NCAA Quarterfinal: RIT @ Minnesota

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: RIT @ Minnesota

I didn't see that. But I still feel like I have see more dangerou & dirty stuff from UND and UMD when they are losing & OSU this year. I was not the least bit surprised to read the RIT is the third most penalized team in the nation and the Gophers the least.

The CHA is a physical and quite chippy league to play in. You have to kinda play this way with teams like Mercyhurst and Syracuse. Cuse was particularly a very chippy team to play this year. Some of the players on my team bother me with some of their actions but unfortunately our league allows a fair amount of crap in games. We are not the dirtiest team you will play but we would get under your teams skin and won't let you push us around to say the least.

… and won't let you push us around to say the least.
I think RIT came out having heard all week about, "Minnesota this, and Minnesota that," and was determined to show they weren't going to be pushed around by big, bad Minnesota. So they brought a little extra zeal to every held puck around a goal early on. It seemed to climax when Brandt went hard to the goal, stopped on the whistle, and got punched in the face for her trouble. The refs evened up the penalties (shocker), but I think both the Gophers and the fans voiced enough displeasure that the Tigers realized if they instigated anything similar, they would be getting more minutes. After that, it settled down somewhat.

I think the RIT attitude early cost them a bit. When they had a chance to get back to even after Pannek got the boot, they committed an obvious penalty by running over Leveille. That'll get called every time, and it cost them two minutes of PP time when Minnesota was still trying to adjust to the loss of Pannek. That bought a little time, and the Tigers only got one PP goal and never could tie it up.

Oh definitely our team is going to see how games will be officiated since it is different for every league and correct themselves accordingly. All of us watching the game back here at RIT knew when we got a penalty we were going to pay and we did pretty much for the 1st and 2nd period which was what I got to watch before heading to our men's game.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: RIT @ Minnesota

c'mon, it is a common strategy in hockey
RIT knew they couldn't match the Gophers so they attempted to bring the Gophers down to their level

putting Brandt in the box for 2 minutes is a good exchange for them

gonna be fun watching Pannek for another 3 years ;)

Been to a few coaches things & heard several coaches from out East say how much more physical WCHA teams are. The next time I hear that I think I may kick the speaker in the crotch. St. Lawrence complained about Mankato before they played MN but they dished it out with a skill and expertise that comes from practice. RIT was a physical as any team I have seen in womens hockey. Not really dirty but they hit people, always left a parting shot & seemed to enjoy a lot of extra curriculars after the whistle.

MN looked tight for the first 5 minutes of the game but as soon as they scored you could see them open it up. Pannik took a checking from behind penalty. It was accidental as the RIT player turned into it but it was from behind. The constant physical thing seemed to irritate the Gophers but they kept the pressure on. Really not much to say except I was glad to see SHipper break out of her slump. MN's 6th goal was an empty netter & RIT's 2nd came after a blown icing call so really a 5-1 game, closer than most people projected. Looking forward to 3 great games next weekend.

Canadian coach, lots of Canadian players, they are taught from birth to play that way
Pannek is a stud, things like that are gonna happen
hence the Lorence incident

So my "bold" prediction didn't come true although the Gophers definitely looked like they were easily on pace to score 10 goals. The two game misconducts certainly affected the lineup or else I'm sure they would have scored 10 goals.

RIT has never been afraid of taking penalties. Their coach is a very aggressive person who coaches the same way. However in this game Minnesota had 36 minutes compared to 14 for RIT so which team played out of character?!

Yes, Minnesota had a lot more penalty time. However, if you look at individual calls, it was 7 for RIT and 5 for MN.

I knew someone would say someting about that. Strictly speaking it was 7 for each team. My point was the nature of the calls was out of character for the Gophers. Had it been the other way around nobody would have been surprised.

Having watched WCHA crews skate around looking like they had dinner reservations and were trying to hurry the game along all season, I have to say that I was surprised. I haven't seen a linesman call a penalty in years, so for one to come up with something on a player who wasn't even on the ice …

Difference between "calls" and "penalties". The misconducts were automatic, not separate calls by the officials.

That said, point made -- it was certainly not expected behavior by the hosts.

Meghan Lorence did not play the last shift of the first period. So it's still a mystery what she did and when. It would seem it did not happen at the end of the period or it was not Meghan Lorence who committed the penalty.
