Season is officially about a month away though most teams will be taking to the ice soon. Some teams are completely reloading while perennial favorite Middlebury is losing only 4 players to graduation.

Bowdoin: Finished 09-10 with a 19-7-1 record. Beat Colby in the NESCAC quaterfinal and Hamilton in the Semi's. Lost to Middlebury in the Finals and were dominated by Oswego in the NCAA quarters. They lead the league in goals scored with 116 and gave up 72. The powerplay was fourth in the league with a 21.4% success rate and the penalty kill was fifth killing almost 85%. Goaltending overall had a solid save% of 90.1%.

Bowdoin lost 9 players to graduation including their top G, three forwards who put up 25 points, 21 points and 15 points, as well as a D who put up 13 points.
D3 recruits lists 2 incoming forwards from prep: Nick Raffone, 5.9" 165lb from N&G, and Daniel Hanley from Falmouth HS who put up 19G and 19A in 20 games. In addition 2 forwards with EJHL experience join the roster: Colin Downey, 5'10" 175lb from Jr. Bruins who scored 19G, 23A in 45 games and speedster Oliver Koo, 5'10", 170lb from Apple Core with 14G, 17A in 36 games. The team is adding two goalies, Bobby Kaminski and Steve Messina.

If Bowdoin's goal production can be maintained and they find an answer to a key loss in goal, they should return as a power this year.

Middlebury Repeats??

Middlebury was second in the league for scoring last year averaging almost 4 goals a game and giving up 2.3. The NESCAC champions lost in the NCAA quarters in overtime to Plattsburgh and return a solid core of D and forwards as well as #1 G Yanchek with a .915% save average.

Middlebury returns a potent PP that was second in the league as well as there well coached PK that was third in the league. Only four players are lost to graduation including two forwards (Sullivan was #4 in points), one D and one G.

Six incoming freshman will compete to crack the lineup including F Mike Longo and D Tom Pesce from Delbarton Prep in NJ. Delbarton is the perenial NJ champion having produced the VanReimsdyk brothers. Taft grad John Barr will join the D as well as forwards Darric White from Fairfield and Jean-Daniel Vermette of VT Academy and Choate goalie Nick BonDurant.

Middlebury has to be the favorite to repeat.

Amherst Looking to Advance.

The Lord Jeffs finished fourth in the NESCAC and had their season end in the conference quaterfinals losing to Trinity in overtime. Amherst only produced 84 goals last season but was stingy on the defensive side yielding a league leading 44 goals against.

Losing four players to graduation that includes #4 scorer Keith Nelson, 2 additional forwards and a D, Amherst is adding age, size and experience in their recruits. Forwards Erik Hansen, Ryan Edwards, and Andrew Kurlandski played in the EJHL last year with the big 6'1" 190lb Kurlandski putting up 45 pts, 33pim in 45 games. 6'2" Elliott Bostrom on D was ranked #105 by central scouting. Goalie John Russell from Breck and forward Andrew Fenwick from Northwood should improved the squad.

Well coached, specialty teams and defense were their trademark last year. The Lord Jeffs led the league in powerplay and penalty kill and their goaltending led in save percentage. If scoring can be added, Amherst could vault to the top in the league.

Colby is looking to recruiting to help a squad that is losing 9 players to graduation. Last years 11-9-4 record to Colby to the Nescac quarters where they lost to Bowdoin in OT. Their top 7 scorers return but help at the blueline is needed as the 4 graduating D played significant minutes. Colby put up the 3rd fewest points in the Nescac last year and was second to last in penalty kill.

5 D recruits and 5 F recruits will join the Mules. On Dm Scott Harff, a 6'3" transfer from Brown will be joined by 6.2" Anthony Raymond from the Soo Eagles, 6'1" Tom Kader from the Valley Warriors (EJHL), 6'1" Brendan Cosgrove from Exeter and 5'11" Nick Trepp from Brunswick. Size will not be an issue.

The forwards all come from prep and include Jack Bartlett (BBN), Nick Lanza (Westminster), Ben Chwick (Berkshire), Sam Courcelles (St. Paul) and Mat Gelnaw (Delbarton).

Colby will need to shore up its D, specialty teams and look for recruits to increase its offensive output.

But they had a competent goaltender who will be back as a senior that kept them in a lot of games.

Colby did have solid goaltending with Mckinney and Lemonias both averaging over a .914 save percentage. Both returning juniors faced a fair number of shots and should provide capable backstop for the D.

Connecticut College....can they get over the hump?:cool:

The Camels have posted one winning season since 2000 and this year they hope to improve upon last years 8-15-1 record. Top scoring defensemen Ryan Joyce who was second on the team in scoring has graduated along with top goaltender Greg Parker who sported a .911 save percentage. The goalies faced over 34 shots a game and Junior Andrew Margolin will face the majority of these this year. Four forwards also graduated.

