Nescac 10 - 11

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Utica@Amherst postponed. No new date set.
I watched the webcast of Superior@Gustavus last evening and Trinity should give them a game on Friday.
GOOD LUCK to the Bantams out in Minnesota!!!

Well, that's unfortunate! It looks like my evening in Manhattan is washing (snowing) out, and this webcast was my consolation.

Trinity was going to head out today, because they are not in session yet. I wonder how their travel plans have changed with all of the snow that Hartford is getting?

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Congratulations to Corvi and the Cardinals on representing the NESCAC with a 1-1 tie against NEC this afternoon. They outshot the Pilgrims 27-25, tied the game up late in the 3rd and withstood an NEC powerplay in OT!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

The Trinity team arrived in Minnesota last night; they had a practice today and am sure are looking forward to tomorrow evening's game.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Big weekend NESCAC-wise, as everyone is in action except Williams!
I think there is a consensus on some combination of Amherst, Middlebury and Trinity taking the top 3 spots (Midd's trip into Orr representing the Lord Jeff detractors last stand, if you will). That leaves Bowdoin, Hamilton and Conn College slugging it out for the 4th and last home NESCAC quarter final spot, and the Polar Bears take on both on the road. Three interesting non-conference games see Trinity out west defending NESCAC (and eastern) honor against MIAC Gustavus and St. Thomas (GO U BANTAMS!!!).
Friday:
Amherst over Midd-Midd plays very well as a team, but has had trouble scoring; Amherst has been a bit inconsistent, has made some adjustment in their D pairing, the line combos are starting to gel and played pretty well beating Conn twice last weekend (granted a sloppy game after the unexpected overnight in New London).

Trinity over Gustavus-I watched Gustavus play Superior and I think their dump and chase style will not play well against the Bantam 2-1-2/3 back defense; Trinity in a close 2-1 kind of game
Saturday:
Sacred Heart over Wesleyan-SH may have too much size for the Cardinals, but that tie with NEC?

Trinity over St. Thomas- more like 3-1

Conn over Colby-Conn probably is skating their best team ever; Colby needs more than Scarpato

Bowdoin over Hamilton-it is time for the Polar Bears to step up and show they are (almost) contenders, not pretenders; anyone know if Miguel is back in the Continnental line-up? I must also note I have absolutely ZERO success predicting Bowdoin scores these past few years, so it might be a good time to head over to your local bookie and bet the ranch on Hamilton!

Midd at Amherst tie-after losing Friday the Panthers really need the point (just a gut feeling here, although a 1-0-1 weekend still pretty much sews up the regular season title for the Lord Jeffs).
Sunday:
Hamilton over Colby

Conn over Bowdoin-Conn has given the Polar Bears fits the past couple of seasons, although both can play a physical game; tough to play that 3pm game after driving down from the wilds of Clinton and arriving at the hotel in the wee hours of Sunday am, nevertheless GO U BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

I had the pleasure of watching a great game last evening up at Orr. What more could you want in DIII hockey? Snow, cold, lots of fans and parents out supporting their teams, former players (Kogut of Midd, Harrington of Amherst, apologies to others...), refs did not influence outcome, the atmosphere when Midd and Amherst play is the best.
Thinking back, it seems one of the rare womens games when a hit (and penalty) late in the 1st period was the play of the game, but when Harisiades was called for checking at 17:29 it just altered the flow, as her play and energy became contagious. It was the third Midd penalty of the period and the Lord Jeffs had spent a lot of time peppering Bloom in the Mid goal. Wasted opportunities come back to haunt you. Bloom (who is sporting an unconscious .963 NESCAC saves %) made the big time saves and allowed her team to stay in a game that the Lord Jeffs could easily have broken open. However, the goal gods (does each team have its own or do they just switch sides?) did not reward the Lord Jeffs despite their 13-3 shots advantage in the 1st. Amherst's best chance of the 2nd came when Hanlon worked out of the right corner and snuck a backhand low off the far, stickside post. Shots for the 2nd were 10-7 for Amherst, but then came the 3rd period Panther surge. Midd had been forechecking relentlessly the entire game and they really turned it up in the 3rd. They broke through when they held the blueline on the left side as Amherst was breaking out, and got the puck down deep into the right corner. Waters got the puck to Harisiades, Hu made the save on her shot but was down and Ugalde rammed it home. Midd made it 2-0 about 7 minutes later after buzzing around in the Amherst zone. Greer passed from deep in the right corner to Krakower, she had a bit of space and chipped a shot from the edge of the right cirlce beating Hu up gloveside. Amherst withstood a 5x3 later in the period and did get Hu off for an extra attacker only to see Woodward add an empty net goal for the final 3-0.
This all throws the top of the NESCAC into turmoil! Amherst has a win and tie with Trinity; Midd has a tie with Trinity (and a huge 1/29 date in Hartford) and a return engagement with Amherst his afternoon. It should be worth the drive!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Miguel is back for Hamilton although not completely back at full strength and I am excited to see the rematch between them and Bowdoin. As for the rematch of Amherst and Middlebury, what is everyone thinking?

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Results for sunday:

Conn over Bowdoin 4-2, Lessard yanked after one with the score tied 1-1, anyone know details

Hamilton over Colby 2-1...not too shabby with the picks there, obserbear!

I watched the Conn-Bowdoin game. Lessard in fact gave up 3 goals and was pulled after the Dumont goal early in the 2nd. 20 penalties and no discipline on either side. Bowdoin skated a minute 6x3 at the end, but could not tie things up.

As long as I have been watching womens' hockey, I still cannot seem to figure it out. On Friday night Middlebury seemed to find the solution to Amherst in a crazy third period, and when I sat down to watch the rematch on Saturday I was ready to see Midd continue the aggressive attack that led to a 21-4 shot advantage in the third period, and also anxious to see how Amherst responded. Almost shockingly, both teams reverted to the form they had displayed the previous 5-6 times they played, with Amherst on the attack and Midd hanging on. Kudos to the Lord Jeffs for responding.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Panthers looked good tuning up for the stretch run with a 4-1 win over Holy Cross. Typical team effort on offense, great passing in transition and rock solid D in front of Bloom (as long as we're overlooking the last minute).

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

2-0 Amherst. Replacement announcer ...

Murphy in goal for Amherst. Zappan for St. A's.

St. A's on the power play.

Zappan (F) scores to help her goalie sister (I assume) after an Amherst blue line slap shot turns into a 2 on 1 the other way.

2-1 Amherst.

Amherst now on the PP.

After a turnover, a trip and it's 4 on 4. 7 1/2 minutes left in 2nd.
