Nescac 10 - 11

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

OK, there's a surprise -- Williams 1 Hamilton 0
The box shows Hazlett didn't play, and that the penalties were of the more physical contact variety --- pretty even game otherwise with shots, but one williams player gets 5 penalties in the game -- what is the limit in this category -- or is there one? I thought there was some exclusion if you got more than 4 or 5 -- like fouling out in basketball -- is this true?
Good rebound for Williams coming off a loss to Conn and being outshot decidedly there.

Actually Hamilton held on to a 1-0 Lead from the opening minutes till about just under 7 minutes to go when a deflected puck went up over Hazlett's right shoulder, then Williams topped it off with a Power Play goal minutes later. Hamilton controlled most of the power plays, but was just unable to stick it in. Ended in a 2-1 Loss for Hamilton Hazlett was in net. http://www.dougspics.com/Hamilton-C...y-POW-2011-11/14747346_7ff3f#1099142936_wvKLS

Bowdoin at Colby was a good game, with Bowdoin winning 2-1 in OT. I actually think Colby controlled a lot of the play later in the game. They had a number of chances to get the lead but the Polar Bear goaltender made some strong saves to keep it tied. Both goalies were really strong. Good to see. Colby looked good for the first game of the season.:D

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Hey, congratulations to the Polar Bear women for winning the ntl chamionship in Field Hockey on penalty strokes after 2 scoreless overtimes! That's their 3rd in 4 years -- stunning! We know NESCAC is full of champions.

It will be nice to get full rosters going, and to recharge with family over the holiday.

Good job, bears!

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

I thought the rule was after 5 penalties you get a 1 game suspension. Another rule change?

That was the USA Hockey rule, if I recall correctly.

Not sure if it's an NCAA rule, too.

I suspect not, because it would have resulted in removal from the game in which the 5 penalties were incurred.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Ashleigh Corvi for Player of the Week? She faced 123 shots in two games (111/123 for a .902 saves %) in going 0-2 at Amherst. I did not see the Saturday game, but she must have been standing on her head making 70 saves on 75 shots!

As deserved as the keeper's performance is...sadly the defense goes unheralded in the face of offense. A pitchers' duel or a shoot-out? The shoot-out always wins for American attention spans. Anyone who racked up three goals in those games for Amherst will probably get the nod. I know Heidi Woodworth was effective for 3 for Middlebury in her first two games. It will be an interesting call. Not much from Colby-Bowdoin (although great goaltending on both sides), no sign of Trinity yet (speaking of goaltending -- how will they fare?), Amherst-Wes a mis-match, and Williams-Hamilton and Conn-Midd are probably a rich area to choose from (Hazlett and Woodworth and rookie Courtney Dumont for Conn and I think Williams had a fine performance but I can't recall who yet)

A quick visit to the nescac website will prove you wrong. America likes offense but the coaches picked Bloom for POTW.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

It should be an interesting game in Stamford tonight. The teams have not met since the Bantams 3-2 win over the Valiants back on 1/28/2009. Manhattanville rosters 6 players from the squad that lost that game, while Trinity has 14 of those players on the ice tonight (led by 2nd team AHCA All-American Komarek and All-NESCAC forwards Weiss and Colman-McGaw). The big question for the Bantams will be goal play, as Player of the Year Iwachiw has graduated. Hitchcock has a career .978 saves %, but has amassed those numbers in only 180 minutes in net (Trinity has 1st year goalies Maxwell and Pujol on their roster). I saw the Valiants split 2 games with Elmira up in Pine Valley, however 2 sport athletes Nonis and Occhionero were absent. This will be the Valiants 8th game, while it is Trinity's '10-'11 debut.
GOOD LUCK to both squads!

Yes, 2 shutouts last year vs. Wesleyan, and one 1-goal game vs. Nichols. Not much of a record to go on. It will be interesting to see how she and the 2 first-years do.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

A couple of random thoughts on the Trinity win down in Stamford. The box score is misleading on at least two points. The penalty at 8:53 of the 2nd was called on the Manhattanville goalie, Cote #30, and was served by Scioli #3. I was surprised the Valiant bench was not assessed a penalty, as their coach was seen to throw a water bottle while the ref Kaselouskas was explaining his call on Cote, who had clearly tripped or interferred with a Bantam forward. The Bantams cashed in their 2nd powerplay goal on the penalty when Komarek fed across to Weiss on the other point and her shot resulted in a rebound to Cote's stickside which was pounced upon by Ryan who chipped the puck into the net with Cote down. Weiss scored the game winner shorthanded late in the 2nd when she picked a D's pocket at the blueline and was off to the races. She had a trailer to her left and the Valiant D was coming up to cut off a pass across the slot, but Weiss beat Cote with a backhand high on Cote's gloveside. Manhattanville did seem to be coming on in the 3rd, as it really looked like Trinity was out of gas. Pizzuto got them on the board with a low shot from the right point into traffic that beat Pujol 5 hole. Skating 4x4 Nutkevitch's low drive from the blueline beat Pujol gloveside to make it a 3-2 game. The box score does not show that Manhattanville pulled Cote with about 1 minute remaining and that they skated 6x4 following Komarek's penalty at 19:02. The Valiants took a time out, but that may have given the spent Bantams a moment to regroup and they held on for the win.
People have been wondering about the Trinity goaltending situation following the loss of Player of the Year Iwachiw to graduation. Pujol played very well; she is a big tender and was particularly effecitve controlling the puck and not leaving juicy rebounds lying around her crease. I have to say I may have under estimated the Bantams this season.

Bigger surprise - Oswego 5, Hamilton 1

Anyone have insight on that one? Looking at the box score Williams had another great outing

Odd start to the year for Hamilton.

Looking at their first 3 games, they've racked up 19 penalties so far. And have had 26 power play opportunities.

8 first years on the team, but a "leaving the penalty box early" violation was on a senior.... embellishment call against a first year ...

Given up 4 power play goals, and are 0-26 with the advantage.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Looks like hamilton's Coach is playing the whole roster
On the Power play they control the puck for the most part, getting the shots off but nothing is getting by.
I still would not count them out, soon the freshman are going to get in the groove and the puck will start to go in. Have a good Turkey Day

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

I have to say I may have under estimated the Bantams this season.

I would agree with the 'Bear -- I didn't rank the Bantams since I counted Iwachiw so heavily, and discounted them more without her, but a quick look at their first game and box score confirms that they return a number of offensive performers and defensive talent, so I do think they are poised to improve on their performance last year and that this year's seniors want and can go even deeper. Thank you, obserbear, for your good insight into their opener.

Re: Nescac 10 - 11

Hope everyone has recovered from all that food and family and is ready to get bck to business.
Amherst over RIT-I had high hopes of going up to watch this, but alas...should be a great contest, but I think Amherst has more talent top to bottom.
Trinity over Hamilton-Trinity looked good the other night beating Manhattanville and Hamilton has yet to get things going this season
Conn over Wesleyan-Conn played Midd close and it looks like a loooooooong season for the Cardinals
Midd over Colby-Midd has the depth, and playing in Kenyon, the Mules do not have enough

I agree with you bear that the 2 game set this weekend tween RIT and Amherst will be a dandy. I would not underestimate RIT however. They have some goaltending this year, have retained most of their point production and appear to have had a good recruiting year. Amherst on the other hand IMHO is due to take a hard fall.

Wonder if the games are webcast...
