National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Hey, I know you are just trying to be funny, but Yanni kicks arse.

Yanni may make enjoyable music now and then, but there's nothing about his style of music that evokes the words "kick arse."

Also, i see you're still going through your 20-something Anglophile phase. I thought you folks were Germanic descent up there.

The Top Selling Music Videos of ALL-TIME

1. Michael Jackson's - "Thriller"

2. Yanni's - "Yanni Live at the Acropolis"

Whether you like him or not, you gotta respect THAT!!!

If Yanni was the ONLY musician we could claim, then maybe it'd be easier to joke about, but he's not.

Same as if our Bass Fishing Natl Title or our Dance Team Natl and World Titles or our Quiz Bowl Natl Titles or our Chess Natl Title or our Solar Rayce Car Natl and World Titles were the only Natl Titles we could claim, THEN it would be easy to poke fun at all of those things. But they are just IN ADDITION to Natl Titles in all 4 of the major sports, football, baseball, hockey and basketball, along with wrestling, golf and track and women's hockey as well.
.
.
.

Now here is hoping we can add one more Natl Title to the Trophy case tonight!!!

It's been pretty funny seeing Minnesotans work so hard to boast about what their state has contributed to our country and to the world, as they (some of them) always seem to want to do, while Union's fans have been graciously resisting the urge point out a thing or two New Yorkers have accomplished over the years.

In our defense Burd, we have no homegrown talent on our hockey team, so we have to dig extra deep to find something to brag about.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Without the sacrifice of the 1st Minnesota, the Confederates would have taken the high ground on Cemetary Hill, and the outcome of Getysburg would have likely been very different. The 1st Minnesota took over 80% casualties while holding off the confederate advance as they were outnumbered 5-to-1. They filled a big hole in the Union's defensive line and held out until reinforcements arrived.

If the Union had lost at Getysburg, there was nothing between Lee's army and Washington DC. Not to mention, with a decisive victory in the North, the Confederates would have likely received the aid from Europe they were lookong for.

I'd say their regiment's sacrifice was a pretty significant factor in the battle, and thus the war.

Eh it was ok .. Vermont was there to save the day.

On the morning of July 3, members of the 16th regiment were stationed as pickets forward of Cemetery Hill. In the afternoon, after a two-hour artillery duel, Confederate General Robert E. Lee launched what has become known Pickett's Charge. The Vermont pickets were withdrawn, and as the Confederates approached Cemetery Hill, the three Vermont regiments flanked the Confederate troops first flanking Pickett's division by wheeling two units to the right and then doing the same to two detached Confederate brigades by wheeling two regiments to the left.[1] Stannard's brigade inflicted severe casualties on the advancing Confederate regiments and forcing some of Pickett's men to redeploy covering their right flank. History recalls this battle as the high-water mark of the Confederacy. Three years later, at St. Albans, Vermont, General George G. Meade, commanding the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg, said "there was no individual body of men who rendered greater service at a critical moment than the comparatively raw troops commanded by General Stannard."[1]

Pickett's charge was on the 3rd and final day of the battle. On the second day of the battle, the 1st Minnesota filled the gap on Cemetary Hill after Dan Sickles moved his troops forward and out of position. Had the 1st Minnesota not held the gap, and the 20th Maine not held Little Round Top, there wouldn't have even been a Pickett's Charge. The Confederates would have held the high ground and the Union would have either been fruitlessly attacking their lines (deja vu Fredricksburg) or on the retreat back to Washington.

Or the Civil War or WW1 or WW2.

We basically invented radio, TV, computers, the internet, Viagra, Teflon, SPAM, Pacemakers, scotch tape, post it notes, magnetic poetry, the Cyclotron, the mass spectrometer and prevented the world from going hungry!!! Or at least helped invent those things.

And that's just a partial list.

Teflon was NJ..

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

I hope there are some goals tonight.

Watching the Sioux goofs middle cluster dance was boring.... Last 2 minutes notwithstanding.

Keep Mookie Entertained!!!

Malcolm Renfrew, a UMner, got the patent for the 1st method of synthesis of polytetraflouroethylene in a form that was suitable for commercial production.

So maybe an exaggeration to claim we invented it, but it wouldn't be on our pots and pans if not for UMner Malcolm Renfrew. Because you do realize that no other human being on the planet, in all of existence, would have ever figured out how to do it, if good ole Malcolm hadn't, right?! lol

Interesting little bit of trivia the guy died on his 103rd Birthday.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

A UMner coined the term "surfing the internet" and in light of this, I don't think Union has a chance of beating the Gophers in ice hockey.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Let's hope ESPN Announcers can pronounce Ikkala properly this year.!

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Go Gophers!

Thank Parise they aren't in the title game every year, or I'd be 20 years older than I am. Knots in my gut all day long. So relaxing watching the title game when your team isn't in it and you just enjoy the great hockey without the nerves.

Maybe I need to down a couple more beers before puck drop.... :D

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Good luck to both schools. Don't care who wins, just want a good game.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

What's with the crowd mic? It sounds like the crowds from the old Backyard Sports games, except those were meant to recreate like 50 fans, not 20k.

Re: National Championship: Union vs. Minnesota (Choaches stay out of it!)

Union suffering from delusion they can just play a wide open, up and down game with MN. Bad strategy. Going to get killed by MN's speed. Should have taken a page from UND, MSU, WIS page.
