5-1 Mercyhurst. Thats my prediction.

The Lakers weren't able to beat Cornell by 4 goals coming out of the gate, so I doubt that they do so now. My guess is that the Big Red score more than once.

I think it will be closer than that. Watched both games against Mercyhurst in Ithaca and I think Cornell is more than capable of upsetting the apple cart for Mercyhurst.

Re: National Semifinal: Cornell vs. Mercyhurst

In the first two games in Ithaca, Mercyhurst scored on pretty obvious defensive breakdowns by Cornell. It was after that weekend that I stated Cornell should finish in the top four in the ECAC. Mostly because I was pleasantly supprised with how well Cornell was able to skate with Mercyhurst.

As the season has progressed, Cornell has done a much better job of preventing the defensive breakdowns, for the most part, that Mercyhurst was able to Capitalize on. Cornell offense has improved significantly since that first weekend as well.

What? Them there is fightin' words!!!

I'm honestly flying out with cautious optimism. Just beyond honest, I didn't show up for the B.U. game feeling this tentative, but I fully believe and expect Cornell to pose one heck of a challenge. But as I've always told my kids, if anyone could do it it wouldn't be special.

That said, while the Laker forwards have received very well deserved kudos all year, the Laker blueline and goaltending have also been very strong and highly underrated IMHO.

Yes they are in fact they showed they were the best all season long.
However, after hearing they practiced twice a day for the weeks leading up to the CHA Tourney it was obvious in their game against Syracuse that fatigue was a factor especially in the third period in that game almost losing as a result.
If they continue the same practice routine (which I don't think they need at this point in the season) fatigue will again factor in the result of this match against a much better (than Syracuse) Cornell squad with nothing to lose.

Prediction 3-2 (OT) in favor of the Lakers.:)

Cornell 4-3 in an upset that nobody but me sees coming. You heard it here first. :D

Re: National Semifinal: Cornell vs. Mercyhurst

I don't think Cornell has enough 'big game' experience to pull off that upset...their goaltender might have to pull off a 2008 Kim Martin job to win.

Neither did BC on the road against Dartmouth in '07, a very deep offensive team. Based on their record, the Lakers have to be the favorite, not just in this game, but to win it all. However, I expect this game to be much more competitive than say BU@Mercyhurst. I don't buy the LakersFan math that shows MC winning 80-something % of the time. Something on the order of 60 % sounds closer to me. Ice' might be right that the Lakers are underrated defensively, but Cornell's goalie has slightly better numbers, not only in Save % but in GAA. I think it'll be a fun game to watch.

Re: National Semifinal: Cornell vs. Mercyhurst

Let me think of the biggest upsets in NCAA history based purely on seed. The parentheticals contain a description of the tourney experience of the team pulling the upset.

2001 4 SLU over 1 Dartmouth (big-game experience NONE)
2002 4 Brown over 1 Minnesota (big-game experience 2000 national tourney)
2005 SLU over 2 UMD (lost in 2004 national semi)
2006 4 Minnesota over 1 UNH (two-time defending national champion)
2007 BC over 3 Dartmouth (NONE)
2007 UMD over 2 Mercyhurst (lost in 2005,2006 ncaa quarters)
2008 Wisconsin over 1 Harvard (two-time defending national champion)

So I don't think there's a whole lot to see here. Did 2007 BC or UMD have "big-game experience"? UMD hadn't made the Frozen Four since 2003 at that point.

Anyway, you could've made the same argument against Cornell winning the ECAC regular season title, the ECAC postseason title, and beating Harvard in the NCAA quarters.

I could see it happen as I suggested that if Mercy runs into a fatigue issue it could happen. The key to any upset is goaltending and Cornell has one of the best. If A.M. is on her game I can envision an upset. I dont think this will be a blowout by any means.