Eight freshmen will look to strengthen the core including Dmen Kevin Reich from Apple Core (EJHL) and 6'4" Adam Rimmer from Pomfret. 5 Forwards look to add to the scoring with keith Veronesi (6'2") from Berkshire, Stephen Servideo (Canterbury), PJ McCadden (45pts Williston northampton) his teammate Kevin Kelly and Will Einstein from Taft. Mike Petchonka also from Taft will compete between the pipes.

Special teams and offense will need to be a focus as CC posted only a 13% success rate on the powerplay. The team scored a league low 59 goals last year.

Kaminski is not a definite addition to Bowdoin, however he will try out for the team. Messina broke and set a number of records in his two seasons at The Hill School.

Don't see why Kaminski wouldn't make the team since two goalies graduated and Bowdoin usually carries four goalies . .

Hamilton Continues Progress:

The Continentals posted their first winning season since 2003 last year in Coach Bazin's second season that garnered him coach of the year status. Hamilton lost to Bowdoin in the Nescac Semifinals. They graduated their top scorer as well as four other forwards and their #3 goalie. The team had 3 >20pt scorers and only scored 94 goals. The goaltenders save% was .890 with #1 G posting a .909. PP and PK were average for the league with a .215 and .802 respectively and the team gave up 844 shots, 3rd worst in the league. Statistically Hamilton was in the middle of the pack but the team learned to win.

The Continentals have recruited significant scoring potential, size, speed, and experience. This years recruiting class includes only one non-junior player, Dman Andrew Morrison from Upper Canada College. He is joined on D by 6'3" 205lb Bennett Schneider (NH Monarchs EJHL). Also from the EJHL is 5'9" 171lb forward Mike DeMare (66pts in 43 gms). F, Nick Anderson (BCHL, 6'1" 190lb) scored 50pts in 54 gms, Evan Haney, a 6-2" 200lb, Hamilton Redwings OJHL (38pts in 50gms) and Thomas Williams, Notre Dame Hounds SJHL, 5'10" 38pt scorer also join the squad.

Hamilton looks to move up to the front of the class with what may be the best recruiting class in the NESCAC.

Trinity Remains Strong

The Bantams finished with a 15-9-2 record last year led by strong goaltending and a solid PK. The squad returns its top 2 scorers and its #1 goalie. Though strong in the win loss column, the team struggled to put up points as they only scored 83 goals last year. Only one player had >20pts and the team gave up 881 shots, second most in the league.

This years recruits include 6'1" 198lb forward Charlie Mullan from EJHL league champion Monarchs, Forward Nick Tierney from Belmont Hill, Dman Larry Bero 6'3" 185lb Bandits EJHL and Goalie Ben Coulthard from Green Mt. EJHL who put up excellent .911 save % on a weaker EJ team.

Jumbos Recruiting Jr. Ranks

Tufts graduated 8 players from the 09-10 squad that finished 12-10-3. The highest scoring graduate put up 7pts and this makes room for a large recruiting class. Nine recruits, of which six are forwards, 2 D, and big G Brian Phillips 6'4" who has NAHL and EJHl experience, make up the incoming freshman. Five have junior experience in the EJHL and NAHL. Forward Garrett Sider amassed 71pts in 24 prep games at St. Georges and should have a significant impact.

The Jumbos were led by .939 save % league leader Scott Barchard between the pipes. Four Tufts players put up over 20pts and returning senior Tom Darosa put up 31pts. Offensive defensman freshman Trevor John (Motor City NAHL) led the D with 20pts. However the Jumbos led the league in shots allowed with 1100. Thats over 220 more than the next most. The elite D3 teams usually allow 600-750. Goaltending saved Tufts last year and the team performs well on the PP and PK. However they need to add to their offensive output as they scored only 81 goals last year and 30 were on PP.

NESCAC teams have been on the ice since Monday ( officially ) . With 4 teams in the early rankings Midd, Bowdoin, Williams, Amherst, it will be interesting to see to see who will develop and who will fade. Hamilton seems poised to make a mark, goaltending being the question.

One would be hard pressed to find a more competitive division in Dlll. Seemingly anyone of 5 or 6 teams have a legit shot at winning the league. Midd, Williams, Amherst with outstanding veteran goaltending in Yanchek, Purdy, Anderson respectively. Trinity with Vesperini who proved he can steal it when Trinity won a couple of years ago and made the NCAA quarters. Bachand at Tufts with a .938 and the most saves in the league on a team that improved. Hamilton building with a great recruiting class and solid veterans.
Amherst and Midd tied with best special teams. That might not change with Amherst's league leading D offence returning all but one. Midd returning three of the top ten scores in the league. Bowdoin with 2 in Shearer and Weiniger. All in all shapes up as a dogfight.

Wesleyan roster has more Prep players than any NCAA Dl or Dlll team I have ever seen. I don"t think there is a junior hockey player in the line up. Nor a Canadian.

No Canadians but I spot a junior hockey player or two on the list.

I'm very intrigued to see how the two kids from Proctor do.

Both of them put up mega points for their prep school and I'm interested to see how they'll translate over to the D-III game.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it down the weekend Norwich plays at Wesleyan.
