It was a very, very entertaining weekend of hockey in Adrian. Both teams should be proud of how they played, especially Point since they were the underdogs. They certainly didn’t get “rolled” over this weekend.
In the first game, Adrian outplayed Point, but Point got a key goal at the end of the first period and then two quick goals in the 3rd, one on a PP and the other one just after the penalties expired. Point got a few lucky bounces, and their goalie came up big.
In the second game, all of the scoring came on PPs with the exception of the winning goal by Adrian in OT. Point had a chance to tie the game, but with 1:40 second left in OT, Adrian scored. It was not a gutsy move for Adrian to pull their goalie – it was a must do as a tie would have meant that Point moved on.
In the mini game, Point had some PP opportunities, but could not capitalize. A Point goal was disallowed near the end of regulation with a player in the crease call. Pictures show the player was in the crease, but clearly not interfering with the goalie [not sure if this was a good call or not]. My only regret of the weekend was that the referees did not let the players decide the outcome of this mini-game on their own. After regulation, when the Zamboni doors opened to resurface, one of the referees clearly gave the F’nheimer like he was disgusted the game was continuing. Then, about 15 seconds into the OT, an interference penalty was called on Point. I don’t believe a penalty like this should be called in OT. It was called far away from the play and did not affect the play. The outcome of the game might have been the same without this penalty call, but that would have been okay. Even losing on a PP goal for a legitimate penalty would have been okay. But having the ref clearly make a call simply to get the game over was not okay – the players deserved better.
That aside, Point played outstanding hockey and certainly gave Adrian a run for their money. After the sadness of losing wears off, the Point girls should feel good about how they played this weekend and hold their heads high. While they lose 3 great senior players, they have a good core of younger players to build around, and I see good things for this team in the future. Good luck to Adrian in playoffs.
