Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Just finished writing the blog post for this week, emphasizing the senior's last home series and the challenge they have in front of them.

Other big news though, Justin Woods is coming home. He had his final treatment last week, and has his final appointment to hopefully hear that he is cancer free. I wasn't clear on if that was today, or tomorrow. But I'm told he may be at the games this weekend.

Also, admission is buy one ticket, get 50% off the 2nd ticket all weekend. Cool little promo. Then the concessions will have some sales too to get rid of inventory.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

The Nooks outskated the Mavs tonight in a 1-1 tie. You couldn’t have asked for a better all around effort from the boys. Both teams had chances to win late in the game, but both goaltenders played exceptionally well. But IMHO, the Nooks, who out shot MSU 30-18 played the better game tonight. Here are a few shots from the first two periods.

You probably don’t want to try and make a living by keeping the Mavs off the scoreboard on the PP. They have proven that is not an easy task. So the Nooks need to play smarter tonight.

But the Nooks penalty kill (and overall forecheck pressure) was probably the most impressive part of their game last night and probably the best I have ever seen a Nook team sustain. The Mavs are a high powered offensive team. During the first 8 minutes of the first period, which included 4 minutes of PP time, the Mavs had a total of zero shots on goal. Zero…over eight minutes. They scored as the second PP expired on their first official shot on goal.

Officially the Mavs were 0-6 and the Nooks were 1-5 (I believe this should be 6) on the PP. But the Nooks had a couple of majors and the Mavs had over a minute of 5x3 action. Not sure where you can easily see how many minutes a team skated a man down vs two men down vs 4x4 without breaking out the calculator and working through the box score. Is that game stat published somewhere?

The Mavs ended up with 6 PP opportunities, only three PP shots on goal, zero PP goals, and a total of 13:23 minutes of PP time (some of that 5x3).

The Nooks ended up with 6 PP opportunities, 6 PP shots, 1 goal, and a total of 7:50 on the PP.

Great job Nooks. But let’s not give the Mavs 13+ minutes of PP time tonight. The law of averages and all that stuff…

Go Nooks!

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Well...what could have happened, did. Time to go enjoy this one.

Couldn't be happier for our guys, our seniors, and our fans after the season we've had. What a way to go out.

Congrats. Was this your last home game of the season?

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Goooooo Nanooks!! Great weekend overall. Nice to see the hard work pay off. Two great games, especially defensively. Thank you seniors for all the memories you have added to nanook hockey history. Now let's finish it off with four more wins.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

The Nooks played their last home game of the season tonight (Saturday, February 14, 2015) and beat the number #1 college team in the nation 3-1. The Nooks out-skated and out-hustled the Mavericks all weekend, in large part due to senior leadership. I do not believe I have seen a better played series from the Nooks than what I was privileged to witness this weekend. Thank you seniors for all your work on the ice, in the weightroom, in the classroom, and in the community. Although you’re not done yet, you have a lot to be proud of. Thank you seniors…

Go Nooks!

Congrats, Nanooks. It's now two straight years where you changed the tenor of the McNaughton race with a late-season series against the #1 team in the league.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

I'm still in awe of what happened. Nanooks held the 3rd ranked scoring offense at 3.79 goals per game, to 2 goals in 2 games. Outstanding defensive effort all weekend, and Sean Cahill played with some serious heart.

Meanwhile our sisters to the south lose by a touchdown and a field goal and straight up got wrecked by the Huskies this weekend.

I hope those words from Dallas last night - (paraphrasing) "Even though we're done at home, this season isn't over yet. I really want to win the Governor's Cup." - mean something. That first series blew horse turds, largely due to the officiating. I've never seen our fans throw trash on the ice, and that's what happened... If last night for both teams was any indication, the 'Nooks can get it done.

You can save your firepower for the Governor's Cup and just pretend the games in Huntsville are practice. ;)

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

We can’t really blame officiating for the first two games of the Governor’s Cup, no matter how awful it was. When we rack up 48 shots (83 on the weekend) and four posts on a Saturday night and still can’t get it done, it’s just bad juju. We should have been close to putting up a ten spot on the Seaweed two. But that’s what’s both frustrating and yet endearing about the game.

If the Nooks continue to play like they did this weekend, we may still have a shot at putting up a 10 spot on the Seaweed.

I suppose I agree on the officiating part. It did blow, but it didn't have an impact on the game other than 2 power play goals for ACC in the 1st game. And it evened out in the 2nd game, but like you said when you have all the chances in the world and can't hit the net you're gonna have a bad time.
