Nescac 2009/2010

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Was wondering how long it would take before that got out. I believe he had returned to Amherst in late August and left about 3 to 4 weeks ago. A fine young man, a straight arrow and a dedicated outstanding tender. The reason was neither academic or disciplinary. Before Amherst the Edmonton Oilers invited him to camp, hopefully a team or school will see the potential and reach out.

That's too bad - I hope he finds a spot somewhere. It will be interesting to see whether Cole Anderson can duplicate last year's performance when he has to play both games most weekends. I would guess yes but the rotating system did work so well last year for Amherst . .

Middlebury roster is posted (collegehockeystats). 13 first-year players (50% of roster)...a number of changes!

I didn't see Chaz Svoboda on the roster for this year. In my opinion he was one of the go-to guys on the Middlebury team and always seemed to cause damage when Middlebury and Norwich played. I know the team lost Jamie McKenna to graduation so Middlebury will have make up for some lost stats from last year. Can not wait to see how they handle the teams in the Primelink. With all the freshmen on Plattsburgh, Middlebury, and Norwich how the Primelink shakes out is anyone's guess. I can not see a clear favorite now. All the regular Primelink teams have freshmen goalies who could play a big role in the tournament.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

chazz svoboda was let go by coach beanie recently and will apparently be playin for the JV team at middlebury. Rather unfortunate for midd as he is a talented player who can cause havoc for opposing teams if he is used in the right circumstances. To bad beanie never really figured out how to use him properly.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

The other Midd d-man who has disappeared form the roster is Michael Kretschmer, who was also a major contributor.

Just curious but could someone spell out Svoboda's deficiencies to me. I only see 3-4 Middlebury games a year but I recall when the game was on the line Svoboda's was always on the ice. To see him not on the team and still at Middlebury is shocking.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

If he was aware he would be cut before the school year started I doubt he would "still be at Middlebury" What do you do deep into the semester and to late to transfer for the winter semester? You stay and finish the year, play some JV and see what next year brings.
As to deficiencies, Charlie has never been a defensive Dman. Does it outweigh the fact that he is one of the most talented offensive Dmen in Dlll? Could he have played Dl somewhere with the right coach? I believe so.( Charlie is a very effective power play guy) That said one would have to think it is more personality with Beaney than a hockey issue. Kozaria, Svoboda...maybe Kretchmer...all could have played for any Dlll team in the country.
Seems if you do not fit the Beaney mould you are gone. About the coach at Midd...not the players.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

As a Middlebury fan, there must be another side to the story in both instances. I think Beaney is a good leader but like some other DIII coaches he has been in his position a long time. He may need to look at things a little differently, but again I give him the benefit of the doubt. The best coaches are the ones who can consistently put the best players on the ice and have them function as a well oiled unit. Beaney has done that consistently, Meagher has not, Kangas, and Torterella have not, that's why they never have been able to win it all. The new coaches will challenge the established coaches at some point and may force them to change. Coaching young men at this level is very difficult, many of the coaches need to realize it's not about them it's about the team, and they are not the team. I can't wait for the season to get started!

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

A NESCAC coach I respect said to me " At Dlll we are not in the business of developing hockey players, we are or should be developing young men." Based on recent and past events the above quote is a credo that some coaches (irregardless of their win /loss record ) may have forgotten or never have got.
Is what it is, I doubt anything will change. Unfortunate for the young men involved.

Or...for all any of us know......... it was the judicious application of this credo that led to the actions noted.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Willie's got it right. Beaney's been doing this for years, and for all the RIGHT reasons. Building character in young men has always been his bottom line. Not winning. He does it as well as any coach I've ever seen. He's more than willing to sacrifice W's to teach important life lessons. Ask those that have played for him. They might not realize the lesson at the time - but usually "get it" later. The comment that implies that Beaney somehow thinks this is about him is laughable. It has always been about the players, and their accountablity to each other - not about the Coach. You see symbolic evidence of this by looking at the recent National Championship photos-Beaney's not in any one of them. His goal by the end of the season is to always establish the right atmosphere so that the players "own" the team, not the coaches. These types of personnel decisions all lead-up to that final goal. Some teams have been more successful than others at it.

I agree with your Beaney comments, he does it better than most, but even as someone who thinks he does it well overall, his ego can get in the way, but I give him the benefit of the doubt, he's earned it

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

NESCAC fans are now agreeing on agreeing. The new ways of ankle grabbing this bunch is capable of coming up with amaze me. The only thing you guys probably ever disagree on is who's turn it is to bend over. As far as Beaney goes can you guys please stop acting like he is some saint? Its so self aggrandizing that its comical but probably not as funny as it is that you people dont even realize it.
I'm glad trix waited two years before posting just to finally chime in with some Beaneyslurp. Its so typical.
Earth to maple syrup base alpha. Beaney is not some rare case. There are a lot of coaches who take an active role in character building and the development of young men. Both of my sons coaches were very positive influences on my boys and there is no doubt they made them better people. this might surprise you but you dont need a sweater vest, tan slacks, a bad haircut, and a $3 pair of loafers to pull that off. You only need to have an interest in playing a positive role and a lot of coaches do. Your savior isn't some exception to that so come off it.

Im sure none of that will sink it so you can now resume your Beaney Christ hour.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Just putting in my two cents based on my experience with the Midd program and others I've been associated with. Nothing more, nothing less.
