NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Elmira is 1 - 2 lifetime against Norwich, the last victory (5-4) coming in 1976 when the Cadets were part of the, you guessed it, ECAC/West

1-7 was the 03/04 T/A tourney. In 04/05 I made the trip during which EC lost in OT 3-4. Lake Fornax was the Western participant.

My wife's birthday is this weekend. Hmmmm .... completely destroy my marriage, and forego $** for the next two years, or attend a musical and smile alot? Unfortunately ... no trip for me :=[ (Darn compromises)

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

The doors and ticket sales open at 6 and the game starts at 7.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

standing room tickets are on sale on line, some seats may be available at the ticket booth, depending on how many Elmira fans make the trip. Our students are on break so we should be fine. I would get there early and get in line.

the game will be video streamed live by NSN at no charge compliments of Norwich University.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Elmira's win over Oswego and tie with Plattsburgh are very impressive. I consider these teams in the top 4 or 5 in the east. It is a long season and they did stumble a little toward the end but there overall record is very impressive. Darcy Vallencort, Rusty Masters, and Kevin Willer all have excellent stats. Norwich may be a slight favorite for the game but in these one game series anything can happen. I am also concerned how Elmira blitzed Curry in the first period of play last night. Elmira will be a very difficult game for Norwich.

Of all the quarterfinal games I thought Norwich has the toughest game after Plattsburgh/Middlebury which is a toss up in my book. I haven't seen Elmira play having only read what others have observed. The only thing I will predict is there will be a whole lot more people at this game then at the Curry game. If Elmira is anthing like the ECAC East teams the large crowd will get them more up for the game.

Agreed..

While Elmira was ranked lower than Bowdoin, which is the reason Norwich drew Elmira/Curry and Oswego drew Bowdoin, I'd much rather see Bowdoin invade the Campus Center at Oswego than Elmira.

No disrespect intended for Bowdoin...

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Elmira usually averages 1500 or so and can get to the 2000's or near it for bigger games.

Wednesday night was a tough draw against a no name team like Curry. Granted it was an NCAA game but people still A. probably didn't know about it since Elmira lost to Manhattanville B. It wasn't a recognizable team. C. It was a weekday game.

Still elbo reported 1100 being there...I guesstimated 800ish from the webcast. It was a pretty loud crowd so Elmira is definitely used to playing in front of large crowds.

Norwich has won the last two games in this series. They were expected to play each other last year but EC lost to Gustavus in the first round of the Times Argus.

That was one of the worst games I watched in the 4 years that Albert was there.

I remember being at the Plattsburgh game, which was a 4pm game. Paid attendance, per collegehockeystats, was 1006... but I estimated that crowd to be 600 max.

It's all in the scheduling of the games. If it's consistent with the normal scheduling, people will show up. Anomalies like a Saturday afternoon or a weekday, not so much. I remember seeing people pulling into the Domes as we were leaving, as if they were there for a 7pm game.

That web cast last night was not good at all. No announcers, one camera, and it did not do much to make the barn look good.

Baby steps Charlie...Baby Steps;)

At least the game was free for the first time this year making an NCAA Play-In game available for the entire country to see.

I agree that it would be nice to have audio to go along with the video feed and I know that Elmira is working on that for next season.

Lets also remember that Elmira doesn't have a communications program like Oswego does to be able to put on a grand production like they do.

There is definitely room for improvement but I dont think we should complain about being able to see a D-III hockey game for free on the internet. Beggers can't be choosers

Elmira doesn't even have a radio crew for their games so they don't have the luxury of being able to pipe that in with the video feed.

I'm more excited about the fact that D-III fans will be able to watch EVERY NCAA quarterfinal game this weekend for free for the first time ever IIRC.

Great news for D-III and I hope teams and schools continue to invest in bringing this type of coverage and improving on it.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

EC was offered free professional help take their video effort up several notches 4 yrs ago...3 yrs ago...2 yrs ago... Finally gave up...

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

I understand and respect PrezdeJohnson09's more experienced opinion and where he is coming from with baby steps expectations from the NCAA with regards to broadcasting. But with all due respect, isn't there more at stake here than just a game(s)?

The video of the Elmira game seem to say that the NCAA (and Fast Hockey vendor) did as little as possible to fulfill their stated video obligation to Div III Hockey. But heck, no skin off the NCAA's nose but accordingly their broadcast did Elmira-the host school--a disservice with their sky cam approach and no audio.

I ended up watching an excellent video stream of the Gustavus/St.Thomas game. A first class job.:)

And why is this more than baby steps for the NCAA? It seems that the sloppy execution of any facet of an NCAA Championship tournament doesn't really reflect on the NCAA "brand" as much as it does on "the brand" of the host member school and/or venue. But if NCAA is going to demand ownership of the broadcast rights, or even just the pop corn concession there should be a minimum level of expectation from the NCAA that it will be both managed and executed correctly.

And how about a kid watching at home last night who might be interested in playing Division III hockey at Elmira? Technology has given coaches in smaller schools new leverage in showcasing their program--just as the poorly executed use of technology can be a turn off to a prospective player. Elmira deserved better from the NCAA to at least help them manage the media product that they broadcasted.

You bet, I am a bias Norwich alum/fan. But when I put myself in the place of a prospective Cadet player, I sense after watching a NSN Hockey video stream from "The Berg"-- that ever player prospect must at least think--"Now that Norwich program is all about commitment!" (...although I hear that the hot dogs need work):p

On a related subject, the current Norwich Record (Alumni Magazine) has an indepth interview with George Commo--"The voice of Cadet hockey!" If you are interested here is a link to a pdf file of that publication. You will find the interview with "Puck Voice" on page 8.

George has done such a professional job of showcasing our entire program for students, alumni, friends and fans of Cadet hockey. Thanks George! Old Rook NU'66

Roll on Cadets!

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: Elmira @ Norwich Saturday 3/13

Given the emphasis placed on hockey (men's and women's) at Elmira, you would think it would get more attention. It doesn't have to cost much or take that much effort or training to put on a much better product. Maybe peer pressure will make something happen.

As for the organization we love to hate, the only role the NCAA has in the early rounds is to grant permission for the webcast...CBS gets involved and has to sign-off if the webcast also gets transmitted on a local cable channel.
