Nescac 2009/2010

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

I can tell you that the assistant coach at Williams is a fine young man!!

I will be attending the Saturday Hamilton @ Williams game.

On an amusing side note I may just be a closet Norwich fan.
Both Williams and AIC have Norwich grads as Assistant coaches.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

I think that three of the match-ups this weekend can be viewed as toss-ups.

Bowdoin may be the number one seed but Colby is a talented and well-coached team, who is capable of beating any NESCAC squad in a single elimination format. It's ironic that the top seed got such a difficult game in the quarterfinals. The rivalry between Bowdoin and Colby is old and, to say the least, intense. It should be an memorable game.

The game between Amherst and Trinity should be a dandy, with both teams so close in talent. Williams appears on paper to have more talent than Hamilton, but the Hamilton program has been improving steadily and the playoffs could be a great opportunity for the Continentals to show that they are capable of moving back into the NESCAC elite.

The only boring match-up appears to be Middlebury versus Tufts. Realistically, the chances for Tufts to beat Middlebury at Middlebury should be put at close to 0%. The difference in talent level is huge and Middlebury rarely loses games it's supposed to win.

PSA: If you are planning on attending this game and don't have a ticket yet, you better hurry up. I talked to someone in the athletic department at Bowdoin and they anticipate selling out today or tomorrow. I believe Colby is bussing a lot of students down as well. Should be an awesome atmosphere at The Sid!

You Norwich fans, everything has to be about you:p

On another note, here is an interview with Coach Meagher about the game this weekend:

Thanks for the link. No grilled cheese sandwiches this time, eh.

I'm assuming Bowdoin will be webcasting video of the game. I hope so. I've already told my wife, life goes on hold for a couple hours at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

I didn't mean to be disrespectful to Tufts, their players, coaches and excellent goaltender, and maybe "boring" was the wrong choice of words. Nevertheless, this game, at least on paper, isn't likely to be as closely contested as the other three. For the past couple of decades Middlebury has set the standard of excellence in NESCAC. I may be wrong, but as far as I can remember, the last time Middlebury lost a quarterfinal game at home was in 1993, when a young Bowdoin squad, still maturing during the regular season, peaked at the right time and defeated Middlebury 1-0, on its way to an ECAC East championship. That Bowdoin team included eventual three-time All-America Charlie Gaffney and two-time All-America Paul Croteau, in addition to great forwards Marcello Gentile and Joe Gaffney, all sophomores.

I'm very proud of Chris Rossi and the Polar Bears tonight for the incredible game and win but hats off to the Mules and especially to Cody McKinney for bringing everything they had tonight. College hockey at its finest . .

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Bowdoin 2 - Colby 1 in OT!

What a magnificent hockey game between two skilled, well-coached teams with excellent goaltending! It's a shame one team had to lose. I have nothing but respect for the Colby White Mules.

As I'd predicted, all the games, with the exception of Middlebury/Tufts, were tightly contested affairs, with the fifth (Trinity) and sixth (Hamilton) seeds advancing to the semifinals, and the top seed (Bowdoin) having its hands full with a very good Colby squad. Curiously, the score of these three games was identical: 2-1 in overtime.

The first NESCAC Final Four at the Watson Arena promises to be a terrific tournament. Middlebury vs. Trinity should be a beauty. It'll also be great to renew the Bowdoin/ Hamilton rivalry. The Polar Bears and the Continentals have met numerous times in the playoffs over the last thirty-five years, going back to the 1975 ECAC title game, which Bowdoin won. More recently Hamilton has had the upper hand.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Back from Williams.

Hamilton played Williams hard. They gave up a few high quality chances early, but weather the storm, and stifled Williams at times. Williams had about 4 quality chances in the first two periods including a solid post, missed empty net. Williams really didn't give Hamilton many offensive chances other than when Hamilton was on the power play.
Williams scored their only goal with a pass from behind the net and Hamilton scored their only goal of regulation through a screen in front, from the blue line.
Williams also hit a post late in the game. Other than that, there were not many scoring chances at all in the 3rd, and both defenses didn't allow much to happen.
I have to say I was disappointed with Williams philosophy in OT. They started 30 second shifts, instead of taking advantage of rushes down the ice. The first two shifts were dump ins 30 seconds into the shifts by offensive players. It seemed too tentative, like they were expecting a long drawn out OT. Hamilton put the puck on the net and the puck went off of a William's defender's skate and into the net. I believe Purdy made a save on the shot first before the puck ricocheted into the net.

mckinney was out of his mind good tonight...

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Well, well, well, Rossi is the best goalie in the neacac. That was established tonight. And hardy is the best player in d3. Easily...

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Based on what criteria? The traditional stats are GA and Save % .... Win % ( 13 games played ) which is the only goal tending stat Rossi leads the NESCAC in, is more reflective of team performance. No doubt he had a good year....that said your statement somewhat hyperbolic. As to Kyle Hardy being the best in the NESCAC...a case could be made.

Colby - Bowdoin: Possibly the best hockey game I have ever seen. Has there ever been a game that so lived up to it's billing? Fans of both teams have something in common - a share in one of the great rivalries in sports. Congratulations and good luck to Bowdoin the rest of the way. And congratulations to the Bowdoin sportscasters on the Webcast last night. Good job in front of a huge audience! I look forward to the Bowdoin Webcasts of the rest of the playoffs.

And one more thing... Congratulations, Mules on a gutsy performance!
