Middlebury Earns Top Seed in NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship
2014 NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Seeding
HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury clinched the top seed and home ice advantage throughout the 2014 NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship a week ago after posting a win and a tie over Williams. The Panthers, who earned the No. 1 seed for the fourth straight year, will be in pursuit of their eighth conference title when quarterfinal action starts on Saturday, March 1. Williams, Amherst and Bowdoin have also earned the right to host quarterfinal round contests. The highest remaining seed following the quarterfinal round will host both semifinals and the final from March 8-9. This year’s champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
In the 12-year history of the NESCAC Championship, Middlebury (17-3-4, 12-0-4 NESCAC) has reached the final nine times and posted a mark of 23-6. Last year, the Panthers suffered a 2-1 loss to Bowdoin in the championship game. Prior to that, Middlebury found the winner’s circle in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012.
During the regular season, Middlebury did not lose a conference contest, as it paced the league in scoring offense (3.33) and ranked second in scoring defense (1.71). The Panthers will face No. 8-seed Connecticut College (10-11-3, 4-9-3 NESCAC) in the quarterfinal round. The Camels and Colby finished the regular season with matching winning percentages, but the Mules earned the seventh seed by virtue of owning a 1-0-1 record over Connecticut College. The Panthers swept the season series against the Camels by the scores of 3-2 in overtime and 3-0. In two all-time tournament meetings between the programs, Middlebury owns a 2-0 edge, including a 4-1 semifinal victory last season.
No. 2 seed Amherst (13-6-5, 9-3-4 NESCAC) has been consistent throughout the season courtesy of the top scoring defense in the league (1.62), and has been the hottest team in the NESCAC down the stretch going 4-1-2. The Jeffs have played in seven consecutive semifinal games, and advanced to the championship game six times en route to three league titles. Last season, Amherst saw its streak of final appearances snapped following a loss to Bowdoin in the semifinal round. The Jeffs will host seventh-seeded Colby (9-13-2, 5-10-1 NESCAC), which Amherst swept during the regular season by scores of 4-1 and 2-1. The Mules will be looking to move past the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2009. They advanced to the conference finals in 2008 before falling to Amherst, which owns a 3-1 all-time championship record versus Colby. The squads last met in the 2011 quarterfinal round when the Jeffs prevailed 5-0.
Third-seeded Williams (12-9-3, 9-4-3 NESCAC) had a rough start to the season going 3-5-0 in 2013, but went 7-1-1 in January to make a jump in the league standings and earn a home playoff game. The Ephs earned their highest seed since 2006 when they were the No. 3 seed and advanced to their most recent and fifth overall semifinal appearance. Williams is still searching for its first league title after losing to Bowdoin in the 2012 final. The Ephs will face sixth-seeded Trinity (10-7-7, 5-6-5 NESCAC) in the quarterfinal round. The Bantams lost both regular-season games versus Williams on Jan. 10-11, but rattled off six straight wins and closed out the schedule by going 0-2-4 against conference opponents. Trinity has made it to the semifinal round four times with its most recent appearance coming in 2012, while advancing to the 2010 final where it fell to Amherst in overtime.
Bowdoin, Trinity and Wesleyan finished the regular season with the same winning percentage after the Polar Bears defeated Amherst, 1-0, and the Cardinals and Bantams skated to a 4-4 draw. Bowdoin owned a 2-0-2 record against both squads, which clinched the fourth seed and final quarterfinal home game for the Polar Bears, while Trinity and Wesleyan were 0-1-3. Since Trinity and Wesleyan went 0-0-2 against each other in the final regular-season weekend and had a matching number of wins, records against the top four teams were compared. The Cardinals registered a 1-4-5 record versus Middlebury, Amherst, Williams and Bowdoin, while the Bantams went 0-6-4.
The remaining quarterfinal contest pits No. 4-seed Bowdoin (11-10-3, 6-7-3 NESCAC) against No. 5-seed Wesleyan (8-10-6, 5-6-5 NESCAC) on Saturday. The Polar Bears earned their third NESCAC title overall and first crown since 2004 when they knocked off Middlebury, 2-1, in 2013. If Bowdoin hopes to defend its title and make its fifth straight trip to the conference semifinals, it must go through the Cardinals. Wesleyan earned a tie or win against every league opponent, and went 3-1-2 in February to punch its first playoff ticket since 2004. The Cardinals had previously earned playoff berths in the first three NESCAC Championships. However, the Cardinals have yet to advance to the semifinal round. The teams have never squared off in the conference tournament.
Results for the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship will be available at the completion of each day on the NESCAC website.
