MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

KFAN (Minneapolis) and Kevin Gorg/Paul Allen just gave major props to MTU, their band, and their fans. Pretty sure you can podcast it later.

I'll save everyone the trouble.

Allen: Find a team for me where it's really significant for them to do well in the early stages to open some eyes.
Gorg: Michigan Tech's the team to watch. I mean, this is a team that has to be hungry.
Allen: Just swept CC, right?
Gorg: Yeah, they just swept CC. This is a team that, unless they win this weekend, has no chance of making the NCAA tournament. This is a team that in the last couple of years has been a bottom-dweller in the WCHA and they have opportunity knocking on their door. And they're playing a Denver team that in my opinion is ripe for the plucking. Denver is a great hockey team but they're not playing great hockey right now. They were tooth-and-nail to get through any game against Wisconsin, the #10 seed, last week. Michigan Tech can slow them down, that's the one thing Michigan Tech can do is slow the hockey game down and maybe take some of that offensive firepower away from Denver – not let that game get up and down the ice. They've got good goaltending and they've got a coach that I think knows exactly what he's doing. This guy spent decades on the bench with Red Berenson at Michigan. This guy knows how to win this time of year, so Michigan Tech/Denver to me, on paper it's a mismatch, but don't read the paper. It's going to be a good hockey game as defense will meet offense, and if they can get hot, they're a team that could work their way with three wins right into the NCAA.
Allen: Think about it, if Michigan Tech advances and makes the NCAA tournament, they all will convene in parking lots in Houghton, at the Pump & Munch and places like that, and listen to the game on the radio, and it would be so big for that town.
Gorg: They travel well, too. They get all these fans – hundreds – that come in with these black and gold overalls, and they have this little band that plays in the concourse of the Xcel Energy Center and they get everything cooking. Even when [their team is] not there, they come. These guys come every single year to this tournament, and now with their team in and with a chance, I think Thursday could be very interesting.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

There was an incident in a big midget major tournament this week in Detroit that needs mentioning. The hot water system had apparently been off for a few weeks and for the tournament, which decided what team was going to represent michigan at the national midget major U -18, it was turned back on. One of the teams used the water bottle refill station at the rink, and one didn't. those that did got really sick and it affected their play. they ended up losing 5-4, and are appealing for a rematch.

Should they get a rematch, or should we send the winners, or should we petition to send both teams. These are some of the top recruits around so I thought it might be of interest.

Exciting times at the rink. My cousin's kid was playing, but not among the 28 kids that got sick. It sounded like some horrible intentional poisoning at the time.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

heard about that yesterday from a co-worker who had a kid in it, not on the team that got sick. I was told the game was halted in OT and would be resumed later, and the rink was shut down. So how did they determine a winner with one team in the hospital? Also as of yesterday they still weren't sure how or what caused it. Water bottles wouldn't surprise me since it was only kids on one team got sick. But I'm doubtful of the hot water heater story. More likely poor hygiene and/or lack of sanitization of the water bottles.

So that is why those players became sick... Odd

the father of one of the refs called into the radio show on wxyt this morning. I have a hard time understanding how the hot water fits in to tell the truth. The question is though, what to do next.

The winning team wins. You can't go back and play it. **** happens, it sucks but that's the way it goes.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Nice and short interview with Bill Muckalt by the Wild radio guy today - http://downloads.wild.nhl.com/podcasts/2755_MUCKALT.MP3

They mention a couple guys in tonights Wild/Dallas game that were recruited to Michigan by Mel

It also looks like some/all of the teams is going to the Wild game tonight, maybe the 2nd lesson in a week of how to not play hockey by the Wild!

Not the water bottles or the water based on tests run. The hot water was turned off prior to the tournament so that was the thinking of why it could have been water. It was more then the players getting sick as the count is up to 80 plus. I personally know some spectators that had gotten ill as I was there.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

The team got some TV time tonight during the Wild game, they showed them sitting in the stands and the color guy, Greenlay, talked about how it was good to see Bill Muckalt again and that they'd be playing on Thursday. The guys looked kind of bored, but it was a 0-0 hockey and at the end of the 2nd period.

As nice as the attention is, apparently the perception that we don't have any talent and play a strict trap game hasn't been debunked yet. To be fair, its been one season, so I guess it's forgivable.

And it is Gorg. Lord knows he tries, but I've said on GPL that he needs to stick to doing his bit at Canterbury Downs.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Well let's not try to help the other side any more than necessary. They do read. And he's right in a way, Tech has a losing record overall. It's all good though, they can think whatever they want..
As far as the rink sickness, Hmmmm.. I guess time will tell. Personally I'd try to get both teams invited.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

For the sake of us Tech fans who get Fox Sports Detroit but not any of the other Fox Sports channels that are airing the game tomorrow, please join me in emailing FSD (fsdviewerinfo@foxsports.net) to ask them to pick up the game. Kind of doubt it will work, but it never hurts to ask.

FS Detroit and FS North both have Plus channels for extra programming. FSN+ is airing all three CCHA games on Friday and Saturday, you'd think FSD+ could reciprocate that and air the WCHA games.
