NCAA Rankings?

Re: NCAA Rankings?

You're right !! The kids are home anyway. I'll bet that #14 insult ranking is already up on Emery's bulletin board.

Re: NCAA Rankings?

So, Trinity's 4 toughest games would be #5 Bowdoin 2X and #7 Williams 2X. Plattsburgh's 4 toughest would be #3 Oswego 2X, #2 Norwich and #7 Williams. Who is playing the BETTER ranked teams?

Playing the higher ranked team is sort of irrelevant if you lose to them -- I see only one "good" win (over Oswego) and losses to a couple of the lower-ranked teams (Castleton and Middlebury) for 3-4 record overall.

Re: NCAA Rankings?

Why is it an isult?? The TEAM made its own numbers, not the selection committee.....if anything its a slap in the face that they should have and need to work harder..

Re: NCAA Rankings?

Plattsburgh fans should remember the last time the team had this many losses....they were .500 in SUNYAC (or close to it), but ran the table in their non-conference schedule. I was sure they were toast due to the number of losses, but Josh Carey (I believe) correctly pointed out that Plattsburgh was a lock for the NCAAs despite their record (very similar to this year). They benefited from the brutal schedule when they won those games. This year they've lost more of them than they've won.

Below #6 or #7, ranking is irrelevant anyway. This team has known for awhile they made their own bed and need to win SUNYAC to be playing hockey after March 2nd...

How far do you think they would drop if they split or got swept this weekend If Norwich sweeps?

If Utica gets swept id say probably 4th if Norwich and Oswego sweep. If Utica splits and Norwich sweeps and Oswego splits id say third but then depends on Hobart. Both Utica and Norwich have two games vs ranked opponents. While Oswego has one of two and Hobart has one non ranked team left a loss there wouldn't hurt "as much" now.

Re: NCAA Rankings?

This is question for the knowledgeable posters, that have history information, please not a utica poster to respond. Since lets say year 2000 . Whats the reals number on atlarge berths each year on how many from East/West comparison. Thank you Frozenpuck

Sorry to break your rule but here is your answer, 3 at large will be available this year (all pool C so every team is eligible) Split will probably be 7 east 4 west (a slim chance at 8-3 if St. N crashes out of their tourney early and Hobart wins the ECAC West if an Oswego or Norwich loss in their tournaments and they need an at large)

So that makes Manhattanville a popular team this week!

Iguess you didnt read the question. The queation was since around yr 2000 till now , Whats the history of the # of available atlarge, not automatic bid, comparison since then between east/west.

East Teams, with the 3 general criteria (WIN, SOS, and RNK... not showing COP or H2H):

Code:
[u]NCAA	School WIN (rank)	SOS (rank)	RNK (rank)[/u]

1	Utica 0.826 (5)	0.556 (2)	0.800 (1)
2	Norwich 0.882 (1)	0.523 (8)	0.750 (t3)
3	Oswego 0.857 (2)	0.494 (14)	0.250 (14)
4	Hobart 0.792 (6)	0.546 (4)	0.550 (6)
5	Bowdoin 0.857 (3)	0.478 (15)	0.786 (2)
6	Babson 0.735 (8)	0.521 (9)	0.750 (t3)
7	Williams	0.675 (11)	0.526 (7)	0.333 (12)
8	Amherst 0.684 (10)	0.520 (10)	0.375 (11)
9	Neumann 0.642 (12)	0.550 (3)	0.450 (8)
10	UM-Boston	0.765 (7)	0.499 (13)	0.500 (7)
11	Trinity 0.639 (13)	0.502 (11)	0.688 (5)
12	Castleton	0.583 (15)	0.535 (5)	0.444 (9)
13	Manhattanville	0.591 (14)	0.527 (6)	0.200 (15)
14	Plattsburgh	0.705 (9)	0.502 (12)	0.429 (10)
15	Middlebury	0.546 (16)	0.562 (1)	0.292 (13)
16	Plymouth	0.846 (4)	0.450 (16)	0.000 (16)
(the number in parentheses is the relative ranking of these teams in the preceding stat)

Based on this page, which appears to be accurate (looking at Norwich's record, it IS accurate for their in-region DIII games, since we now have learned that non-region still doesn't count).

Conclusion: Plattsburgh rates no higher than 9 in any of these categories, and every team except one that is ahead of them in the NCAA rankings either beats them in SOS (traditionally the most heavily weighted), or beats them by a decent margin in BOTH of the other two. So honestly, I couldn't really justify with these numbers moving the Cards any higher than 11, ahead of Trinity, Castleton, and Man'ville (and there are counterarguments for all 3 of those teams, too).

The one exception, however, somewhat irks me. Sure, Oswego has the #2 WIN. But they are #14 on the list in both SOS (<.500!!!) and RNK. If you're going to weight WIN so heavily for them, why leave Plymouth at #16? I'm not saying Oswego isn't a great, very dangerous, team... but the numbers don't add up here. (Note: this is without evaluating COP or H2H)

They didn't count one of Oswego's games, they are 19-3 in region, with 2-3 against ranked opponents, they left off their win over plymouth, in fact they left off a few of Plymouth's games like one of their games with Castleton.

Yes, true but they did have wins over Williams and Middlebury in the second game along with the "good" win you mentioned over Oswego. That was a big win since Oswego was in first place until that night. I guess we will just wait to see how the ranking affects the team and what the outcome will be. There is still some hockey to play and it's time for us to support out team.

Don't have the numbers in front of me right now, and too busy watching hockey to look it up at the moment, but I will say this: Pool B, when it's been available, has always gone to the ECAC-W. But Pool C would probably either be balanced or slightly in favor of the West, because 7/4 and 8/3 have always been the splits, even when the West only had 2 AQs. But I'd have to take the time to look it up to know for sure. In total, Pool B + Pool C, undoubtedly in favor of the East.

All of that said, your stipulation that no Utica posters contribute to a discussion that has 0 possibility of creating a UC vs. the rest argument is downright offensive. Despite disagreements many posters have had here, anybody capable and willing to participate in discussion and debate about DIII hockey and anything (even remotely) related to it will be welcome on these boards. I personally would NEVER tell a poster they weren't allowed to participate in a discussion (and yes, I realize one of them did just that by stating that the Utica thread was a sacred place for UC fans only, but 2 wrongs don't make a right).
