Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

First reports out of Japan of someone getting the virus, recovering, and getting it again.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Who said anything about privatizing the CDC? You were whining that the CDC couldn't come up with any vaccines because of Trump. I was pointing out that vaccines don't come from the CDC, and aren't created by them.

No, the NIH does. Which was also cut.

https://www.niaid.nih.gov/research/role

Let's privatize them too.

NIAID supports research at external academic and research institutions through funding opportunities including grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. Decades of NIAID-funded research has helped further the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of many of the world's most intractable and widespread conditions in the areas of allergy, immunology and infectious diseases. In addition to targeted requests for proposals in response to initiatives, NIAID is always accepting researcher-initiated applications. Connect with NIAID program officers about potential funding.

I'm sure these grants from the government do nothing. Or are academic institutions.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

I don't believe it.

However, it the virus mutated, and they got that mutated version, then we may as well watch The Stand...

In all seriousness what would prevent this from happening? Let's assume somebody is in a high risk position. I dunno, maybe he's a test engineer at Acme Spittoons. If the version B mutation moves the virus outside of the scope of whatever immunity fought off version A, why couldn't he catch version B?

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

That's different. That's getting version A repeatedly (or, I assume far more likely, all signs of the virus going dormant, which would be f-cking terrifying because it would mean once you have it we never know if you're clear).

I think we can all agree that the only way to fight this effectively is to jail more Mexicans and deport Muslims. Possibly also suspend the elections and declare all Democratic office holders enemies of the state. We're looking into that.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

We really need to do this with fire departments.

before municipal fire service there was a history of property insurance companies creating their own fire brigades to protect property they insured

There would be a profit-motive for insurance companies to get as many people vaccinated as possible.

That's what I'm saying. If this virus is mutating this quickly and then reinfecting people this quickly, who may already be weakened by the initial bout, we may as well watch The Stand, because that's what we're heading towards... (I know I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but it is a scary scenario.)

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Japan just closed schools for a month. If you're a parent with school-aged children: think for a second about how massively disruptive this would be. This is the kind of thing that Dr Messonier told Americans to prepare for and it's also totally at odds with the President's tone.</p>— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) <a href="https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1233016080643317762?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 27, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

This could be read as one reason why Japan is on the list of "most prepared" but from a glass half empty perspective you could interpret this as, "Even as prepared as they are they're having to shut down their schools entirely?".

She’s gonna be fired. This could be start of a cdc purge as closeted veep and his prayer beads move in

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">I’m told the president’s anger about the CDC briefing yesterday is focused on Dr. Nancy Messonnier, who said it’s not whether, it’s when the virus will hit the US. “She never should have said that,” a senior administration official told me. “it’s bad.”</p>— Eamon Javers (@EamonJavers) <a href="https://twitter.com/EamonJavers/status/1232748385628807169?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 26, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The never-ending lesson: Don't anger Herr Führer.

By the way. Anyone catch how Pence was put in charge? After what he did in Indiana you could not have picked a worse person.

I agree. It's like the chicken pox virus staying in you and then causing shingles later on.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

I'm not sure about this but my impression is Japan still has a fairly large number of housewives. That may make it less impactful.

You certainly couldn't do this in any American city unless you sent the kids to someplace out in the country with clear fresh air please forget I said anything.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Most insurance companies pay for a flu vaccine. Why wouldn't they pay for a coronavirus vaccine?

You mean we all do. They don't pay it, they increase our rates so that they can maintain profits and then let us have extra coverage. Which just adds to my question of why do we have to make everything a profit center?

What ever happened to doing things for the common good?
