Re: Nescac 10 - 11
I am starting to feel as though I commute to the Williams '64 (which would be nice, as it is 50 miles closer than my office). Last night Amherst just had the better team and pulled away from Trinity for a 6-2 win. Looking at the box score I seem to have the assists all wrong (not to mention the period in which scoring took place), so it is difficult to offer too detailed a description of play. The 1st saw the teams trade goals on the powerplay. The Lord Jeffs were on the board quickly when Fisher grabbed a rebound and scored the first of her pair for the evening. Trinity tied things when Weiss took a perfect feed as she arrived at Hu's stickside post, and although well covered, redirected the puck into the twine. Fisher scored her 2nd of the night mid-way through the period, and then the box score and I diverge, as I saw Colman-McGaw score in the 3rd period when she made a nifty tip on a shot from the left point to sneak the puck past Hu inside the short, stickside post. The box has this as taking place in the 2nd and tying the score at 2-2. Amherst goals 3 and 4 were similar in that both were open looks following scrums at the top of the crease. I must credit my Editor with pointing out, during Trinity's win last week over Manhattanville, that the Bantam D collapse on the crease and make it difficult for the goalie to find the puck. Salerno scored on just such a situation when the puck came to her to the right of the slot and she buried the puck up on Maxwell's stickside. Hanlon was alone in the high slot and rifled in the 4th Amherst goal. The 3rd period saw Amherst capitalize on a Bantam line change when Vitale stepped over the blueline on left wing (opposite the Bantam bench) and launched a long drive which handcuffed Maxwell, the rebound deposited in the net by Campbell. Doyen closed out the scoring when she made a nice shot through traffic and picked the top gloveside corner following yet another scrum at the top of the crease.
The Lord Jeffs are a good, maybe really good team. They clearly are right there at the top of the NESCAC. The Amherst faithful felt they had not played terribly in the RIT games, rather that the Tigers are big and tough, getting great goaltending (note to Norwich on that one), played better hockey and maybe it is their year (some even mentioned grabbing a currently offerred $79 March airfare to Rochester?).
Rematch today at Williams '64; the Editor is even making the trip!
Postscript: bummer for the Polar Bears last night up at Watson losing 3-1 to Hamilton. I really felt Bowdoin was poised to return to the top of the NESCAC if not the nation and losing at home to other mid pack NESCAC teams is not getting the job done. Misplaced Polar-pride? Mark the weekend of 1/14-1/15 all you NESCAC fans, as that is Midd@Amherst twice and it just looks like they are the top of the heap again.
