MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Did the team get back yet?

I don't know, but The Mel Pearson show will be tomorrow now at 8:30 ET because the team is traveling is what the Mix 93 DJ said. So I assume they're flying Denver to MSP maybe today and will find a hotel in the twin cities for a few days.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

In other news, I just got NMU into the tournament, even with a conference tournament upset so an extra >15PWR team is also in.

Nope. Now that classes have resumed, that is a violation of the NCAA's travel policy.

They probably flew back to GB or TC Sunday, then bussed the rest of the way over night. They'll most likely leave for the cities Wednesday afternoon or evening.

They couldn't have flown back Sunday, because they would have had to keep Sunday open as a potential game day for the series when they made the reservations. Today is the earliest they could fly back. I'm sure the AD is aware of what the NCAA restrictions are.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they have to attend at least some classes this week. They only got to hang out in Colorado Springs because Tech was on break.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

The rule:

16.7.2 Departure/Return Restrictions. It is not permissible for a team to depart more than 48 hours prior to or
to remain more than 36 hours after an event or to transport the team to another area for entertainment
purposes.
In a situation where the 48/36 hour limitation is applicable, an institution that is participating in a multicompetition
or multi-day event (e.g., conference tournament) may depart 48 hours prior to the event’s first
round of competition (as opposed to 48 hours prior to the institution’s first scheduled competition), and
may remain 36 hours after the conclusion of the last contest (even if they are not participating in the final
contest). 6/94 Official Interpretation.
16.7.2.1 Exceptions. The time limitations related to the provisions of travel expenses do not apply in the following
circumstances:
(a) Travel prior to and following contests in Hawaii or Alaska;
(b) Travel prior to and following contest in the 48 contiguous states for member institutions located in
Hawaii or Alaska;
(c) Travel prior to and following regular season competition that takes place during the institution’s
official vacation period during the academic year;
(d) Travel prior to contests in NCAA championship events, NGB championship events in emerging sports
or certified postseason football games; or

If you consider the potential third game on Sunday night as part of the series since travel plans would have had to accommodate that, the 36 hours after the event would extend to about noon on Tuesday, and if you take the 48 hours before hand rule and apply it to the 2pm game on Thrusday, there's only about a 2 hour window in between. Further, there's the noted exception of travel to contests in NCAA championship events. The WCHA final five might count as one of those? (I'm not being sarcastic, I actually don't know) Etiher way, I don't see a violation for staying in St Paul.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

No. The WCHA Final Five is not an NCAA Tournament.

Yes, it's a rules violation for staying in St. Paul.

NMU was booked on a flight home from Alaska late Sunday night in 2004. They swept, but had to wait for the flight to leave. They arrived home from Green Bay Monday mid-morning, and then turned around and took off Tuesday afternoon to leave for JLA for the early game on Thursday.

MTU is in the same situation.

The first round of the conference tournament was last weekend, they can depart 48 hours before that, the last game of the conference tournament is this Saturday, they have 36 hours to leave after that game. Nothing says they have to go home between rounds.

I guess I wasn't thinking of this past weekend as part of the tournament... Your answer is much more straight-forward.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

It seems to have sparked a debate.

First, it's been understood that rule 16.7.2 means NCAA Tournaments, of which the WCHA Tournament is not an NCAA Tournament. Meaning that each weekend's series involves travel (unless the school is in break (like what MTU did to stay in CC))

Saturday night at 11pm MT, or the theoretical Sunday night? If it's after Saturday's game, then MTU MUST leave Colorado by 11am Mountain Time, Noon CT, 1pm ET.

They cannot start their trip to St. Paul until 48 hours prior to the first game, 1pm MT (2pm CT, 3pm ET)

My confusion is:
1) When does the 36 hr clock start?
2) Since they have "started" for home, can they "stop" their travel at MSP since they're now in the 48 hour window. And isn't that breaking the "cannot leave FOR an event more than 48 hours ahead of time?"

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Anyone know if there was a sporting event on Saturday night, so that the ticket office was open?

16.7.2 specifically states "an institution that is participating in a multicompetition
or multi-day event (e.g., conference tournament) may depart 48 hours prior to the event’s first
round of competition (as opposed to 48 hours prior to the institution’s first scheduled competition), and

How is this understood to be the NCAAs?

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Sorry, I goofed on that one.

But, looking into that more: "may depart 48 hours prior to the event’s first
round of competition (as opposed to 48 hours prior to the institution’s first scheduled competition), and
may remain 36 hours after the conclusion of the last contest (even if they are not participating in the final
contest)."

So, BGSU could have stayed in MQT and then travelled to FSU, and could stay in Big Rapids and now head to Detroit?

There's a lot of loose interpretations of the rules that need some clarifying.

I believe so, I don't disagree that it leaves a lot up in the air, but if Tech is staying in the Twin Cities this week as shirtless says... Well... I think that answers it for us :)

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

What did UAA do last year? I believe that their spring break falls before the first round, so they were in a similar situation. After beating the Gophers, I'd be very surprised if they flew back to Alaska for 2 days before flying back for the Final 5.

Well, Alaska gets a specific exemption to the policy.

That being said, I would assume that Michigan Tech knows what they are doing, and I wouldn't be surprised if they cleared this with the NCAA at some point prior to scheduling their trip like this.
