2010-11 Women's Ice Hockey
Conf. Overall
Middlebury 4-0-0 5-0-0
Amherst 2-0-0 2-2-0
Trinity 2-0-0 3-0-0
Bowdoin 2-1-0 3-1-0
Connecticut College 2-2-0 2-2-0
Colby 1-2-0 2-2-0
Hamilton 1-3-0 1-4-0
Williams 1-3-0 1-3-0
Wesleyan 0-4-0 0-5-0
Above are the standings entering the 3rd weekend of NESCAC play. It is hard to point to any real surprises so far. Amherst did not play well out at Ritter? Trinity beat Manhattanville? All non-conference stuff... Midd is sitting there at 4-0 in NESCAC, but we all expected them to rebound from a disappointing '09-'10 (16-7-3 IS just that, if you're Midd). So tonight at the Williams '64 we get to start to sort things out when Amherst slides down I-91 to visit Trinity. I have seen all 3 Bantams games and they are a very good (ask the Valiants), experienced, yet slightly flawed team (in that they rely on Weiss to produce a significant, 30% of their offense and their 1st years appear to still be grasping the 2-3, 2-1-2 or whatever system they are featuring, although the 1st year goalies are flashing a collective .956 saves %). Amherst is simply the BEST 2-2 team in the country and while my plans to follow them west of the Hudson seem to routinely fall apart, I do expect them to turn things around (soon). Then there is the pack, and this is where this weekend's games become so important, as come seeding time for the NESCAC tournament in the end of February the 4 points you earned back in early December come in really handy.
Anyway for 12/3
Bowdoin over Hamilton-too much Polar bear offense and I was not blown away by Hamilton last weekend
Conn over Colby-the Camels are better
Amherst over Trinity
Williams over St. A-NESCAC pride pick of the weekend
12/4
Amherst over Trinity
Conn over Bowdoin-the Camels seem to give the Polar Bears fits at Watson
Colby over Hamilton
Midd over Williams
So, in closing: GO U BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and GOOD LUCK to the men's soccer team down in San Antonio)

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Trinity website shows 6-2 Amherst final.

Didn't know there was video for tonight's game until too late.

Tomorrow, too.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Bowdoin game 3-1 loss to Hamilton...interesting outcome, poor, reffing, Bowdoin started taking some bad penalties at the end...looks like Hamilton's freshman are producing too.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Both surprising results. I caught some bits of the webcasts and I thought Trinity would've put up more of a fight. The Bowdoin game was some good hockey. Awful reffing, but consistently awful. Hamilton could potentially leapfrog into 5th place if they bring that kind of effort against Colby.

Anyone else have some insight?

Two games in a row where Bowdoinn is getting some undisciplined penalties. Will be interesting to watch their next few games. Hopefully their new coach can correct this, as this team has talent, but can't win if they are short handed.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

I am starting to feel as though I commute to the Williams '64 (which would be nice, as it is 50 miles closer than my office). Last night Amherst just had the better team and pulled away from Trinity for a 6-2 win. Looking at the box score I seem to have the assists all wrong (not to mention the period in which scoring took place), so it is difficult to offer too detailed a description of play. The 1st saw the teams trade goals on the powerplay. The Lord Jeffs were on the board quickly when Fisher grabbed a rebound and scored the first of her pair for the evening. Trinity tied things when Weiss took a perfect feed as she arrived at Hu's stickside post, and although well covered, redirected the puck into the twine. Fisher scored her 2nd of the night mid-way through the period, and then the box score and I diverge, as I saw Colman-McGaw score in the 3rd period when she made a nifty tip on a shot from the left point to sneak the puck past Hu inside the short, stickside post. The box has this as taking place in the 2nd and tying the score at 2-2. Amherst goals 3 and 4 were similar in that both were open looks following scrums at the top of the crease. I must credit my Editor with pointing out, during Trinity's win last week over Manhattanville, that the Bantam D collapse on the crease and make it difficult for the goalie to find the puck. Salerno scored on just such a situation when the puck came to her to the right of the slot and she buried the puck up on Maxwell's stickside. Hanlon was alone in the high slot and rifled in the 4th Amherst goal. The 3rd period saw Amherst capitalize on a Bantam line change when Vitale stepped over the blueline on left wing (opposite the Bantam bench) and launched a long drive which handcuffed Maxwell, the rebound deposited in the net by Campbell. Doyen closed out the scoring when she made a nice shot through traffic and picked the top gloveside corner following yet another scrum at the top of the crease.
The Lord Jeffs are a good, maybe really good team. They clearly are right there at the top of the NESCAC. The Amherst faithful felt they had not played terribly in the RIT games, rather that the Tigers are big and tough, getting great goaltending (note to Norwich on that one), played better hockey and maybe it is their year (some even mentioned grabbing a currently offerred $79 March airfare to Rochester?).
Rematch today at Williams '64; the Editor is even making the trip!
Postscript: bummer for the Polar Bears last night up at Watson losing 3-1 to Hamilton. I really felt Bowdoin was poised to return to the top of the NESCAC if not the nation and losing at home to other mid pack NESCAC teams is not getting the job done. Misplaced Polar-pride? Mark the weekend of 1/14-1/15 all you NESCAC fans, as that is Midd@Amherst twice and it just looks like they are the top of the heap again.

