NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

I'm new here!

Ohh...ok. ARM mentions that there was "discussion" about UND dropping the nickname and that the issue of the images in the arena was definately part of said discussion. That is an executive summary of what was a long and protracted battle with the NCAA over the nickname. Of note is that the original donation by Ralph Engelstad for the arena had the stipulation that the University could not drop the nickname. That was interesting because there was some interest back then from the school administration to drop the nickname. Could be why there are so many indian heads all over the arena and that they were put in so as to make it very difficult to remove them.

If you care to and have nothing better to do, do a search on Ralph Engelsted. You will find he is an interesting character to say the least.

Don't know if this is urban legend but I was told that RE left an extra endowment of $30million to only be used to demolish the arena if the NCAA forced the school to change their name.

Amazing if true.

Yes... "Interesting".

What folks in the East might find interesting is that he and his wife also donated $13,500,000 to build another "Ralph Engelstad Arena" in nearby Thief River Falls, MN where Mr. Engelstad was born and raised. Since "hostile" images are no where to be seen - it's the home of the TRF boys and girls high school teams - maybe UND could host the tournament there instead of at "The Ralph"?

(kind of half-joking here, as the town is located somewhere "in the Hinterlands" of NW Minnesota, where the temps never get above freezing ;))

Regarding North Dakota's exclusion:

This has a ring of truth to it.

Women's Selections: Four applications, Four tournaments. One school wins twice, while another is closed out? Not a smoking gun by any means, but it seems a little odd.

Men's Selections: One ND gets to host on campus, while another ND does not. Why? Because Fargo is so much more accessible than Grand Forks? And because South Bend is self-evidently convenient for all? Yeah, right.

Granted, North Dakota may have applied only for Fargo on the Men's side. Or, the Fargo facility could simply have been deemed to be a more appropriate size. So again, no smoking gun. But when you look at these decisions as parts of the same package, it certainly feels like a message is being sent.

The men put in a bid for both REA and Fargo, because of the NCAA preference to not have any team host a regional. No one else in the region put in a non-home ice bid hence the Fargo selection

The NCAA has also told the GFHerald that the women's snub was due to the Ralph being too big for a women's final four although I'm skeptical because of Lindenwood's capacity and location....

Perhaps. But then how does Notre Dame succeed with a Home Ice bid for regionals? Strictly by default? This actually adds to the intrigue rather than solving things. The Ralph had 2 live bids and went 0 for 2. Thanks for posting the info, BTW.

Again, it's tough to tell what's real here and what's window dressing. But given that Mariucci has hosted a Women's FF, it's a little hard to accept that the Ralph is rendered absolutely ineligible for reasons of size alone. Or perhaps the NCAA is now on the record as to the max size that should be used for the FF, and Mariucci is also disqualified from making future bids.

Guess we'll never know definitively, and maybe that's just as well...:o

My whole thing is why make the Ralph a finalist if you're just going to screw them for having an arena that's too big? They should have just crossed them off the list before even naming them. Guess UND should have put the high school arena in town in their bid. That'd meet their so-called "seating maximum requirements."

And Lindenwood's arena? At 9000 seating? Apparently that's okay because according to the NCAA, they are "excited about the backing of the St Louis Sports Commission."

Okay, then.

Re: NCAA Announces Host Site Finalists

The University of North Dakota needs to adopt a new logo and then we can probably all move on.

*FYP

If UND can't get a bid for a Frozen Four because their arena is too big, as per the NCAA, getting a generic animal rodent mascot isn't going to matter.

Even so, it couldn't hurt to resurrect the flickertail.
