NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

Merrimack's updated rink wouldn't be a bad place either.
No thank you, and it's only about 20 minutes from here. Not fit for a championship game. Providence has a better shot with their recent overhaul, though parking could be an issue with an event that large, also not in a great neighborhood. Despite not having a women's team Lowell would be clever to submit a bid for the Tsongas Center.

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

Why would the Blues be interested in this? They were, indeed, a large part of the reason that the 2007 men's Frozen Four drew well among locals; they were easily one of the two most involved NHL teams in that regard, along with the Capitals when it was in Washington.

But an enormous part of that marketing effort was them touting their own draft picks. They also got very lucky in that three of them (Oshie; Bishop; Turek) out of four (Erik Johnson didn't) actually made it to the Frozen Four. This hook does not exist with regards to the women's Frozen Four.
Most of the tickets were sold long before anyone knew who the participating teams were. At that point tickets in the priority and general lotteries had to be purchased almost a year in advance. Although very few applications were rejected, the tickets allotted to the public lotteries did sell out at the time of the initial drawing. Those fans would not have made the ticket purchase solely to see the draft picks. The draftees' participation would have been just too speculative.

I wasn't aware of the marketing campaign you refer to. That's very interesting to hear; I appreciate that you took the time to post that. But did they really market the draft picks a year in advance? If so, kudos to them for a creative, successful approach. But I have to wonder if the campaign was done closer to tournament time, in order to enhance the event itself -- as opposed to trying to sell tickets.

Finally, while I'm sure that many of the locals were excited to see the future Blues play, I don't recall any huge buzz occurring whenever one of the three players in question touched the puck.

The event wouldn't be held in the same building the Blues play in.
Correct, but again I'm going to agree with Hux, and will comment further below:

It's called community outreach.
Absolutely.

I'm guessing the Blues organization is well connected to local youth hockey and other community groups. As another NHL example, the Columbus Blue Jackets operate a set of suburban rinks -- The Chillers -- as well as the practice facility connected to Nationwide Arena. I believe they also sponsor and work with the CCYHA, the Columbus Chill Youth Hockey Association. (Note that that the name derives from the Columbus Chill, the minor league hockey club that preceded the CBJ.) In other words, there's extensive outreach. While the particulars undoubtedly vary, I'm sure the Blues' outreach is similarly extensive.

BTW, congratulations to all of the successful applicants!

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

I feel like it would make more sense to just do one or two sites that host the women's Frozen Four every year and build a week or weekend long youth festival around it, like how baseball and softball does it with the college world series. Maybe just transfer it back and forth between Boston and Minneapolis every year. Some place that has the facilities to host youth girls tournaments along with the FF. Make it bigger than just college women's hockey; promote the growth of the sport. Or dare I say, try to get USA Hockey more involved with it

I... don't hate this idea.

During the F4 in Boston in 2009 there was a noticeable lack of youth hockey players/parents in the stands. Why? Because the state tournament was going on 40 miles away in Marlborough. After that event I proposed to the powers that be in Mass Hockey that the tournament be changed so that it did not run up against college tournaments.

While States for the U16s and 19s eventually went to a November date, there are still the other age groups that hold their tournaments in mid to late March. Additionally, you run up against tryouts for the NDCs, or team tryouts, or the start of spring sports etc. etc. etc. making it difficult to get that segment of potential fans into a building for a weekend. It takes a monumental effort to move mountains and adjust schedules to accommodate events such as the F4. It doesn't seem that difficult a thing to do, but trying to get several bodies to coordinate such an endeavor generally gets shot down.

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

University of Wisconsin somehow lands a bid to host a men's Frozen Four...in Tampa, but won't/can't host a women's Frozen Four. I understand the logistical issues, but it's comical that Madison hasn't seen a Frozen Four yet.

In the years that Ridder is the venue, does it also host the WCHAs? Must be nice to not to have to travel at all for the entire playoffs/tournaments.

I suspect Badgers & Bulldogs fans wouldn't be too thrilled with the Gophers getting the same.
Long-time Wisconsin fans have watched their team kick the Gophers around in Ridder too many times to worry about it too much. UMD used to complain, but given it won both tournaments in Ridder in 2010 and UM won both in AMSOIL in 2012, I think the Bulldogs are starting to realize that it is more about how you play than where you play.

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

A new power in still a relatively young NCAA sport, who already settled with NCAA, doesn't get one, yet ridder gets two? After just having one. What am I missing?

Ridder bids must have been better in the eyes of the NCAA.

Hotel rooms, a major airport, and anything to do on the off-day is my guess.

Settlement with the NCAA was more than a little contentious plus there still are all those hostile and abusive images throughout the arena. Just sayin...
