Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

What a difference a year makes! Off to Watson to watch the Polar Bears fight it out for 4th seed? Will we see the team that came back from a Friday loss to Midd and took them all the way to a 1-1 OT or the team that, needing the points, went belly up at Hamilton last Sunday?
Amherst sweeps Bowdoin
Williams sweeps Conn College
Colby sweeps Hamilton
Wesleyan and Trinity each win at home
Should for some totally unforeseen reason I be correct, it would (I think, if I am figuring the tie breakers correctly) make the pairings:
Conn #8@Midd #1
Bowdoin #7@Amherst #2
Colby #6@Williams #3
Trinity #5@Wesleyan #4

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

The Polar Bears gave the Lord Jeffs a tussle and the game was tied at the end of the 2nd, but Amherst banged home a pair of 3rd period goals for the 3-1 win at Watson. Bowdoin came out strong in the 1st and Amherst goalie Stuart was tested early when Kennedy worked into some open space and put a wrist shot on net from low in the left circle. The Polar Bears continued to get the puck to the net in the early half of the period. Bowdoin's Findley made a nice save on Tank at 11:37 of the 1st when a dump in caromed off the back boards to Tank at the stickside of the crease. The 2nd again saw Bowdoin pressuring Stuart early, but she was able to cover a loose puck at the top of the crease at :31. Amherst had a good scoring chance short handed when Opperman made a nifty pass through the neutral zone sending E. Martin in clean down right wing; Findley responded with a nice stickside save on E. Martin's drive from the low edge of the right circle. The Lord Jeffs took the lead on the power play when E. Martin fed Opperman starting a rush; Opperman lugged the puck through center, broke into the zone on the right and ripped a one timer from the top of the right circle; her low drive was saved by Findley, but Baranek found the rebound and her shot was in the net. The Polar Bears answered as the period was winding down. Bowdoin's Lane made a nice play pinching off a clearing pass at the blue line and her long shot from right point was in the net off MacNeil at the top of the crease. It appeared to some that MacNeil had gloved the puck and directed it in, but the officials conferred and the score was 1-1 as the 2nd ended. The Goal Gods had an almost immediate change of heart and the Lord Jeffs took the lead on a fluke goal. M. Martin got the puck to Flom deep on the right boards near the goal line and her centering pass was tipped by a D stick and was lofted high in the air; the puck hung in the air, landed in the crease, made a weird bounce, changing direction to the right and into the net. Moments later Stuart made a great save when Baird held the puck in zone, broke to her right across the high slot and dropped a behind the back, backhand pass to Kennedy; Stuart then made a right pad save of Kennedy's wrist shot from the slot. Around the mid point in the 3rd Bowdoin was applying steady pressure keeping Amherst pinned in their zone; a poor clearing pass at 14:59 forced Stuart to make a save on a quick shot from the slot. A minute later Amherst added an insurance goal when Tank worked hard in the left corner, won the puck and passed out along the half boards to M. Martin on left point; M. Martin's long shot was on net and Findley made a pad save but Harris pounced on the rebound for the score. Bowdoin took their time out and Coach O'Neil got her goalie out for the final 1:40, but despite swarming Stuart in the Amherst net the buzzer sounded on a 3-1 Lord Jeff win.

Middlebury Earns Top Seed in NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship

2014 NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Seeding

HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury clinched the top seed and home ice advantage throughout the 2014 NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship a week ago after posting a win and a tie over Williams. The Panthers, who earned the No. 1 seed for the fourth straight year, will be in pursuit of their eighth conference title when quarterfinal action starts on Saturday, March 1. Williams, Amherst and Bowdoin have also earned the right to host quarterfinal round contests. The highest remaining seed following the quarterfinal round will host both semifinals and the final from March 8-9. This year’s champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In the 12-year history of the NESCAC Championship, Middlebury (17-3-4, 12-0-4 NESCAC) has reached the final nine times and posted a mark of 23-6. Last year, the Panthers suffered a 2-1 loss to Bowdoin in the championship game. Prior to that, Middlebury found the winner’s circle in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

During the regular season, Middlebury did not lose a conference contest, as it paced the league in scoring offense (3.33) and ranked second in scoring defense (1.71). The Panthers will face No. 8-seed Connecticut College (10-11-3, 4-9-3 NESCAC) in the quarterfinal round. The Camels and Colby finished the regular season with matching winning percentages, but the Mules earned the seventh seed by virtue of owning a 1-0-1 record over Connecticut College. The Panthers swept the season series against the Camels by the scores of 3-2 in overtime and 3-0. In two all-time tournament meetings between the programs, Middlebury owns a 2-0 edge, including a 4-1 semifinal victory last season.