I think the most intersting non-call was the Polar Bear Defenseman lying on top of the puck behind the net and not getting off or making an attempt to push it out from under here. No Penalty just a face off.

So much for middle of the pack. After today's results, we've got a 3-way tie for third place between Bowdoin, Conn, and Hamilton.

Bowdoin 4
Conn 3

Amherst 2
Trinity 2

Hamilton 4
Colby 3

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Hamilton had a great weekend in Maine coming out with two Wins.

Bowdoin it was like two halves in each period, each team won their half but Hamilton was able to get it done with some help from the puck gods, the second goal deflected off the defense man and looked like a softball high pitch and dropped behind the goalie. The third I believe was the first power play goal for them this season. They netted a goal in each period against the polar bears in the 3-1 win.

At Colby they were down 3-0 Colby's small speedsters and never give up on the puck got them two and then a real pretty goal by a freshman put them on top 3-0 just into the 3rd period. The third the Continentals came to play scored two quickly at the start, they changed the aggressiveness on the blue line and contained the speedsters put in two more in the third while Colby could not seem to regain control and get much offense going.

Continentals got on the bus for the 7 hour ride home very happy.

Not that I had a successful weekend prognostication-wise, but one I did predict correctly
was Conn 1 Colby 0 on 12/3...nice job on prediciting the tie between Amherst and Trinity though (has to have been a disappointing if not plain ugly result for the Lord Jeffs).

Gosh, thanks Philip....however, I think your second wrong is, well, wrong and I was right, Conn College did beat Colby. Sooooo, it would appear I only had one wrong....is that right? By the way, I owe it all to my flux capacitor.

Phil D. "Stands" corrected... and humbled by your powers...

what's the outlook for March? Do I book the Marriott at Middlebury and buy the low fare to Rochester?

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Take one of those cheap flights to either Rochester NY or to Burlington VT and drive to Plattsburgh, the final four will be hosted in one of those two places.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Lots of out of conference action for the last games before break. Any bold predictions?

Can't let "NHDad" out-pick me --we'll have to rename him "Timmy the Geek"
UXmass over Wesleyan (seasonal pick -- sorry, it's not in the Cards)
Bowdoin over Colby
Conn College over Salve Regina
Norwich over Trinity
RIT over Hamilton
Trinity over Salve Regina
Neumann --- Conn College -- tie
Colby over UXmas (White mules have seasonal colors -- just need to strap some antlers and bells on em and they are winners)
Amherst over Norwich (but not by much -- OT)

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Congratulations to Trinity for their impressive win over Norwich this evening!!! Way to represent the NESCAC!
Very exciting game. Norwich came out flying and carried play early, the Trinity got some offense going, helped by a full minute of 5x3, midway in the 1st. Norwich looked like they were going to blow the Bantams away in the 2nd, but could only muster an unassisted Leclerc goal at the end of a powerplay following a failed Trin D attempt to clear the puck up the boards. Colman-McGaw tied it early in the 3rd, taking a pass out of the neutral zone from Weiss and dragging a Cadet D and the puck into the net. Trinity scored the game winner when Komarek held the puck in at the blueline, found Weiss on the right point and her shot from the top of the circle into traffic was deflected by Guglielmi and eluded Plamondon and trickled over the goal line. The Bantams play really tough D, are not afraid to handle the puck in their own zone and sort of lull you to sleep and suddenly, bang and they have a break away. Way to go Bantams!
