NCAA Hockey as part of the Winter Classic

Re: NCAA Hockey as part of the Winter Classic

The reasoning is "get 20 guys to play and it's ONLY $500 each to play a game at fenway". :p

And the whole "I got to play at Fenway" deal.

I have to admit, while I didn't play in the poster's game at DU (I was a photographer) it was pretty cool to get on the ice/etc, and see the arena/go behind the scenes in the locker rooms.

Re: NCAA Hockey as part of the Winter Classic

According to Kevin Paul Dupont in this morning's Boston Globe the 1/1/11 Winter Classic game will be at Yankee Stadium between Rangers and Capitals.

His reports are usually authoritative.

I doubt that. The inaugural Yankee bowl is scheduled to take place on 12/29/2010. So that would not give much time for set up. They could do the game though at Citi field or they could somehow try to get the Big East 4th(although they will probably try and get either Rutgers or UCONN for inaugural) and Big 12 7th to agree to move it which I doubt they would.

They absolutely will not move the bowl. And there's no way, unless they agree to move the bowl game to after New Year's and take the rink down or something like that, but that again is an unlikely scenario. The only other option seems to be Citi Field which would royally suck. Nice park, but the area is such a wasteland that it'd detract from the event. Only other choice there would be to make the bowl game earlier, as in the 20th or something and allow 10 days for the rink. Even then, that would be cutting it close and I doubt they want to play that bowl on December 20th.

They've already discussed the dilemma in trying to hold it in Yankee Stadium while it is hosting a bowl game at the end of December. Anyone trying to resurrect that speculation is obviously not paying attention, or not very knowledgeable.

The Big East has too much stake in that bowl becoming successful. It won't happen.

Re: NCAA Hockey as part of the Winter Classic

It wouldn't get near the national play that some of the others might, but around here and Ohio State - Michigan / Wings - Jackets doubleheader at Ohio Stadium would be a sight to behold.

Because the South Bronx is such a great area

Only other options for NYC area are new Giants Stadium which seems unlikely and Rutgers Stadium which is also unlikely since it is a good distance from the city. I think Minneapolis, Denver, or DC make the most sense for next years Winter Classic with the first two being able to also have outdoor college hockey games.

FYI: Ice sales booming.....Avon Old Farms vs Taft (A couple of parents ponied up $30K for this one.(played before Classic)) ........ St. Sebastians vs Belmont Hill (1/5/10)....Schools sold tickets and paid $20K for the ice.

I heard that they are sellling public skating type slots along with all the money making vending site sales. WOW.

I'm Minneapolis or Denver seem more likely to me.. I still question if DC is too far south for this to happen.... The Canadian teams must be drooling over the prospect of hosting the winter classic as well, in which case I wonder if they would tie in some major junior and Canadian college games.

The real question is how far south can you go for this? How will the rink hold up in the (potentially) warmer weather.

Another issue that hovers around here is the eventuality that a game will get canceled due to the weather. A harder snow may be disappointing but a harder rain will cause a postponement or cancellation.

Re: NCAA Hockey as part of the Winter Classic

TSN reported last year the candidate sites for 2010 were:

Las Vegas Strip (???)
Yankee Stadium
Rose Bowl
National's Park/FedEx/RFK
Comerica Park
Fenway

One has to assume the parks that weren't picked last year are candidates for this year. Citi doesn't make any sense to me, if you have to wait a year to do Yankee Stadium then wait a year instead of just moving it to a lesser venue.

Rumors around DC are flying about Caps v Rangers @ Yankee Stadium. The Yankee Bowl is not set firmly at December 29, it's a tentative date, so it could be moved, but it seems doubtful it could be moved far enough to put up a hockey rink.

In DC RFK and Nationals Park make sense (FedEx would mean scheduling multiple Skins away games) but RFK isn't a great venue and I feel like the NHL is ready to move back to a football stadium for next year.

Comerica could certainly draw a good college game but it seems odd to have the Wings in the classic again so soon.

I'm not sure how a college game would fair at a place like the Rose Bowl... unless we invite USC!

I'm also not sure I'd want a winter classic in warm weather.. even if you can make the rink work, I just don't see the same appeal without people in hats and sweaters freezing their butts off, it's part of the fun!