No. 2 seed Amherst (13-6-5, 9-3-4 NESCAC) has been consistent throughout the season courtesy of the top scoring defense in the league (1.62), and has been the hottest team in the NESCAC down the stretch going 4-1-2. The Jeffs have played in seven consecutive semifinal games, and advanced to the championship game six times en route to three league titles. Last season, Amherst saw its streak of final appearances snapped following a loss to Bowdoin in the semifinal round. The Jeffs will host seventh-seeded Colby (9-13-2, 5-10-1 NESCAC), which Amherst swept during the regular season by scores of 4-1 and 2-1. The Mules will be looking to move past the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2009. They advanced to the conference finals in 2008 before falling to Amherst, which owns a 3-1 all-time championship record versus Colby. The squads last met in the 2011 quarterfinal round when the Jeffs prevailed 5-0.

Third-seeded Williams (12-9-3, 9-4-3 NESCAC) had a rough start to the season going 3-5-0 in 2013, but went 7-1-1 in January to make a jump in the league standings and earn a home playoff game. The Ephs earned their highest seed since 2006 when they were the No. 3 seed and advanced to their most recent and fifth overall semifinal appearance. Williams is still searching for its first league title after losing to Bowdoin in the 2012 final. The Ephs will face sixth-seeded Trinity (10-7-7, 5-6-5 NESCAC) in the quarterfinal round. The Bantams lost both regular-season games versus Williams on Jan. 10-11, but rattled off six straight wins and closed out the schedule by going 0-2-4 against conference opponents. Trinity has made it to the semifinal round four times with its most recent appearance coming in 2012, while advancing to the 2010 final where it fell to Amherst in overtime.

Bowdoin, Trinity and Wesleyan finished the regular season with the same winning percentage after the Polar Bears defeated Amherst, 1-0, and the Cardinals and Bantams skated to a 4-4 draw. Bowdoin owned a 2-0-2 record against both squads, which clinched the fourth seed and final quarterfinal home game for the Polar Bears, while Trinity and Wesleyan were 0-1-3. Since Trinity and Wesleyan went 0-0-2 against each other in the final regular-season weekend and had a matching number of wins, records against the top four teams were compared. The Cardinals registered a 1-4-5 record versus Middlebury, Amherst, Williams and Bowdoin, while the Bantams went 0-6-4.

The remaining quarterfinal contest pits No. 4-seed Bowdoin (11-10-3, 6-7-3 NESCAC) against No. 5-seed Wesleyan (8-10-6, 5-6-5 NESCAC) on Saturday. The Polar Bears earned their third NESCAC title overall and first crown since 2004 when they knocked off Middlebury, 2-1, in 2013. If Bowdoin hopes to defend its title and make its fifth straight trip to the conference semifinals, it must go through the Cardinals. Wesleyan earned a tie or win against every league opponent, and went 3-1-2 in February to punch its first playoff ticket since 2004. The Cardinals had previously earned playoff berths in the first three NESCAC Championships. However, the Cardinals have yet to advance to the semifinal round. The teams have never squared off in the conference tournament.

Results for the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship will be available at the completion of each day on the NESCAC website.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

Apparently, the time the games are played are dependent upon whether the schools' men's teams are also hosting a playoff game. The results are now in:

Saturday, March 1

#8 Conn College @ #1 Middlebury NESCAC Quarterfinals - Middlebury, Vt. 1:00 PM

#7 Colby @ #2 Amherst NESCAC Quarterfinals - Amherst, Mass. 1:00 PM

#6 Trinity @ #3 Williams NESCAC Quarterfinals - Williamstown, Mass. 1:00 PM

#5 Wesleyan @ #4 Bowdoin NESCAC Quarterfinals - Brunswick, Maine 3:00 PM

Based on the complete unpredictability of this league, you know that at least one of the top 4 seeds are going down on Saturday. Any predictions on which one [or ones] don't move on?

