NCAA Hockey - 2023/24 **Insert Witty Tagline**

Ok I saw that Matt Thomas got hired at RIT (not too surprising) but Shyiak is the coach at NMU? WTF? Is every C-tier D1 school trotting out an old UAA coach?

Tennessee State is supposed to start this year at the varsity level. The school said they didn’t have money, but the coach started a fundraising effort. There still seems to be a lot of secrecy surrounding the program, but it did come out that they will host BU in their first ever game at Bridgestone Arena this October. We’ll see where this goes, but it would be great if they can actually get it off the ground.

TSU, Lindenwood, UAA, UAF, LIU, and Stonehill. I know the latter are still aiming for the AHA, but there’s a conference. And a close partner for UAH to resurrect with conference affiliation.

I just can't help it:

I'm definitely rooting for TSU to succeed - shame UAH (2 hrs away) isn't there any more....

Heard they just let the contract run out and then moved on. Hired someone with experience on the coaching staff already, and did well at Lindenwood.

Interesting that no one caught it on the MTU employment page, but no one was probably expecting to need to look there this spring anyway.
Several people over in Facebook Land seemed to believe Joe was signed through '26. So that's why I was so "WTF?" on this one.

And if they did just want to let the contract run out and move on to someone new, why not get out ahead and make a comment on why Joe was not coming back. It's just a simple blurb in a press release thanking him for his time with the program, but they feel that it's better to head in a different direction.

This is a VERY odd move from our current PoV on all this.

A certain disgruntled former Husky has been quick to extend his congrats to Muckalt. "Great to see the program back in good hands", lmfao.

He was going into the last year of his deal without an extension, which they were supposedly working on; rumor was he wanted 2 more years. Sounds like he was blindsided when he walked into what turned out to be his exit interview. In fact, he apparently found out 20 minutes before the public did.

So, all sorts of stuff is flying around regarding several recent players being unhappy with Joe's *ahem* "old school" coaching style/tactics. Unfortunately, with Joe's history of controversy it's entirely believable, and I'm guessing AD Sanregret decided it was time to move on sooner rather than later. It's likely recruiting was impacted (word gets around quickly in recruiting circles), and there's also speculation that former star recruit Kyle Kukkonen transferred to WI at least in part because he couldn't deal with Joe's coaching anymore.

At any rate, I consider Muckalt a Pearson protégé through and through. We might like the results he gets, but we may not necessarily be too fond of the guy. I expect an up-tempo offensive scheme similar to what he and Pearson ran during his old boss' most successful years here. OTOH, I'm almost positive we will be back to stockpiling recruits in short order, and joining in on tampering with other teams' top transfer prospects. If we're lucky, maybe he'll even get NIL going at Tech.
