Nescac 2009/2010

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Y'all have been making CCCP comments since way before I joined this board... did it originally ever have anything to do with the tendency of these leagues have an equitable distribution of talent such as is described in this post? It certainly fits the theme

Call me stupid if you want, but I've read this post a half a dozen times and I still don't understand what you are saying. What exactly is a CCCP comment anyway?

People on these boards refer to New England (particularly when discussing Interlock teams) as the CCCP.

CCCP is the russian-language (and Cyrillic alphabet) abbreviation for USSR.

USSR was communist, and communism is (ideally) about equity for all. To me, the NESCAC this year is described perfectly as the "CCCP" :p

Colby at Bowdoin...1st round of nescac playoffs? That's what it looks like right now...if it happens Watson Arena will be rocking

Oh! Thanks for clearing that up... I had no idea what CCCP stands for, nor did I know that Russia was once a communist nation:rolleyes: give me a friggin break! I'm nearly sixty years old, I remember when Nikita Khrushchev said " we will bury you", I remember the Civil Defense Air Raid Drills that we did in elementary school. I also understand that being called a communist is an insult regularly used against interlock fans, but I still don't understand why!

I think its a shot at the liberal politics espoused by people associated with some to the liberal arts schools in the NESCAC, and the fact that Vermont is considered by some to be the most liberal state in country. I just think its funny

Jimmy, but in one sense it is a compliment since they are saying that hockey in New England isn't a one or two trick pony

So the premise is: Liberalism=Communism. Now I get it, that is funny!:D

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

I guess I was giving Webb way too much credit!! I thought the CCCP thing was a shot at the style of hockey played in the NESCAC in that it was more like the Russian style of hockey, with an emphasis on passing and finesse, than the Canadian brand of hockey, with its emphasis on physicality and contact. The jerseys worn by the Russian Olympic hockey teams of years ago were, IIRC, emblazoned with CCCP. . . .

Colby's one shot at redemption after an inexplicable late-season meltdown would be a third win over Bowdoin in one season. It doesn't get any better.

Should be just an amazing game. Did you know that Bowdoin and Colby have somehow managed to never meet in the 10 past NESCAC play-offs?? Bowdoin has played Middlebury, Amherst, Trinity, Williams, and Hamilton a bunch of times in the play-offs but never Colby . . .

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

I try to make it a habit never to intrude on these Div III conference threads other than as it relates to my own team (Norwich) and ECAC-E Conference.

However, when I saw how the NESCAC playoffs have shaken out, I was surprised by how proverbial "cookie has crumbled" in the first round, e.g. #1 Bowdoin plays #8 Colby while #2 Middlebury plays #7 Tufts in their Conference Playoff. Don't get me wrong, I know how the system works.

But from what I heard on the radio regarding the Norwich/Tuft's game yesterday and compared to what I actually saw when NU played Bowdoin,Colby and Middlebury--that between Bowdoin's and Middlebury's first round opponents-- Bowdoin seems to have gotten the short end of the hockey stick. :(

The Colby club--Bowdoin is playing is not a #7 team regardless of what the standings are. Colby played NU to a very, very tough tie (we darn near lost that game) and the Mules have beaten Bowdoin twice this season--once on Bowdoin's big ice in Brnuswick. Tufts did tie Middlebury but early in the season as the Panthers were getting their act together. In NY we would say, "Such a deal!" The NESCAC playoffs should be loaded with fireworks--but with that schedule my money is on Middlebury for an easy 1st round win. Bowdoin--I would put at even money. Good luck to you all--you have great clubs.:)

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

My sense is that Colby's meltdown was very much related to injuries, but we will see. Jarnot is out for good. Belliveau nursing a hurt knee, a couple of concussions in players that are just coming back now. One just back from mono. Forwards playing D these past couple of weeks. Yesterday they played with their old spark....anything can happen when Colby and Bowdoin meet but I am sure Bowdoin will be psyched to avenge their 2 previous losses in December. It will be fun for sure!

I wasn't aware of the injuries, but "forwards playing defense" explains a lot.

In the last two games I was actually rooting for Bowdoin just to get this match-up. It's also good that the playoffs are in Maine.

I should add that Bowdoin is playing their best hockey of the year, and probably in NESCAC right now. They have been awesome in the third period. Colby finally looked good, yesterday, against the best St. A's team I can remember in awhile - with a goal-tending change.

Any one of these eight teams can get hot and string together three wins. But there is added pressure on the host team to win that first game or be sitting in the stands watching a tournament on their home ice. I love the drama!

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

The interlock. Is it true the NESCAC will be voting to end it (or extend) in April 2010, I was also told it appears to be a commitment through the 2010-2011 season anyway.
If so could someone please refer me to a site that would provide more information.

There is a meeting of the NESCAC athletic directors in Westford, Mass on March 9/10 and then a meeting of the NESCAC presidents on April 28 at Hamilton College. I suspect that the future of the interlock will be discussed at both meetings, with a final decision made by the presidents at the April 28 meeting. I am not aware of a website that provides info on this matter as the NESCAC operates in a fair amount of secrecy . . .

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Thank you for that... would you or anyone know if the interlock is in place for next season

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

I will be attending the Saturday Hamilton @ Williams game.

On an amusing side note I may just be a closet Norwich fan.
Both Williams and AIC have Norwich grads as Assistant coaches.