The top seeds all lose, the NESCAC finals are in Middletown and everyone comes to our house in Old Lyme for breakfast March 9th! The way my predictions have gone that's as good a guess as any!

Trinity will knock off Williams. Conn gets physical and takes out Middlebury 1-0.

Trinity could certainly bounce the Ephs as defense and goaltending usually hold sway come playoff time, and the Ephs are at a distinct disadvantage in that Dept vs the Bantams.....However, not so sure about the Humps bouncing the Panthers....It will probably be close, but the problem with getting 'physical' [in their gym in particular] is that the Panther PP is deadly.

I would also give Colby a punchers chance based only on goaltending. Wheeler may be the difference in a one game winner-take-all.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

More Shots in the Dark for this weekend's games...

Colby vs. Amherst. Lord Jeffs win.
Wesly vs. BoBo. The Cardinals pull off a semi-upset at the Sid.
Conn vs. Midd. Panthers win a low scoring affair.
Trinity vs. Williams. The Bantams pull the upset, Maxwell the difference.

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

1-0 Conn after 1 Anctil scored for CC on put back...shots 10-6 Middy

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

WOW..... going into the games Saturday, who would have guessed that Middlebury and Amherst would both lose and that Williams would be hosting the NESCAC final weekend??!! None of the posters here even picked Williams to beat Trinity. Really nice to see some new teams (Williams, Colby, Conn) in the final weekend to shake things up. Hopefully Bowdoin doesn't win and take us back to same old same old.

Amherst is clearly out of the NCAA picture now. The winner will be in of course. Do folks think that Middlebury still gets a NCAA bid now as an at large team if the rest of the league playoffs go to plan (Platty vs Elmira and both go to NCAA, Norwich wins out)? I'm thinking yes, but it is definitely not a lock with the way that Middlebury finished. Also, didn't appear that a couple of Midds stronger forwards played yesterday - anybody know the issue - illness, injury, etc.?

Re: NESCAC '13-'14 season

A strange day at Kenyon yesterday afternoon. Congratulations to Coach Steele and the Camels on their thrilling 2-1 OT upset win over Middlebury in the NESCAC quarter final! The Panthers skated without their two leading scorers due to disciplinary incidents of the past 10 days.
The Camels took an early lead when Bogue held the puck at the blue line as it came up the left wing half boards and from the left point got the puck on net; Midd goalie Jones did the splits but Izzi with a put back and then Anctil for the score were there to cash in the rebound. Minutes later Midd had a good look at Fralick when a long pass sprang Joyce on a semi break away; Fralick made the save on Joyce's shot from the right circle, but a penalty was called as Joyce, tied up trying for the rebound, crashed into the gloveside post. Wardwell then rang a shot from the right circle off the cross bar at 10:30. The 2nd opened with Middlebury quickly evening the score a 1-1. Krakower skated up the left wing in her own zone and then made a diagonal indirect pass cross ice off the boards in front of the Panther bench. Schulman raced down right wing, fielded the pass, muscled around the Conn D and got a shot on net from a wide angle; Fralick made the save, but Joyce, coming up crashing the net made the score. The rest of the 2nd saw Conn whistled for 4 penalties and the Panthers mount relentless pressure with good puck control on the powerplay, but the Camel defense and stellar work by Fralick held them at bay. The 3rd saw more of the same, including 2 full minutes of the Panthers skating 5x3. Conn did skate a powerplay of their own with time running down, but regulation ended tied at 1-1. The OT opened with Midd's Jones making a spectacular series of saves at the gloveside post. The game winner came on a faceoff to Jones' right following an icing call on the Panthers. Conn won the face off, got the puck to the net and it hopped up over Jones for the score; Germano with the goal and Moore with the assist.
I admit to a certain disappointment at the outcome, but I have to say it was a great game. My hat is off to Coach Mandigo and his moral courage in making the decision suspending his players for this game. The value of athletics in higher education is to teach student athletes that they are responsible for their actions and will be held accountable. It is fashionable to see the Panthers as having some special relationship with the on ice officials; the fact is the Middlebury culture does not tolerate the careless, often selfish, play which results in penalties, or play that can cause injury to others.
Best of luck to the Camels as they advance to the semi final against Williams next Saturday!
