NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Plus they already cleared space in the trophy case for another national championship trophy and it would be a real hassle to have to go back and rearrange everything.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Advantage UMD:

1.) Defense
2.) Forecheck (generally a more contact oriented team)
3.) Speed
Again, watching Cornell for two periods in the first semi, I'm not real convinced UMD will have a clear advantage, if any, in any of these categories.

Cornell figures to be fighting the nerves more than UMD. If The Big Red can score first that would help them a bunch.

The Big Red would be happy make this the centerpiece of their 2010 trophy case between the ECAC RS Title and the ECAC Championship Trophy. :D

3.) Speed
4.) Coaching
5.) Experience with big game (individuals & program)
6.) Experience with big game (individuals & program)
7.) Experience with big game (individuals & program)
8.) Fan support (as in number in attendance)/band
Obviously I've been very impressed by UMD over the past few months. But Cornell has quickly made a believer out of me. UMD has some very fast players. Cornell doesn't seem that fazed by fast opponents, because they did just fine against the speed offered by both Harvard and Mercyhurst. Having seen Derraugh's team in action and heard him speak, I now understand why they are suddenly getting the big time recruits. Some of their breakouts from their zone and through center were so smooth they were just plain fun to watch. You are right about their lack of big game experience, but it hasn't seemed to hurt them so far. As for fan support, if they can hang around, I suspect they will get all of the neutral fans on their side. How much noise that will account for remains to be seen. Their potential Achilles heel is their lack of depth; UMD is actually the "deep" team in this match up. If Fortino can't play or is hampered, that would be a huge blow.

Just add a plaque honoring the Chancellor for her years of support above and beyond -- at times, way beyond.;)

I predict that Katie Wilson's team will win. What I don't know is what number she'll be wearing as she celebrates.:D

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

For the first time all season, UMD is indeed the deeper team, but four 1:45 minute tv timeouts a period will favor the Big Red. UMD has experience, but they also have nine freshmen and quite a few of them were in tears yesterday. Cornell is playing fearless, and what they don't know about title games won't hurt them. It will be a great game no matter what, and hats off to two teams that have exceeded expectations!

UMD blew off the Kaz? Frig that!!!!

Hope you get blown out!!!

Go Big Red!!!

Anonymous neg-repper, thank you! I sign my neg reps!

Must be a UMD fan, or maybe even the coach who had the classless act of not sending her team to the Kaz brunch

but what about:
<table><tr><td></td><td>Cornell</td><td> UMD</td></tr><tr><td>Goals Allowed/Game</td><td>1.71</td><td>2.02</td></tr><tr><td>PP Pct.</td><td>20,9</td><td>15.7</td></tr><tr><td>PK Pct.</td><td>93.5</td><td>89.1</td></tr></table>

Advantage Cornell on all counts!

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

I thought about catching a flight out to Minneapolis to join my family for the championship but decided I had to much going on in single weekend. At least I get to watch the game on TV.
GO BIG RED!!

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Shannon Miller 260-70-29
Doug Derraugh 37-72-9

A bunch of players who won in 2008...

Those plus the fan support that UMD teams have thrived off of in the big situations.. and maybe some WCHA fans as well who want to keep the championship in the WCHA. I'm probably just way overconfident (and won't see replies of this until tomorrow evening when I get home) but UMD by 3.

You could have said the same about Sisti's coaching record against Doug's. Mercyhurst's fans were just as overconfident. I would also say I missed my Harvard-Cornell prediction by at least three goals too (thinking it would be at worst a one goal game in Cornell's favor). They DESTROYED a GOOD Harvard team. They went 2-0-1 against that team. Cornell is really, really good.

Re: overall records ----Please, it was much harder to build a contender from a 4-win Ivy program with no scholarships than it was for Miller at UMD.

I agree with what DIGDOGS and ARM have said. Looking forward to a good game.

I won't be able to watch it live :( , but I'll check it out on DVR when I get back home, and then we'll see.

Yeah, you're MOST DEFINITELY overconfident.

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

Staying South of the City after this game....the road rage back to Duluth is likely to take collateral damage.

Go Big Red!

Re: NCAA Championship Game: UMD Bulldogs vs. Cornell Big Red

On another thread I predicted that Cornell would win their semi-final game by one goal and the final by two. No reason to change now.
