NCAA Frozen Four: UMD vs. Minnesota -- the Sibling Rivalry

Re: NCAA Frozen Four: UMD vs. Minnesota -- the Sibling Rivalry

Blais scores her second on a feed from Friddy! UMD up 3-1 with under a minute to go in the second. :D
This was a killer. You get back into the game late in the 2nd...then back to a two goal deficit just a few seconds later. :(

FINALLY -- I'm able to post again after 50+ hours of being in a read-only state. That said, I'm going to limit my comments about the game. I'm disappointed but at the same time glad the Gophers made it as far as they did. Rather, here are the pertinent links that I'm aware of.

-- Box Score
-- Gophers game recap -- Gophers' Run Ends in Frozen Four Semifinals
-- Bulldogs game recap - Bulldogs Will Play In Sixth NCAA Title Game Sunday After 3-2 Win Over Minnesota
-- Star Tribune (Twin Cities) - UMD beats No. 1 rival, will go for 5th NCAA title
-- Duluth News Tribune - Blais, Fridfinnson lead Bulldogs past Gophers

Not a good day for the Gophers shooting the puck. They had maybe 6 hard shots from 15-25 feet that went over the crossbar, and maybe 3 times that number got blocked and never reached the net. When your shots are either off target or they get blocked, you're not going to get many rebound opportunities...give a lot of credit to UMD, not just their D but also to the forwards who helped keep most of Minnesota's scoring chances to the outside or from long range. I also liked the way the Bulldog's D were often able to make a quick, short pass to a supporting forward to break out of their zone and escape Minnesota's pressure, which at times was relentless.

As disappointing as the result was, you can't fault the Gophers for a lack of effort. They gave it their all, and never gave up. Congrats to the entire team on a fine season, and best of luck to all the graduating seniors.

I thought the Gophers played about as good as we could play; tonight, it just wasn't good enough. Congratulations and best of luck to two very deserving finalists, UMD and Cornell.

I enjoyed some great hockey and the great atmosphere during the FF semifinals. Also had a great time meeting a few of the forums true stalwarts for the first time...including DC78-82, IceIsNice, and the one, the only dedicated, hard working purveyor of commitment infotainment as well as Whoopie Pie King, Hux. Extremely nice to meet you all. Hope we can meet again during future hockey get togethers. DC...thanks a million for that intro to the Wildcats Patty Kaz finalist...enjoyed that a lot. A real pleasure meeting everyone it was.

Strangely, I failed to make the acquaintance of any of my good UMD fan friends.

Sorry, I was too busy watching the Bulldogs win. And I'll probably be pretty busy on Sunday too. Ooooh... Sunday...yeah, right. You won't be using that ticket, will you?

No...probably not. No need for an apology. Honestly, it doesn't make any difference where you're concerned. I would have no interest in meeting you even if I were there.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four: UMD vs. Minnesota -- the Sibling Rivalry

BULLDOGS WIN IT 3-2 and play Cornell for their fifth national title on Sunday!! :D :D

(And P.S. to Gopher fans...these games against you guys have been the best of the season by far.)
I don't know Joe, after all your trash talk to suddenly turn civil seems to be going against form.

But, thanks, I guess. General kudos in particular to the UMD band but also to UMD fans in attendance. And congratulations to the UMD team, well played.

Re: NCAA Frozen Four: UMD vs. Minnesota -- the Sibling Rivalry

Neither the Dogs nor the Gophers fielded their most talented teams this season, but it certainly was one of the most hotly contested series between them ever!! I thought in this game every inch was fought for hard by each team, no lack of heart, skill or desire either way. Clearly a game that could have gone either way.

It seems that Cornell may have a hard time with the physical, solid forechecking game that both UM and UMD brought/bring to the ice this season. And, it would have been the case regardless of which MN team had won.

Nice season Gophers & Gopher fans . . . See ya'll again next fall!!

It turns out, I get better pictures when UMD isn't the team playing, and I'm not getting caught up in the game :D

I didn't get that impression at all while watching periods 2 and 3 of the Mercyhurst / Cornell semi. I think as far as skaters go, Cornell will go toe to toe with UMD...at worst. Cornell looked like an excellent team to me.

My guess is it comes down to which stopper outplays her counterpart. I thought that was a pretty big factor in the Gopher / Bulldog semi outcome.

Agree. Entertaining games yesterday!

Re: NCAA Frozen Four: UMD vs. Minnesota -- the Sibling Rivalry

I'd love to see the game stat sheet and see how many shots UMD blocked (unless that info is online somewhere in one of the game stories...)

Officially UMD blocked 19 of Minnesota's 63 attempts. Minnesota only had 5 blocks on UMD's 37 attempts.

That's telling considering that Minnesota has the bigger "trees" to shoot through.
