd saw both goalies standing fast. Chester robbed Winslow at 13: and Han was tested, making a blocker stop on a drive from the slot minutes later. The Panthers ground out the tying goal when Sheline worked the puck in the right corner, Wulf found some space and moved left into the slot, her shot handcuffed Chester enabling Young to swoop in from the stickside of the crease, putting the puck in up glovside. The 3rd provided Middlebury with a 5x3 opportunity and the Panthers cashed in the winning goal. Following a face off in the left circle, Winslow came off the half boards and fed across to Young at right point; Young sent the puck to Watson on left point; Watson walked the puck right and her low slap shot got on net and was in. Young skated away for an insurance empty net goal as Hlinka grabbed the puck and broke Young through the neutral zone and in free ahead of the D for a tap in.
My impression is I was rewarded with the hockey I hoped to see this weekend. Conn College is legit. They play a grind and grind style and were particularly effortless in breaking out of their D zone. Chester has opened the season going 119/123 in 4 games against Amherst and Middlebury: having seen her this weekend she may be that good. The Camels need to stay calm and focused and win. They did that Friday night; I thought you could see a small return to the ways of past seasons during the 3rd period Saturday (particularly the penalty resulting in the second penalty of the Midd 5x3 leading to the Watson goal). Conn looks well balanced and will beat lots of teams in a variety of ways. That said, their strength of schedule will probably prevent them from receiving anything but the NESCAC autobid.
Middlebury is improved this season and showed they are ready to skate with anyone at the Panther/Cardinal. Their first years have some size and have made early season contributions. The Panthers showed some grit falling behind and coming back to win Saturday. Their win Saturday means the race for the regular season NESCAC title will wind on into the new year (a Conn win and the 2-0 record against both Amherst and Middlebury would have been a lead no team was likely to overtake) and, with a successful season, the Panthers will be in the hunt for a Pool "C" bid should the NESCAC bid elude them.

Very good summary of the weekend.

IMO the big difference between the 2 games was the officiating on Saturday. Conn certainly deserved several of the penalties that were called, but the 14 vs 6 penalty minutes was clearly the difference in the game. In addition, there were 2 separate 5on3's [both over a minute long, the first nearly a full 2 min and with D-man Beattie in the box the entire time... which they somehow killed off].

Skating 5 on 5 Conn is perhaps slightly better than both Midd and Amherst [but all 3 are very close]...the key to their season will be getting the penalties corrected [or perhaps spending some time a the pool working on those swan dives]...seems to be working for some other teams. [just kidding of course] ;)

If Conn and Midd are able to win the remainder of there NESCAC games. Who would be conference champ? Would Midd's OT's vs Trinity play any role in deciding who gets home ice?

NESCAC tie breakers I think then refer to record against the team finishing 3rd in regular season, and if records are identical, against the 4th finisher. There is a point (as once happened to Polar Bears and Panthers, back in the day) when things go to a coin toss to determine the #1 seed.

Ask again after the January 6-7th weekend of games. Here Conn is playing Trinity at Trinity, and Midd play Amherst at home. This will be a pretty definitive setup for the rankings of the NESCAC.

To answer your question, I believe one of the critera for determining home ice is the overall record against all opponents. Midd still has games against Elmira, Norwich, and Plattsburg (again), and the one loss to Platy. I would be ecstatic, but have no illusions of Midd sweeping all these teams.

But, assuming both teams win all their remaining games (in and out of conference), Conn takes the title based upon overall record.

Not saying you're wrong, but why would their out of conference record have any bearing whatsoever on the Conference tiebreaker rules??? That just seems like a very odd way to determine home ice.
