NCAA Tournament - 12 Teams in 2016-17

Can't remember if this has been discussed but anyways...the 12th team this year is official. Four Pool C bids now.

2017 Berths
Pool A = 7 institutions
Pool B = 1 institution
Pool C = 4 institutions
To be considered during the selection process either as an automatic berth (Pool A) or at-large (Pool B and Pool C), an institution
must play at least 70 percent of its competition against Division III in-region opponents, unless a waiver has been
approved by the Division III Championships Committee.
Additionally, input is provided by regional advisory committees for consideration by the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey
Committee. Coaches’ polls and/or any other outside polls or rankings are not used as a selection criterion by the NCAA
Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Committee.

AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION
For the Division III championship, a 12-team format will be used. Automatic-qualification privileges have been granted to the
following conferences:
Commonwealth Coast Conference
Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
New England Hockey Conference
New England Small College Athletic Conference
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association
State University of New York Athletic Conference

Thanks for the info. Thought the WIAC might have purchased an AQ bid but that does not seem to be the case. Only 9 of the 32 NCAA DIII Champions are current WIAC organizations. Maybe it will take a 10th to get the Committee's attention. #HailTheWest

The conference must have a minimum of 7 teams to be eligible for an auto bid. Bottom line !

Re: NCAA Tournament - 12 Teams in 2016-17

Can we divide D3 into 4 regions?

For Example
Region 1: WIAC, NCHA, MIAC
Region 2: SUNYAC, UCHC
Region 3: NEHC, CCC
Region 4: NESCAC, MASCAC

A completely ridiculous idea. This assumes each region will have only three teams in it. No one knows who the Pool C teams are until the selections. You going to fly a western team or two out east in the first round just to balance the brackets? Yeah that'll fly. Just stupid.

Three Regions including all conferences. Each region with similar amount of teams. 27 teams in the west, this would make other two divisions right at 28-30 teams. Conference winners AQ. West region gets 4 Playoff teams, 3 conference winners and a pool B team. East splits the remaining playoff spot for a bounced powerhouse or quality ruunner-up. TRAVEL is no longer an issue and it's all right again. Come on people, think. "The Bottom Line" is BS.

As soon as the UCHC gets the AQ, Pool B goes bye bye

Ok. Make 12 teams work. Assume an AQ for the UCHC and no Pool B.

Here.
Here.

Discussing anything that doesn't fall within the repeatedly stated guidelines is utterly pointless.

With restrictions on travel, there is no working. If all 4 Pool Cs went to the "west", it can't be split into regions.

2nd, how is it fair the NEHC gets the CCC, and the NESCAC gets the MASCAC,...YET the SUNYAC gets UCHC?

Until the NCAA loosens their grip and opens their wallet a "regional" will never work. The Top Eastern/Western team should play the lowest ranked team available to them, then the next...then the next...its not that broken of a system

Any bracket that includes four first round games "works." Can put those games anywhere you want; in this application those locations would be governed by the the regional split re: travel. It's elementary.

I agree with this 100%. With the current system you get odd matchups like last year where a #1 Adrian team had to play a top 5 team in UWSP while a lower ranked SNC team got to play Augsburg. SNC lost in the NCHA title game but was rewarded for being centrally located in the West region.
